Intention of fly skill revealed

I guess there will be a (new) flying race in the corebook, maybe a Dragon-Kin?

I've heard of no such thing. Is this just wild speculation, or is there more to this?

wild speculation, of course

But after thinking about the new skill for about seven weeks I found this to be the a valid explanation.

Liberty's Edge

They have said that they will not be adding in a flying race. They've said they will not be creating a new 'core' race or a new 'core' class.

At least, that's what I'm pretty sure Paizo said in plain English.

A thread like this should either be clear at the beginning that it is speculation, or be put in the General forum. This has nothing to do with anything that is included in the Alpha 2 Document.

I think the point is just that it allows a check-based mechanic, rather than an automatic stage-based ability for flying. It also stops PCs getting Mass Fly and just zipping around like 200-pound armoured sword-wielding hummingbirds. It means that high-level PCs who use this tactic are going to have to put some skill ranks into this skill so they can do it, which is great.

Common ground seems to be that putting the flying ability into a skill systems gives more players more control about this kind of movement.
If not in a corebook I'm pretty sure that there will be more flying races soon.

On a side note: It makes perfect sense to treat flying like this if you already give other kinds of movement such a treatment (like swimming and climbing)

In fact you don't really need a new core race in the first PRPG Book, because you already can play dragon-kin and others to simulate the "new" 4E Races, but it would be fine to see this stuff collected and cosnolidated in one place.

Personally, the Fly skill is making me look forward to Pathfinder's Oriental Adventures rather much.

"Why is your fighter taking the fly skill?"
"Knowledge of flight dynamics is vital to proper sword training."

Actually, given half-fiend, half-celestial, and half-dragon, I'm glad there's a FLY skill. Besides, I can use it as the central mechanic to dogfighting rules that I'm debating on swiping from somewhere else. No more two hovering opponents just pounding on each other - time for the loops and barrel rolls I expect from winged combattants.
