Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

Been playing since the 1E AD&D days, but I've never used any Paizo products. Pathfinder interests me, and I'm very much interested in keeping my 3.5E games alive.

I'm also going to be playing some 4E, I expect, and I'm glad to see there is a place to discuss 4E here as well. The WotC forums have become dominated by a bunch of argumentative idiots. Unless that's the case here as well, I'm going to make this my new home and I suspect I'll end up subscribing to/buying quite a few Paizo products as the coming weeks and months unfold.

Nice to see an active community here!

Hello again Steerpike!

Although I said hello in another thread, let me just say it is always good to see another 'old skool' gamer show up.

As a wanderer of various gaming messageboards throughout the years (and a few MMORPG ones as well during what I now call 'the dark times') I can honestly tell you there are more intellegent, reasoned folks here than I've seen at any other spot. Plus, as an added bonus, the folks at Paizo actually post on the boards regularly. Even when the folks here bicker about which game is best (which I fear you will find on ANY board) they usually do so in a reasoned manner (for a while at least). Always good to have another voice in the chorus

Thanks again, Patrick. I appreciate it.

I'm very much looking forward to becoming part of the community here, and to getting in to the Pathfinder products.

The welcome has been very nice!

Welcome to the community. Glad to have you and I hope you enjoy yourself!

New here too, so I guess that I can use this thread as introduction.

Before anything, I must say that I've bought 4e, I've read it, and I think I'm going to DM it soon. I hope that doesn't makes me unworthy to be here...

Because even if I like 4e, I like 3e too, thay are very different tastes of D&D, and I think I can love both of them.

So when yesterday I took time to read PfRPG, I had an epiphany. It has the choses that I love in 4e (at will power, every level has rewards...) but it still sounds like 3.5e.

So I think I'm going to use PfRPG for my old style D&D campaigns, and 4e for some exciting "beer and pretzels" hack & slash evenings.

Oh, and to finish my introduction, I'm Spanish, I live in France, and in EN World forums my nick is my name, Horacio.

Hey LostinBrittany.

I'm in the same boat with you - I'm going to play 3.5E and 4E. I'm not interesting in reading juvenile hate threads directed to either edition (and so I'm not going to be spending much time in the WotC forums anymore).

So far, looks very good here. There are a few lame 4e hate posts, but you're going to get a baseline of that anywhere I think. For the most part, posters of that mentality seem much more marginalized here.

Welcome!

Welcome both of you!
Personally I don't care what edition of the game (or even what game) you lay and I hope those few (but rather noisy) hate-posters that are around these days in the 4th. ed forum won't bother you to much. I hope you make yourself a cozy home on these boards.

Thanks for the welcome :)

I really like these forums (besides some nasty 4e hating posts) and that in a few days I will feel at home here, as I do at EN World.

welcome both of you. People like what they like long as you enjoy it then it doesn't matter what ya play.

Hey there Steerpike!

Grab a chair and dust off those old Arduin books. The are some Cheetos behind the Mountain Dew.

I'm with Fey - even if you decide some of these games and editions arn't for you, if you look hard enough on these boards there are conversions for the first adventure path into at least 2 or 3 other game systems.

Welcome to the Paizo section of the world! This is really a great group of people. I think much of the 4e hating vs 3e hating posts will die down as the luster of the new 4e release fades and people just get back to playing games, which is really why we are all here. I know that I have had a lot of fun playing all types of RPGs and other games in my gaming career, and I am sure you can find people here who think like you do. One thing I will note, this is one of the most creative groups that I have been a part of, and I have had my games augmented with their creations regularly. Matter of fact, I used a fan created mp3 of the goblin song from Rise of the Runelords in my game last night (the mp3 without the screams, for those who know what I am talking about).

So, once again, welcome!

-Lisa

Welcome to the community. Lot of people here are more then willing to help with any questions. And the Paizo staff are amazing, as are the products. You will not regret your purchases, and will always get your monies worth.

Welcome, steerpike.

Where do you hail from?

Have you been mostly a player, or a DM? Home campaign, or RPGA organized play? Home-designed campaign world or one of the published settings? What's been your favorite scene / incident in all the RPGing you've done?

Hey everyone; thanks again for all of the welcoming!

I am primarily a DM, though I do play from time to time as well. I began using Greyhawk primarily. I tried FR once, but didn't care for it.

Now I use predominantly a homebrew campaign world, although we're starting up with an Iron Kingdoms campaign, which is one of my favorite d20 settings.

In my current homebrew world, magic is heavily house-ruled. Due to the events at the end of a war 1000 years in the past, the magic system has become heavily tainted. Anyone can try to cast spells, but it's pretty deadly for non-casters to try it (and can even be quite dangerous for casters). I borrowed the idea of corruption points from the Conan RPG. The PCs are actively trying to fix the magic in the world so that it is not tainted (long story short, most of the "good" energy associated with magic is tied up in a powerful artifact that has served to keep all of the evil dragons in the world in a state of imposed hibernation since their role in a war that almost destroyed everything - the only arcane energy left to draw on is mostly evil).

Never been involved in any of the RPGA events.

I'm also currently a player in a Star Wars RPG.

And I play online games as well - LotRO, DDO, and Vanguard presently :)

Favorite scene or incident in all of the gaming I've done?

That's too hard to say. There have been so many.

Here's a cool one from fairly recently:

The party is fighting a high-level monster that, when you get near it, causes your lungs to fill with water and you have to make drowning checks. The PCs are starting to drop like flies. No one is dead yet, but people are unconscious and dying. This includes the caster in the party, who was just trying to get off a spell to finish off the monster (who is almost dead by this time as well).

So the rogue runs over to the spell book of the unconscious wizard (see what I wrote above about anyone casting spells) and starts to try to cast the spell the wizard was going to use to end the monster. Normally I would say he'd have to take time to study it, but given the dire situation and the fact that he's got almost no chance of pulling it off, I make the decision as a DM to say he can try to cast it just from reading it out of the spell book. So the rogue tries it.

The spell fails horribly and there is a burst of uncontained magical energy. It shoots off in a random direction (this is according to our standard house rules for a failed spell, which can kill the attempted caster outright if powerful enough). The rogue himself doesn't see the end result of the action because the impact of the failed spell almost kills him outright and he's unconscious and dying as well. So I roll the random direction for the uncontrolled magical energy, and it goes straight at the monster. What are the odds? Monster is hit and killed and the drowning effect on the characters dissipates. The rogue stabilizes and everyone comes around, eventually, to find the monster dead, though none of the characters know exactly what killed it because they were all passed out.

Anyway - what looked to be a TPK turned into no one dying and the PCs being successful. It still gets talked about amongst the PCs.

One in eight, or 12,5% ;P (Provided you use a d8 for direction)

Anyway, welcome, you two.

Heh...yeah the odds aren't really that bad, but still it was one of the only times that runaway magic has hit a monster instead of a party member or nothing.

I use a d12 and the direction is like the hands of a clock, with the direction the PC is facing being 12:00.

Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome, young fellow. [Chuckle ... I've finally grown so old I can say that with very little fear of being wrong ...]

I have the same reaction to what's happening on the WOTC forum as you do, and usually come here for some relief.

It's not perfect here -- you'll find some of the 'argumentation' continues even in these calmer waters. But, like you, I feel this is a better place. A little more of the 'live and let live' philosophy.

And, apparently also like you, I'll be dabbling in both 4E and PFRPG. I now own quite a few Pathfinder products, and I'm extremely pleased with the quality. I hope you will be, too.

Thanks for the welcome, OldSchool.

I'm definitely looking forward to the Paizo products. I downloaded Imprisoned with the Pharaohs (or something close to that title) yesterday and I'm looking forward to running it!

Hi,

I am new here too, so I decided to use this thread also to introduction myself.
I started playing DnD the year they cam out with the blue box then I quickly moved to Advance DnD when it came out.
I have a Wednesday fight gaming group that has been play role-playing games for the last 8 years. We have decided as a group to stay with 3.5 vs. going to 4.0.
We have had some talk about Pathfinder, so I decide to check it out. I download the alpha and I am reading it now. So far I realty like what I have seen.

Good to see you . I am one of tose who doesnt post regularly but can honestly agree with everyone. Yoe wont find a more welcoming bunch. I to have played FR, Iron kingdoms, Star Wars and Greyhawk, but I think you will find that Pathfinder is something else! When you take into acount how long its been going the results are amazing!

Greetings to you Steerpike7! You downloaded one of my favorites! Be sure to check out Pathfinder Society Organized Play as well! Fun stuff on the horizon!

Welcome to all the new folks. These boards are a very nice place for RPGers, with much help to be had, cool products to be bought (my credit card weeps every time...), and nice and crazy folks to be met :-) Just a few weeks ago, one of the regulars here even organized a small paizocon up in Seattle - a little too far away for me to attend, but still worth mentioning IMO to highlight the spirit of these boards.

Stefan

oh, and these boards are quite international - folks from all over the world post here. I found a fellow gamer via these boards - he is from Spain, and we play in english in the middle of Germany...

I suspect much of that has to do with the recent forum reorg over there. They essentially eliminated all of the 3.5 boards and converted them overnight into 4e forums. The people who want to keep playing and discussing 3.5 who used to be spread over 12+ boards have all been shunted into a single ghetto board. So now the disillusioned 'previous version' users are either wandering aimlessly around their forums stirring up trouble or have cut and run for greener pastures.

Welcome to greener pastures.

Entombed with the Pharoahs is a good module. While I don't post much, I have found that most users here are very respectable, even on the 3E/4E issue.

Hey, Lisa Stevens (Paizo CEO) and Nick Logue (Pathfinder OP Coordinator and sick-o extraordinaire) both welcomed you to the boards. What other company stays this close to their fans?

Spoiler:
Just watch that Logue guy. If he offers to take you under the bridge and show you something neat, run.

Yeah, looking at this welcome thread makes me all warm and fuzzy for Paizo all over again!

(And what Nick has under that bridge IS pretty neat... even if you can never walk in the daylight again...)

I'm a recent refugee from the WotC boards as well - welcome to the new home of gaming sanity.

Unlike you, I was a HUGE FR fan, but I found all the negativity over there drove me further and further from the setting I loved. Strangely, since coming here and learning about Golarion it has rekindled the love I have for RPGimg and the Realms (along with Golarion, of course).

I discovered that the atmosphere of the place you hang in can have a big effect on your enjoyment, so styaing away from the WotC boards allows me to enjoy D&D more.

Funny how that works out.
