Rise of the Runelords: Burnt Offerings*
Character Submissions begin WED July 2nd Noon EST or later.
I'm looking for players to start the Rise of the Runelords. To give people a shot that always seem to miss out on these I have the following caveats to accepting new characters:
- 1.> No submissions accepted until 48 hours from now (Noon Wednesday EST, roughly 46.5 hours from now.)
- 2.> No 'evil' characters, any other alignment is fine.
- 3.> Characters need to be fleshed out, I like a good back story, I like having elements from your past I could draw from to help enhance the story, characters that help the DM by assigning a harassing villain, or flaws earn a better chance to get in.
- 4.> There is a surprise in store for the heroes, I can't tell you or it would ruin the surprise. A hint that wont help you is I always wanted to do this but could never find a way to pull it off until now. It's bound to be neat.
- 5.> I will select 5-6 of the more interesting PCs posted after Noon EST on Wed.
- 6.> While I would 'like' people that have not played Burnt Offerings before, I have no problem with those that want to play and are familiar with the story. I plan to modify certain events here and there to change it up anyway.
- Technical Details:
- 1.> The game will be run 3.5 style.
- 2.> All characters will be checked for cheating, check all skills/feats etc. (Offenses found result in DM torment /evil laugh.)
- 3.> Flaws and traits 'can' be used, but know they 'will' be used against you.
- 4.> Rolls will be done via Invisible Castle, I will check periodically for fudged rolls, but would like the honor system to be used. (I think you can set a group up so all rolls show up on 1 page, I'll look into that.)
- 5.> I have nearly every book from 3-3.5 so feel free to use any character generation method created, including the Green Ronin 'Advanced players handbook' if you wish. Anything homebrew is not allowed, it needs to be in print, and something I can get access too.
- 6.> I will allow up to ECL 1, however you need to start as a level 0 character with negative XP, the trade off if you live is eventually getting to level 1 with no ECL penalty, but albeit always behind the main party in XP.
- Expected Posting Frequency:
- 1.> I have internet access wired into my brain, so I am available to post 6 days a week, and expect to post often. If your in Alaska and only plan to post once a week, this will not be the thread for you sadly, as I hope to get a lot of posting in during the week. If I were to predict a number, no less than 4-5 posts from the DM a day, not counting any DM follow up posts from the players.
Loose rules when posting:
I'm not a teacher, but please spell check. I want no leet speak, and absolutly nothing as follows:
DM: "You enter the rain slick tunnel after descending forty miles below Taris' surface. There is no light to guide you but you feel a draft blowing up from below that carries the sickly sweet smell of coolant fluid."
PC: "OK. R U Coming down with me R5-F2? I could use UR Flesh Light down here."
Bad Form, Please spell check and type out whole words. :)
Oh and don't forget the surprise, it'll be a few levels before you see it, but I think it'll be fun once it comes to play it out.
Once Characters are approved I expect a start date before 7-9-08.

I'm interested, but have a few questions.
Mostly, you say any book is open, but to confirm, Bo9S, MoI, ToM are all ok? I'll assume the more obvious PHB2 and Complete series are good to go.
Are you expecting to run through just Burnt Offerings, or the entirety of Rise of the Runelords? In either case, do you have any idea on campaign length?
Thanks for any answers you can provide, hopefully I can offer a character in return come Wednesday. :)

I plan to run the entire path, with off adventures through classic D&D modules, and a few home brew scenarios. To make a magical pie chart I'd guess 75% Pathfinder, 15% Classic, 10% Homebrew.
I have no issue with those books mentioned above, it may take longer for me to approve a MoI generated characters only because I have never used it in game. Though I do own it, so if you think you can make an interesting MoI based character have at it.

Ah, good to hear then! I doubt I'll really use MoI, but I was just checking. Mind if we post our characters ASAP, or would you rather we just wait 'till Wednesday?
Cheers! :)

Shameless bump to promote the fact I will be accepting Applications for my RotRL: Burnt Offerings* game tomorrow at Noon EST.
(Roughly 20 hours from this post.)
If for some reason you cannot make this obligation with good reason email a copy of your character app to zoe at metrocast dot net and I will put you in line. (One legit excuse is your busting your ass in the military fighting for me, your a shoe in if thats the case.)
I'll be taking 4 or 5 PCs (the book recommends 4, but 5 always seemed better to me for a party make up.)

Zoe |

EDIT: AH, yes your referring to my line where i will select the 5 more interesting characters, that is true. If the first 5 pass muster though they get in. So your right, technically I will pick 5 that I find work well and are interesting, however if it comes down to picking between 2 I will choose the early bird.
I deleted my earlier post as it was misleading, I did NOT intend for the first 5 to get a free pass, thank you for pointing that out. Your assumption was correct however, it's not a race to post first that gets in.
Zoe.

Zoe |

Damn why do I see that just now.
No time to make a Character for I have no books at hand.
I would have liked to play a class from MoI in a while for I didn't get permission in other plays.
Oh well.
Good luck with your players!
Fraz I don't need any statted up characters, just a post after Noon saying I want to play X and this is his/her story. Thats a valid application as far as I'm concerned.
Stats can come after your concept is approved. You still have 2.5 hours to come up with something :) You can make it fine.

Stergan Rus |

Without further introduction:
Stergan Rus
Skarn Incarnate LN
Background:
Stergan is on a trip most young skarn go on, once they get the proper age: to proof himself to his family and show strength to their enemies.
His parents taught him to obey the rules of law and order, even if that meant to accuse one of his closest friends, Adra Wylle, of stealing and lying, bringing her to the towns judges, which exiled Adra from the Skarn homelands.
He came all the way to Varisia to find that proof in form of trophys, be them scars, bones of monsters,
great wealth, or even an exclusive contract with a trading house.
What he did not tell his parents was, that he was searching for Adra, who always had spoken of her dreams to travel to Riddleport.
Stergan knew that his parents knew of Adra's plans, which lead him to take a ship to Magnimar instead.
(I placed the skarn homelands far off the shore of Varisia, hope this is okay for you.)
His ship landing in Magnimar, he was forced to go out to Sandpoint for he had not met much success in his task.
He wanted to get to Riddleport as fast as possible, but without the money to buy him a place on a ship sailing up the coast and not wanting to be part of a crew he had to take a horse.
Traveling the road from Magnimar to Sandpoint alone he was a nice attraction to thieves, but with some luck he was able to oppose them to get away with his life, though not without losing is horse and killing the one that seemed to be the master.
That act obviously scared the others enough to drive them back in the woods, but not without one of them threatening Stergan that they would hunt him down and find him.
With the Skarn, being a seldomly seen race in this part of the lands, and their spines being an unmissable feature he has no doubt that it would be rather easy to find him again.
Two days later Stergan reached Sandpoint pleased, for it was a larger city, where it should be not so easy for the thieves hunting him to kill him openly. Plus, maybe he would find someone who would help him to get the thieves judged and imprisoned or whatever the sentence is according to the local law.

As I posted above, it'll take awhile before I approve any MoI content as I know very little of it in game.
While not an outright denail at this time, a 6' 210lb. Humanoid with 1' spines on his/her back arms doesn't quite strike me as 'Hero' material. It's very possible 5 more submissions will come in and bump you off the accepted list.
If you want to rework this or a new character that is perfectly fine, or you can try you luck with this guy, I don't want to be dishonest however.

I don't remember where the quote belongs to, but just to rephrase it:
"It's not the weapon, that kills people, it's the wielder."On the other hand: I do see what you mean. But I thought of it as a kind of flaw to be so outstanding and strange to the eyes of the "normals".
Anyway, I'm gonna try my luck here, with Stergan.
But if it is okay for you I'm gonna think about an alternate.

Velkan's background
Molgrim used what little wealth he had obtain from adventuring and purchased some outlining farmland shortly after getting married.
While both had desired to have a family they were both getting older, and since they didn’t have a child within the first few years of their marriage they resigned themselves to the fact that perhaps it was for the best. Fate would see it differently, and so it was with that the forces of nature threw them a curve ball.
Velkan was born to a pair of happy but aged parents, his mother was fifty years of age and his father was pushing sixty!
Velkan childhood was happy and uneventful until he reached the age of four when the first incident and display of inherent magical talent had occurred, shortly followed by other minor but unusual events.
Velkan's mother was a Sorceress adept but never explored the true extent of her talents. She had decided long ago to live a simply but fruitful life. It was during the early signs of Velkan gifts that she became very ill, requiring most of Mogrims attention. Molgrim made regular visits to Sandpoint for the medicine she needed.
Molgrim was a simply man. Strong in his youth, he was a courageous fighter that often times held a defensive position, which would allowed his companions the needed time to devise an attack of their own against the evil forces which they encounter. Molgrims name would never be one heard in the stuff of legend, though he and his companions had quite a fair number of adventures. Unfortunately, a couple such adventures had either ended in failure because its primary goal was never accomplished, such as finding the vampires coffin or their failure to deal with the wizard before he managed his escape.
Molgrim knew very little of the magical arts, and with his wife demanding much of his attention, the challenging job of raising a child practical on his own at his age was beyond his abilities.
Molgrim and Aylmora had come to terms that they needed to do what was best for Velkan. They had both lived there lives and wanted to provide the same opportunity for there child.
One of Molgrims adventuring companions, an Elf named Aneurin, would occasionally stop by from time to time (something like every 5-10 years, time having little meaning to an Elf) had returned to his home in the Elven forest when Molgrim had retired. It had been many years now when last Molgrim and Aneurin had seen each other. He suspected that Aneurin had taken up to adventuring once more. Molgrim had sent word to Aneurin that he needed his aid. Several months had passed before the faithful day when Aneurin appeared at Molgrims door.
Molgrim explained his plight and asked if he could take his son Velkan for a time, to help him learn the mysteries of his latent powers and perhaps a little swordplay in the process to make his father proud, the last bit was added with a grin.
The years passed and Velkan grew into manhood. He was nearing the completion of his train to becoming a Duskblade. Aneurin was leaving for a time and said he expected Velkan to have completed his training, which he himself would test upon his return.
During his years with the elves Velkan had exchanged letters with his parents roughly every six to nine months. Also, accompanied by Aneurin he had visited his parents twice, each visit was exactly five years apart, so as not to interfere we his training.
His parents seemed to be doing well, his mother had for the most part recovered, though she still required a regular supplement of medicine which Molgrim would go into town for.
Velkan had recently turned seventeen, the latest letter from his parents was now roughly one year overdue. His mentor, was now two month late from his usual punctual nature, had also failed to return to give his approval of his completed training which was now one month past.
Velkan departure had long been arranged in preparation when his training was complete. All the gear that he would need, including a small money pouch had been set aside for him when he ready to return home. So that his aging parent could see the man that their son had become and know that he would be able to survive on his own.
Velkan of course wondered what had delayed his mentor, but first things was first, he needed to see his parents. Before leaving Velkan left a letter behind for his mentor explaining his intentions and that he could request his return to formally test his abilities or seek him out on his families homestead, Velkan headed out to Sandpoint to see his parents, but fate it would seem, would once more intervene, but this time it would be Velkan’s life that would be effected.
Velkan arrived on his parents land only to find that it looked as if it had been neglected for quite some time. There was an unfamiliar oder in the air which he could not make out. The odor grew stronger and upset his stomach as he approached the door to his home. When he enter their home, it had hit him as if someone had stabbed a dagger through his heart. There they laid, both his parents had been brutally murder!
Velkan would later learn about the Late Unpleasantness and of the madman named Chopper whom was behind the mass murders. It was surmised that Chopper must have followed Molgrim home one day and murder them at his leisure.
The experience altered his perception and opened his mind to a darkness that dwells in us all. (looking to multiclass into a Dread Necromancer from Heroes of Horrors pg84)
Velkan has spent the last few years settling his families affairs, now in his early twenties, Velkan is ready to move on and plans to leave after the upcoming festival to see what he may learn of Aneurin fate. His latest letter and inquiry to a mutual friend of Aneurin came back with troublesome news. It would seem that his mentor, Aneurin, has yet to return and they are beginning to fear the worst for him.
Race: Human, Cheliaxian/ Varisian half breed.
Alignment: LN, N, or CN (good tendencies)
Class: Duskblade
Multiclass: Dread Necromancer, somewhere around 4th-6th spell level max
on a side note i am currently playing in a Rotrl game on the Reaper miniatures board, though we've only advanced into the next day game time.
We had two encounters and have just gone on a boar hunt. Just wanted to let you know, but rest assure they'll be no metagaming.

Lorderl |

Velkan (Duskblade)
I'm cannot allow Dread Necromancer. It's to focused around using evil, channeling negative energy etc. Techincally you can be non-evil, but looking over what the class offers it falls too far into 'evil' for a group of heroes.
Otherwise I'm fairly sure your background will work.
A good aligned cleric can cast inflict light wounds which also channels negative energy.
Along with the alignment choices I had listed I was thinking of a character that used its abilities for good. (hence the background with parents death)
I wasn’t looking to cast the command undead or summon undead and the alike, since they’re evil descriptor spells (though honestly I don’t know all of the spells descriptors but I know many are available to sorcerers and wizards). I would be rebuking undead (not commanding) just like any good aligned cleric. At most I’d take the class up to 12th level, likely about 8th depending on a PRC, the character has no interest in becoming evil or a lich for that matter.
give it a second look over please and let me know, as it is the character will not be able to use many of its spells and abilities if we encounter undead

I'm interesting in your PbP and I sent you my dwarf druid backstory.
Brokjak Nusgurn, dwarf druid
Brokjak Nusgurn is a dwarf that lives in the middle of the plains, at the east of the town of Sandpoint. His parents moved to Magnimar from the Fogscar Mountains by the perspective to give their service at smith in this town and to develop the urban knowledge of their son Brokjak. Before the family arrived to the town of Magnimar, Brokjak was developing a great ability to talk with the creatures of the plains and the sky of the plains.
His parents thought that the development of his communion with the nature should be well developed, but with a rear thought they think their son will be never the same than his kinfolk.
When he was in the town of Magnimar, his parents asked an elf druid, a little bit surprised and reticent, to learn him the way of the druid. After some years of formation, Brokjak was a druid that quit his teacher and began to build a mud and wood hut in the middle of the plains between the Fogscar Mountains and Sandpoint.
Recently, he was in the town of Sandpoint to take some news of the nearest area by some information that the folks say in the many place of the town.

np, a quick look at other classes if I still wish to multiclass Beguiler, Warmage ok? Curious, if I can make anything work from there, are PRC from HOH open to us?
Scratch the question about HOH PRC.
I’d like to multiclass into the Warmage, similar to Duskblade in many respects and he could have just as well been introduce to the Warmage class in his training.
Alignment: NG or CG
PRC: Holy Scourge, Holy Liberator or maybe even the Occult Slayer

I'd like to toss my hat in for this. I have a few character concepts, haven't had much chance to think about it. I am able to think up things on the fly so I could have something up with time to do it and short notice on your end.
If it matters, I'm military in Korea, 7 years in. Time is good some days, and bad others.
I may not be able to post some days, but shouldn't be more than a day gap. If that is not within your capacity or game design, let me know.
If there is another RotRL campaign of someone else, a referral would be appreciated. All for now, later.

I'm considering a LN star elf mountebank(dragon compendium), fighting the situation, have the basic backstory in my mind. Would that mesh with story you have planned?
I know I'll stand out in sandpoint and most anywhere else with the star elf, but it sounds fun and rome roleplaying applications would be created.
If not, I have many full casters ready if that needs to be filled.
cael quel re

Zoe |

I'm not familiar with Star Elves, nor do I have the book they are in it seems. Post up what they get as a race and we'll see.
Those are different from the Star Elves from "Unapproachable East" ?
Edit: Is mounteback a class? I also never heard of that class yet. Star Elf I assume is from the UE book mentioned above.

![]() |

I would like to give this a shot.
I've never done anything PbP before, however. I'll happily post daily or a few times a day if you want.
As for my character, I do not know all the supplementary ones (such as the Incarnate or the one from the dragon compendium the recently added player is creating). If you let me know what type of character you need to flesh out the group, I'll get right on it. I like writing stories, but I need to know about whom to write first!
Edit: I'd like to add: You seem to be fairly balanced with the roleplay and hack/slash. This is good, as I create my characters as I feel them, meaning sometimes CHA is not a dump attribute. However, it's a little annoying when I rarely get to speak to anyone then due to combat-heavy DMing - without stating that's what it was going to be in the beginning. Again, I don't feel you're like that, but if you are, just let me know so I can plan accordingly.
Also, does writing in accent bother you? Example: "I see that man has a oversized jug of milk" --> "I be seein' dat mon got a ovahsized jug o' melk!"

![]() |

They are the same as the star elves of Unapproachable East. Mountebank is a class from Dragon Compendium. Essentially, one has given their soul to an evil master, who upon the characters death, will take their soul. They are not compelled to do anything by said master. They know that, for the price of power gained, their immortal soul is forfeit, though there are ways to get it back.
If the character dies, they must make a bluff check, it succeeds and they can be raised or resurrected as normal. Mountebanks mimic many rogues abilities, just 6+int mod instead of 8+int mod.
Ones who fight their doom are neutral. The star elf story, Sildeyuir and the nilshai invading, would be the reason for the desperate grasp for power, to fight the invading hordes.
It is complicated, that's how I like things. I can go simple if need be, I'll just use another class and race.

Incarnate I never played with, but seem kinda 'mage like.'
Duskblade is more an upfront Fighter/spellcaster type.
Druid is a multi tasking class your probably familiar with, full spell progression, light armor, shifting into animal forms etc.
Mountback - Abysaal/Infernal sorcerer type? If it requires an evil alignment I will have to say no, if it's powers are evil in nature I will have to shoot it down as I did Dread necromancer. However as i only have bits and pieces of it I'm not 100% sure yet. If it's flavor is more of a person that got these powers through a bloodline that is far removed from say a demon and it's more a side effect that may be doable.
You can play whatever class you want, but if your looking for suggestion to mesh with the group a stealthy type may fit well as it looks like there isn't one right now.

![]() |

Stealthy, hmm? Okay, I've got some beginnings of ideas for a story. The character will start out as a Rogue, less combat-focused than most. It will probably be a Spymaster later (I'm assuming we start at 1st level). You're familiar with it? I think it's in Complete Adventurer. If you don't like it, just say so, and I'll change.
I'll post the story in a short while.

I have the CA, and a rouge would probably fit in very well with this party. (I don't think Spy Master would cause an issue in later adventures.)
Yes everyone starts level 1 as this is the start of the AP1. By the end of book 1 you should be level 4.
Zoe.

Zoe |

Incarnates are more like Paladins.
low BAB progression, medium armor, Aura, buffs for him and those with the same alignment...
No spells, but kind of magic items he can change every day.
That's it basically.
Ya I was going over what they can do, I really want to see them in action the class looks very interesting. So you can stand in the front lines pretty much?
That makes the group pretty versatile, having 2 up front guys, 1 sorcerer type for magical blasts, a druid that can fill a healing role fine, with additional magic abilities for controlling a battlefield, and a sneaky guy.
I think we may just have a party made :)
Zoe.

Zoe |

Just to clarify - we're using pure 3.5 rules, right? No Pathfinder stuff? Flipping through the descripitions of the races and such, I see the pathfinder gods and whatnot listed, and I just didn't know if you meant only to use the setting or also the mechanics.
Seeing as it looks we have 5 spots filled why don't we vote before we roll up stats?
Vote: 3.5 or Pathfinder?
