Fundraising to Help David Pirkola, Comics Retailer

I've been a customer of Apparitions Comics & Books for about 12 years now. In the more than 20 years that I've collected comics and been a patron of numerous shops, its owner Dave is the only one who dutifully fulfilled my pull list without trying to pad it with tie-ins he "thought I would like" and then pressuring me to buy them, or giving me a sour opinion on one of the books I collected. He has a clean, well-organized store with a healthy stock of back issues, out of print books, interesting collectibles, and rare RPG products.

It's been several months since I stopped in, as my teaching job took me to closer to home and I couldn't justify the cost of time and gas to make the pilgrimage to he opposite side of town. So, when my father-in-law shared with me the news that Dave had been robbed, shot, and critically injured, it was a heavy blow.

With apologies if I'm breaking forum etiquette, and hopes that you'll excuse me if I am, here's a way that fans can give a little to make a big difference for Dave:

Thanks for your time.

The url you posted didn't go anywhere, but with a little searching I found this page and linkified it. I hope this one is what you were hoping to post.

Oh, and I don't see this as breaking any sort of etiquette. I'd say this is the internet doing one of its jobs. Networking geeks in need and raising awareness. I hope he gets better and his store stays strong through this period.

That's indeed where I was hoping to direct folks; thanks, Daigle.

I've tried to get more news on Dave's condition since getting the news Friday, but the family that's with him at the hospital is keeping things pretty private at the moment.

Just the other day, my wife was teasing me about being a "geek." (Or at least "half-geek" which in her mind makes our infant daughter "quarter-geek.") But, seeing how many "geeks" who don't know Dave at all are working to help him, I can say--I'm proud to be a geek.

Yep. From my experiences, we geeks are good folk, for the most part.

Man, that sucks. You all know how many of those other types of store owners/workers there are...havent run into a 'pressure sales' type in a long time, but had the 'disinterested/snob' type for the longest time. And the one that was probably on drugs and couldnt keep monthly orders straight (went out of business in less than a year and had an amazing sale right before he moved away).

Robbing a comic store, what is this world coming to?

Yeah, that kinda caught my attention, too.

This is where I usually rant about the state of the world, humanity, and the evil within our souls, but I'm not going to.

I wish I could donate something, but I'm really strapped for cash right now. However, I wish him luck. Peace out.

Thanks for those who've sent warm thoughts or even made a small donation to help Dave. I stopped by and picked up some of the few D&D 3.5 books that weren't already in my gaming library, and the store looks good.

As an update, two of the three people believed to be involved in the robbery and shooting have been in custody for well over a week. Dave remains in critical but stable condition.

Thanks for the update! Best wishes for your friend on a quick and clear recovery.

Wow, $5500 has been raised so far, it's nice to see the geek brotherhood pull together like that.
Best wishes for your friend's recovery.

I was in there on Saturday and grabbed a couple of t-shirts (the store is about 3-4 blocks from my apartment). Dave's niece came in during that time so I got to hear a lot of what's been going on. It sounds like he may be getting out of ICU this week *crosses fingers*. He's a great guy and I hope to have more money to support the store soon.
