So, on August 1st we GMs will be getting the modules we'll be running for Gen Con. I'd really like to organize some slot 0s so we all get a chance to play most of these prior to judging them. I'd be willing to eat 1 or 2 but I'd like to play in the others, if possible.
I live in the Indianapolis, IN area (where Gen Con is being held). How many other volunteer GMs live in/ around this area that would be willing to slot 0 an event or two?
In the event that we can't put together any slot 0s from the people on this list, I will get my local group to run some of these for me prior to GenCon and then I can run some slot 0s for you guys prior to your judging them. I usually help out with Living Greyhawk's Pre GenCon Madness the Wednesday before the con starts. Since LG is now defunct, I won't be DMing there this year and so I could very easily switch to run PF slot 0s instead.
If we CAN get a table together here in the Indy area (or if anyone else plays these mods prior to coming in for the con), that means I'll have more people available (hopefully) to judge some 'last minute' slot 0s for the rest of you guys.
Please let me know:
- if you live in this area and would like to get a table together as soon as we get the mods on Aug 1st.
- if you can arrange your schedule to come in to Indy on Tuesday night or Wednesday and would like to slot 0 a module.
- if you can slot 0 your mods at home, then volunteer to GM the slot 0s here in Indy on Wednesday.
If there's enough of a response, I'll set up an account on Warhorn to get everyone signed up to play. Feel free to post here or email me off-list: jmweber9@comcast.net
Lastly, if anyone has any questions regarding Indy and how to get around, hotels to stay at, etc. please feel free to email me off-list about that, too.

Hey folks,
We're still short a few GMs for Pathfinder Society at Gen Con. If any of you signed up to play these slots can switch to GM, it would be greatly appreciated. If we end up with too many GMs, you can easily be switched back to playing on the fly. I want to be sure we have enough GMs + alternates to insure every table is covered.

I won't be attending GenCon, but if you need volunteers for running zeroes - running, NOT PLAYING - I will be happy to run as many rounds as needed. I can host in Eugene, or travel up to 3 hours. Running online is an option, I'm fairly experienced at hosting online games with either AIM or OPENRPG. The unofficial chatroom would also suffice.
Let me know if help getting zeroes moving is wanted and/or welcome...I'm happy to take a few rounds for the team to make sure the GenCon volunteers get a chance to (1) see the mods early and (2) play them.

One other quick note: we need board game demo volunteers inside the Paizo booth as well. If you want to help, but feel you can't run Pathfinder Society slots, then come help us demo! Same reward structure, except slots are:
Fri
10-2Sat
10-2Thanks!
Just sent an email to see if you still need help with these two slots.

We are looking for a few world-class GMs to wrangle more than a hundred bad guys for the greatest Gen Con game of all time! (I hope!)
If you think you can't go to Gen Con, well think again! It's once a year, and for some events, it's once in a lifetime!
This is the year you can go and later say "I went to play Pathfinder during its first playtest! I was there!"
Or, you can later crack open an awesome adventure in your adventure path collection and say "See that picture? I played that guy!"
This is the year that gaming memories will be made. I note there were some new hotel rooms that were close by and not outrageously expensive through the Gen Con Housing. I save $600 just not switching to one.
You CAN make it to Gen Con. But yuo can't drink Logue's Dews.
Those belong to me and Booms.

Ancientsensei, I know Nick was supposed to put me on the GM list...but I know he's been terribly busy as of late. Can you be a sweetie and check for me? I have cookies. :P

Hey folks,
We're down to just a few slots where we need help:
Thursday AM 8-12
Thursday PM 1-5
Friday PM 1-5
I could use 1-2 GMs for each of those slots. If you know anyone who is going and can take some time to volunteer as a GM, please point them at this thread.
If any of you are playing these time slots and want to cross over to GM land, contact me.

Lilith - I am pretty sure I have you on the list, but I have only known you as Lilith, so I had to try to look you up by name. I also don't have your email address.
Send me a gmail and I'll be sure there's not a Lilith imposter invited.
Thanks for your help...this has been a lot of work, but I don't think I've ever seen anything like it!

Couple of Questions. Do we know when the PFS Players & DM's guides will be out? Are they already out and I just cant find them? Also will we be allowed to use laptops at GenCon in the PF room? I know when I went in 2005 I was told not to due to Electrical Union issues. (Dont ask.)
August 1st they will be available.

I don't know if it was sanctioned by the convention center, but 2 years ago at Gen Con 2006, I was in a session where the DM used their laptop. It was an individual RPG session, and not associated with a large group like RPGA or anything.

From the discussions on the RPGA judges list I get the impression the CC doesn't like cords reaching across floors. So if you have an outlet, I think its fine. For example, I've used my lappie at GenCon before while running tournaments for Decipher back in the day, but it was only plugged in while I was on the dais where the powerstrips were :).

Amazing: The most economically viable convention outside arms dealing and they are too cheap to pay proper wages.
Since you brought it up.
Tier 1 GM: 32 hours
Free 4 day badge ($65-$75 value)
1/4 hotel room (4 nights, 1 room split 4 ways, est. $45/night; $180)
$40 voucher
--
Approximately $9.22 to $8.90/hr
Tier 2 GM: 16 to 28 hours
Free 4 day badge ($65-$75 value)
$5 voucher per slot ran ($20 to $35 value)
--
Approximately $5.31 to $3.93/hr
Tier 3 GM: 8 to 12 hours
$5 voucher per slot ran ($10 to $15 value)
--
Approximately $1.25/hr
However, the following breakdown might be more valid for analysis.
vol*un*teer
1. a person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking.
2. a person who performs a service willingly and without pay.

Sad realy.
What I think is sad is when people decide to say something dour just for attention.
Paizo has roughly the same package as the RPGA, so it isn't like they aren't meeting the 'standard of care' for convention judges. Combine the reality that it's a game with the economics of shelling out 100 hotel rooms, renting huge booth space, shutting down your offices, organizing the Pathfinder Society purely as advertisement, etc; and anyone can see your post should never have happened.
Paizo is very tolerant on their boards, and it's a free country(for now, at least), so this little bit of advice comes from only me: How about you put some thought into your next post and not throw anyone under the bus without considering what you're about to say?
This thing where self-important gamers piss on the game companies belongs at the LARP after party, not on the boards of the company that is trying to save the game formerly known as DnD.

Exploiter of others: someone who profits from the toil of others with little or no cost.
Common Lillith, you know its only Volunteerism if it is for charity. It is cheap labour when it is not for charity or social benifit. Otherwide Volunteer would be poor people fleeing Poverty and failed government signing up to die in Afghanistan so corporations can get control of Oil.

So, let me get this straight . . .
I'm going to Gen Con, probably to play games . . .
Paizo needs people to play specific games in order to help them promote their products . . .
So in exchange for me doing something I was going to pay to do, I now get some form of compensation, with the only condition really being that I play a specific game a specific way?
I LIKE to GM games . . . I do it every week at my FLGS for my gaming group without any compensation at all. Its what I do to have fun. Why would this be Paizo exploiting me?

I'm in agreement that complaining about the rewards is silly, but I've never viewed free con admision as a significant perk when you're giving up half or more of your con to run. The value goes way down when your time is not your own.
Steven T. Helt RPG Superstar 2013 |
What I like is when people who complain have:
a. a stake in what they're complaining about. What's your beef, yella? You have a bad DMing experience at a Con when you were a child? Evil gaming tycoons repossess your house and kick you out on the street?
b. a solution. Cause nothing is less impressive than people who shift from 'sad, really' to 'exploiters' without offering a better idea, and having a stronger reason to complain about it than to let it go.
I agree the swag could be a little deeper from my perspective. It's probably impossible to offer more at this date from Paizo, from their perspective. You and I don't know the economics of the company. WHat we do know is they have been preparing a fledgling organization at big cost, at a convention that might have folded in July, in the year that they had to distance themselves from a company and product line that has previously been there bread and butter.
Yella, do you want this company to save 3.5ish DnD or not?
Oh, and volunteerism isn't for charity...that's poor use of the word charity. By definition, volunteers are doing what they want for the purposes that suit them. Who are you to tell Shane Cottom the work he's done on Ascension of the Drow isn't worht it?
I wouldn't say it to his face. He's a marine.
Albeit a small one. : }

While I'm not in any way complaining (both becuase I don't see a problem, and I don't qualify for a., since I'm not DMing, I do have an idea that would be very cool for the volunteers if it could be implemented in the future. It might even get me to consider DMing instead of playing at a future Gen Con. I think it would be a really great reward if the Gen Con DMs could have the opportunity to have the PFS events round zeroed for them by a "celebrity" DM, i.e. a Paizo staff member of well known contributor. At a past Gen Con, I was very happily surprized that one of the RPGA events I had signed up for had none other than Skip Williams as the DM for my table. Not only did he do a great job (turned a sub-par adventure into a fun time), but I got a kick out of having one of the creators of 3E run a game for me.
I don't know how many DMs are involved with the Paizo events, but there's a lot of Paizo staff - probably enough to each run a table and cover all the volunteer DMs.
Joshua J. Frost |
I might add that the hotels are nearly three times more expensive than what Lilith quoted, but it really doesn't matter.
I've offered what Paizo can spare to reward our volunteers. We treat our volunteers very well, in my opinion. Is there more we could do? Yup. Can we do those things right now? Nope. Can we do them in the future when our volunteers help make us more successful? Yup.
If what we can offer our volunteers for helping us doesn't appeal to you, then it doesn't appeal to you. No need to pop onto the boards and start discouraging folks from helping out -- that'll just result in less volunteers which will, in turn, result in less rewards.
I love our volunteers. They've made the life of our conventions guy (me) much, much easier. I appreciate them and wish I could offer them more. Some day, I might be able to.
I have heard your complains, Yellowdingo. Let's move on.
