Barely noticing the prick into his side, Baas still wishes to make an example out of the one guard that managed to hit him. He thrusts his maul into the guard who just hit him, but unfortunately loses his balance as he does so swinging wide (and looking slightly foolish in the process).

Attack & Damage: (1d20+11=12, 2d6+8=16)

Critical... failure. One rage point spent.

Roll again to avoid really bad things happening.

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

"Come on, let's go!" Ixius says when he hears Baas yelling. Ixius then casts mage armor on himself and runs to the guardhouse.

As soon as he sees the guards fighting Baas, he sends a scorching ray at one of them.

ranged touch attack: 1d20+5=23
fire damage: 4d6=9

Spoiler:
seeing the guards coming down the hall aborts the spell casting (hopefully he has at least managed to get his bow strung. He waits for them to get closer, so that all three are in the hall. Once they are all there and close to him he uses 25' of his daily teleportation movement to transport himself on the other side of the guards. He then tries to hide as best he can and quickly creep into the room.

Stealth: 1d20+10=22

Okay, unfortunately for my sadistic appetites, Baas has managed to avoid 'really bad things.' Fippin has teleported past the guards who were warily approaching him with swords drawn. Ixius has entered the fray.

Baas swings so hard, he almost pulls himself backwards and into the open pit in the floor. Almost, but not quite. The guards take advantage of Baas moment of weakness to stab Baas in both his left and right sides. A measley 7 points of damage.

Fippin teleports past the guards and finds himself in a room with several empty cells. The tunnel continues on the other side of the room. From the size and smell of these cells, Fippin guesses anywhere between ten and forty people have been recently imprisoned here.

Fippin: A stealth check will be necessary to move silently. The muddy wooden planks are somewhat muffled, but you could still attract the attention of the guards you just 'ported past.

ROUND 4?
Baas -- acted
Upstairs Guards -- acted
Fippin

Ixius comes bursting in the door and begins to burn guards and bedding as well. Three of the guards--all those not facing off against Baas--begin to burn, screaming and dropping onto straw mats and light, sweat-drenched sheets in an attempt to put the fire out. This only makes it worse.

ROUND 5

Ixius
Baas
Upstairs Guards
Fippin
Downstairs guards

Baas begins to wince from the pain, but seeing Ixius' flames burn at some of his enemies, he decides to press the advantage with another swing.

Attack & Damage (1d20+11=15, 2d6+8=17)

Uses one rage point.

Male Halfling Ranger 1/Cleric 4

Spoiler:

That was why I had rolled a stealth check with my last post. Do I still need to make another one?

Fippin will creep further down the tunnel past the cells. Keeping his eyes peeled for danger and his bow ready with an arrow knocked.

Fippin:

Spoiler:

Did you edit that in after? I swear it wasn't there when I first looked! No, you don't need to roll another.

The guards can't hear you over the sound of their own surprised shouting but then they become concerned about something else and don't even bother looking for you. You hear them say something about "getting out of here."

Continuing on down the tunnel, you see that dim, slow-burning torches line the walls, just enough to keep humans from tripping but not enough to really light the place.

Short tunnels branch off in various directions, each coming to a dead-end. These all show signs of being dug. At this depth, the mix of pebbles, mud, and sand have hardened into a sedimentary deposit.

You hear the noise of metal striking stone ahead. You hear the sounds of human voices yelling orders, calling someone "a worthless sack of ape s$%+."

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

Whoa, Ixius cast shorching ray not burning hands, which I considered, but rejected because I didn't want to catch everything on fire. Sccorching ray only affects a single target.

Ixius and Baas:

Spoiler:

Baas takes down one of the four guards attacking him with a mighty blow. Three more remain facing him but they are distracted by Ixius's entering the room and the screaming of the one guard he burnt with his scorching ray. Two of the other guards--those not attackhing Baas and not burning because Ixius cast scorching ray not burning hands--attack Ixius. Both hit with their short swords.5 points of damage.

Ooops. My reading comprehension fails are coming one after the other today. ... Okay, so one guard is down, not three.

Male Halfling Ranger 1/Cleric 4

Tarren

Spoiler:
Seeing that things seem pretty safe for him at the moment he proceeds to cast expeditious retreat and then true strike. After that he continues down the tunnel again using stealth. He tries to get closer to the voice to see what is going on (I guess that's about 3 rounds worth of actions for Fippin, so I'll understand if you want to wait a bit with him, while the others go through a couple rounds of combat).

Stealth: 1d20+10=17

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

And the guardhouse is not on fire ;)

Ixius wrote:

Yes. No fire. Bad pyromaniacal DM. (It would have been more fun though.)

Male Half-Orc Fighter 1/Rogue 1

Pressing the advantage, Baas attempts to attack the guards who are pestering Ixius (though if they are too far away and doing so would provoke an AoO, he stays with the guard he's currently engaged with).

Attack & Damage: (1d20+11=21, 2d6+8=13)

One more Rage point gone.

I'm going to hold off on any more rounds until others can get in here. Keliwyn and Sykala may have gotten up to something. Save this attack for later.

Fair enough. I figured I should do it now while I have the time. Final week of practicum coming up!

Errr....I posted Sykala's awesome perception check a loooong time ago and never got an answer so just assumed she is not yet involved. Though how Ixius could be and not her........just so you know I have not read any of the spoilers so only have a vague idea about what is going on from the unspoilered stuff. Oh, and wasn't getting too worked up because she has been doing a heck of a lot on the side so didn't want to step on Baas' and Fip's moment to shine ;)

Either I missed it, or it was one of the board's disappearing posts. Both of those have been happening a lot this week.

Sykala hears the scream the same time Ixius does. Ixius calls to her before running off to the guardhouse.

As I said not getting worked up about it, just enjoying the ride. Continue to really enjoy the pace you set.

Sykala runs after Ixius calling to Keliwyn as she does. She follows him into the guard house.......Ok, so what the heck is going on? :)

Oh yeah, Ixius has been dying to burn something this whole adventure. He almost did it here, but he was afraid Baas might get trapped in the burning guardhouse.

Sykala finds chaos and pandemonium. Three guards surround Baas near the center of the room until he brings his earthbreaker down and reduces that number by one. Ixius is close to the door and is facing off against two more guards. One recently scorched guard is nursing his wounds and biding his time.

Sykala's look goes from one of curiousity to anger in a flash, "You leave friend alone!" Lightning crackles and arcs toward the recently scorched man facing Ixius.

Lightning touch attack: 1d20+5=11, 1d6+2=8

ROUND 6
Ixius
Baas -- ACTED
Sykala -- ACTED
Upstairs Guards
Fippin --CASTING SPELLS
Downstairs guards

Sykala enters the room and blasts the wounded guard with lightning finishing him off. Baas lowers the boom on one of the three men facing him, taking him down. The guards downstairs are rushing up the ladder to support their colleagues. Round 8 will see three fresh guards joining this fight.

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

Ixius chants more in draconic and claws at one of the guards, his claws sparkling with blue.

Spellcraft check to cast shocking grasp defensively: 1d20+11=26
Touch attack: 1d20+4=6

As Ixius's lightning crackles past the guards, they respond with some very well-aimed short swords. One slices Ixius's arm up pretty badly. The other cuts his side. 10 points of damage.

The two guards still standing near Baas, stab at him from both sides. They have continue to rotate as he pulverizes their colleagues so that they continue to flank him.

14 points of damage.

How come I never crit when I roll for my own characters?

Behind Baas, the first fresh guard has climbed the ladder and is helping the next one up.

ROUND 7
Ixius
Baas
Sykala
Upstairs Guards
Fippin --CASTING SPELLS
Downstairs guards

Male Half-Orc Fighter 1/Rogue 1

Baas winds up for another strike, hoping to eventually demoralize his opponents with his combat prowess. Though he tries not to show it, the pain of their attacks is beginning to get to him.

Attack & Damage: (1d20+11=20, 2d6+8=18)

One rage point spent. You keep setting them up, and I'll keep knocking them down! :)

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

Ixius tries to shock the guard in front of him again:

Spellcraft check for casting shocking grasp defensively: 1d20+11=29
Touch attack: 1d20+4=18
Electricity damage: 4d6=18

Keliwyn, where are you?

Sykala sends more lightning after the lone guard on Ixius and then moves up to flank him, "You stay behind, Ixius! Baas! Why we fight? What happen Fip?" She has 40' movement. Her AC is currently 23.

Touch lightning and damage: 1d20+5=10, 1d6+2=3

Ixius, Baas, and Sykala take out two of the four guards who were originally sleeping. Those climbing the ladder see how easily their colleagues are getting knocked down and decide to make a run for it. Unfortunately, there's only one door and they'll have to run past all three of you to get to it.

The guard fighting Baas and the guard fighting Ixius both miss. They're more frightened than anything else.

Baas, Ixius, and Sykala are entitled to one attack of opportunity this round if they have a weapon drawn.

Male Half-Orc Fighter 1/Rogue 1
Sykala wrote:
Sykala sends more lightning after the lone guard on Ixius and then moves up to flank him, "You stay behind, Ixius! Baas! Why we fight? What happen Fip?"

"He's down below! They decided to draw steel against me while I was waiting!" He pauses to look at the pile of corpses near his feet.

"They have found little success."

At this point, the escaping guard with his lowered defenses runs by, giving Baas the opportunity to strike him down.

1d20+11=13, 2d6+8=13

Sykala has no weapon out at the moment and lets the guard pass unharmed and blurts out to Baas, "Petrune make dead elves walk! Need go building." Then she pauses and glances toward where the guard just ran as if pondering something, "We have fight all men here now?"

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

Ixius also lets the guards run past.

Sykala wrote:
"We have fight all men here now?"

"I hope not, I had no quarrel with them, but they were attacking Baas. Now where did Fippin and Keliwyn go?"

Fippin:

Spoiler:

Fippin creeps down the tunnel, casting spells and preparing himself for whatever may lurk ahead.

As he moves forward, the noise of voices and tools grows louder. A more brightly-lit tunnel branch lies just ahead. He reaches the branch of the tunnel where the sound and light come from and sees 6 emaciated Ekujae in chains. They hold picks and hammer away at the mud and stone walls of the tunnel. They are guarded by three of the consortium guards. Fippin recognizes these guards from the fire last night.

One of the Ekujae's eyes go wide as he sees Fippin. The guards have yet to notice.

Male Halfling Ranger 1/Cleric 4

Tarren

Spoiler:

Fippin's seen enough. He starts creeping back, and once he's back far enough that he's sure the guards won't notice him, he breaks into a run and hurries back to the exit to check on his friends. He's a little worried about Baas.

Three of the guards, those that came from downstairs, flee from the building. They do so noisily. In a few minutes, the whole camp will have heard them. You know that there are about eight more guards outside, two in this building fighting you, and Fippin has discovered some down below (as he will probably soon tell you).

ROUND 8
Ixius
Baas
Sykala
Upstairs Guards
Fippin
Downstairs guards

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

Ixius tries to shock the next guard:

Spellcraft check: 1d20+11=22
Touch attack: 1d20+4=6

"We need to get downstairs before the rest come! Then I will burn this place down."

ooc]Don't forget Ixius's AC is 18 with the mage armor.[/ooc]

Sykala nods her understanding to Ixius, "I protected fire. You go. I watch here." She zaps the same one Ixius does.

Lightning touch attack: 1d20+5=19, 1d6+2=3

Male Half-Orc Fighter 1/Rogue 1

It's clobberin' time! ... Wait, that line has already been used? Damn...

Baas swings again, starting to tire from the continued effort he's been applying.

Attack & Damage: 1d20+11=24, 2d6+8=15

With those two attacks, all the guards in the barracks (or at least those at surface level) have fallen or fled. The noise outside indicates you will not be alone for long.

Your intentions?

Hey guys, I'm going to be offline probably for a couple of days. I've got an interview in another city. Be back Tuesday night. Chat amongst yourselves.

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

"Hurry, go down. I will go last." Ixius tells Baas and Sykala.

Male Halfling Ranger 1/Cleric 4

By this time Fippin pokes his head up out of the trap door.

He looks over the carnage and says

"There is some kind of mine or tunnel system down here. They're using Ekujae slaves to dig it out."

Ixius wrote:
"Hurry, go down. I will go last." Ixius tells Baas and Sykala.

Sykala looks at him as if he is being difficult and shakes her head, "You hurt. Fip help. You set fire. Gozreh protect me fire. I last."

Male Halfling Ranger 1/Cleric 4

I'm not sure going down there is the best idea. There might not be another way out. They could trap us down there

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

"But they will slaughter us outside. There are too many."

Male Halfling Ranger 1/Cleric 4

What if we could get to the jungle or our canoes? If we could get the Ekujae on our side then we could deal with these bastards.

Still if we do go down, the tunnel is narrow. It would be hard for them to come at us more than a couple at a time, but it would also be hard for us to fight our way out.

Any decision?

Male Human (Taldan/Osirioni) Rogue 3/Sorcerer 4

I'll give Baas a chance to speak up, then Ixius will force the issue.
