Stores in Portland, OR?

Gamer Connection

Hi All,

I am going to be on vacation in Portland, Oregon next week. Can anyone offer any suggestions on decent gaming stores to visit?

Thanks!

Sovereign Court

When I lived down there I always liked Bridgetown .

And, regardless of gaming stuff, which they also have (new & used), you should check out Powell's Bookstore, which is a city landmark. And rightfully so. But Bridgetown has a very nice selection of stuff, for sure. There's another place whose name escapes me that opened up this past year. If I can think of it, I'll post again...

Absolutely! If you hit Powell's on Burnside it's easy to head over the bridge and then take Sandy right up to Bridgetown. Stop at Old Wives Tale for lunch in between and it's a perfect day. (I really miss their Hungarian Mushroom soup!)

Terrific! Much obliged!

And no visit to Portland is complete without dinner at the Berlin Inn. Great German food, great German beer and wines, and fantastic desserts! Small place, so make a reservation ahead of time.
Check out www.berlininn.com

Right next door is a great German deli (Edelweiss Sausage and Deli): lunch sandwiches, interesting bottled beer to go...

And don't forget you are in beer nirvana! Check out www.oregonbeer.org for a map of Portland's breweries, alehouses and pubs. Concordia Ale House and the 5th Quadrant (New Old Lompoc) are some of my favorites.

Can you tell that I am part German - and that I really enjoy quality beer? :-)

Cheers!

(As you were. Back on topic.)

Just my two cents. I never visit Portland without hitting Bridgetown and if I have time I spend a few hours at Powells. If you have never been to Powells you should plan to take some time. It is a one of a kind experience.

Thanks Lori, a very worthy threadjack, indeed!

Had to jump in on the threadjack. I've been spending Thanksgiving at the Berlin Inn, w/ a friend, for the past few years. It's a wonderful small restaurant. Nice brunch on the weekend, too.

Trey, if you think of another type of restaurant you'd like to try, post here. I eat out a lot...and Portland is a great city for food & beer.

I think sushi and seafood mostly. My girlfriend has serious food allergies, so we have to stick to places where you can get unseasoned food (onions, garlic, and anything related, and seasonings that include them are the main things we have to watch out for). For anything else, I will be hitting that great market I hear you have out there and cooking.

Bridgetown and Powell's are a must.

If you drive an extra three hours south, we can have a beer (and cookies) together. :P

We are, but in the other direction, Southwest rather than Southeast. Raincheck it for Paizocon II, though, because I am shooting to make it this time. :D

Yikes. I wouldn't know what to recommend now b/c of your girlfriend's food allergies. I never think about what's on my food. Actually, another Portland landmark, besides Powell's, is Jake's Seafood (or Jake's...something). It's actually just a few blocks from Powell's, and has been known for great seafood (amazing selection) for decades. Go to Powell's mid- to late afternoon, and then walk over to Jake's. Doesn't hurt to make recommendations :) I bet you could get something ordered for her unseasoned (and you yourself could go hog wild).

Lobster and crab almost always can be, because lots of folks like 'em with nothing but butter. :)

And as for me, you got it, oink! oink!

Thanks again for the suggestions, everyone. You're helping me get really excited about the trip.

I'll give another plug for Old Wives then. My girlfriend at that time had a number of dietary restrictions and that's one of the reasons it became one of our favorites.

As far as sushi goes there's a TODAI around Portland. Official fun restaurant of Paizocon!

Thanks, Pete. Is Todai the sushi place with the trains? My dad mentioned that.

Sovereign Court

I don't remember trains... must be someplace else. TODAI is all you can eat sushi ( right up there in my list of 5 favorite words to put together).

Lone Shark Games

I would stop in at Rainy Day Games, Portland's Premier Gaming Center.

Also highly recommended: a stop at Voodoo Doughnut.

Just want to add that I live about 45 minutes North of P-town and I visit Bridgetown and Powell's a lot. I don't know about Rainy Day Games, though, I'll have to check it out.

Trey, TODAI is in Pioneer Place, which is centrally located downtown (a mall megaplex that covers 2 blocks). You could have lunch at TODAI, spend the afternoon in Powell's (an easy walk from Pioneer Place), and then feast at Jake's for dinner. Heh heh. Well, maybe you'd want to spread those 2 out over 2 or more days...

That gaming store is actually in Aloha, not Portland. I don't know it but it could be worth the ride. Voodoo Doughnut, on the other hand, is smack dab in the middle of downtown. It gets a more...interesting...crowd as the night gets later. Not the nicest part of downtown, but the donuts can safely be called unique. And delicious. We get them sometimes for work.
