Paizo gave my email address to Spammers

Customer Service

Sirs,

I have recently received spam email addressed to the email account I use only for Paizo purposes. I create a custom email address for each business/website I interact with in the form paizo@bmcdaniel.XXXX.com. I have only used this email address at the Paizo website so I am confident to a moral certainty that the problem originates from Paizo.

I will block this email address and change the email address I use for Paizo, but before I do, can you please describe your policy about circulating customer email addresses outside Paizo, and let me know what steps you are taking to make sure that this doesn't happen again. Obviously, I think this is an extremely serious matter.

Yours,

Brian McDaniel

Just FYI: spammers are known for "mining" email addresses. I have an email address I've NEVER used as an input to a webform or in a transaction and I still get spam.

Just sayin' Paizo mihgt not have done anything with your address; the spammer might have gotten lucky (or you unlucky, whichever).

It's simple: we don't.

I'm confident your email address was mined by process of elimination. I have a gmail address, for example, that I never use to sign up for anything (which means I don't input it into anything on the web anywhere) and it took a year after I signed up for it, but eventually I began receiving spam anyway.

Paizo does not share customer email addresses with anyone.

Just to clarify, this wasn't the same paizo@bmcdaniel.fastmail.fm email address that was posted openly on the message boards here...?

I mean, even if it isn't exactly, it would provide the basis for spambots to apply to other extensions (like yahoo.com, gmail.com, etc. etc...). I'm actually be surprised it didn't happen earlier than this.

You have said that, "...I am confident to a moral certainty that the problem originates from Paizo." How can you be so morally certain? Perhaps that problem originates from you? Before I can assign blame, I would need to find a way to measure each side's morality. To do so would be almost impossible, because each person has a different view of morality.

For example, in certain cultures it is moral to have more than one wife, but here in the USA it is considered immoral by the majority of Americans. Mr. MBC Daniel, you should not be so "confident" of your morality. I find this whole thing highly immoral on so many different levels.

Our official privacy policy is posted here. (I updated it today to rephrase the sections related to magazine subscriptions in the past tense, but it has otherwise been the same for years.)

I can't believe he actually typed it out without subbing 'dot' for '.' and all the other little tricks to avoid getting an address lifted. Nice catch from a year ago, Jester.

Oops. So much for email hygiene. One little slip is all it took, and a year later it comes crashing back ...

Sounds like the title of this thread needs to change to " Paizo didn't give my email address to Spammers."

I give him props for coming back and recanting, instead of getting defensive and going off on a huffy diatribe.

Don't feel bad bmc dude. I've been snippy over products, the store, and ordering a few times and it always turns out that Paizo is doing their best, bending over backwards even to give me service, and that my being pissed off is unnecessary.

We're customers. It's our God given right to make false accusations.

Heathy's right, Bmcdaniel. Props to you.

And props for taking the peener-spam text out of your original post.

Yah, bmc dude, you're cool.

Plus this thread just brightened up my day.

Now we're gonna keep it on the top ten all day.

But that's all in the past. Five days from now, he'll be getting his one-week pin!

By the way, Vic, I ordered all my stuff. I got the postage down to about 24 bucks. So with the postage up I'm not getting the $10 dollar discount anymore but the rates are only a little higher with you guys taking a hit on some of the postage.

Thanks!

Sorry for being b!@#!y.
