Adventure between Hook Mountain and Fortress of the Stone Giants

Well, last weekend, we finished Hook Mountain Massacre and I must be doing something right, 'cause the players want more! They have convinced me to start Fortress this weekend. However, the group is primarily 8th level with a few 9th level characters.

So I am looking for some sort of adventure to have while they are on their way to Sandpoint. Has anyone had this situation arise? Or can recommend something relatively quick and easy to prepare and run?

How are they getting home?

Probably walking/riding via land. The wizard is only 8th level so no teleports (yet).

Hmm... How about Carnival of Tears, with less mayhem, more powerful villains, and adjusted to Sandpoint? Or you could get them blown off course on a sea voyage, sending them to ... The Crucible of Chaos!

I had an idea for a little side-treck. Here's the broad strokes;

I wanted to use some of the variant sinspawn, and another Runewell rising, in a remote location this time. Either the plot of another Lamia Matriarch (seeing as Lucrecia was a green snake rogue, and xanesha was a cobra sorceror, this one would be a python grapple-fighter. She would find an active greed runewell placed somewhere between Sandpoint and Hook Mountain, and start building things up. First, abduct a few greedy people, kill them near the runewell, and make a sinspawn. abduct more people, but now they dont have to be greedy; just have the sinspawn bite them right before they get killed. Wash, rinse and repeat. eventualy, she gets together a whole squad of greedspawn rogues, and they start raiding nearby villiages.

One point is that this matriarch is a young one that doesnt have quite the vision for something subtle or involved, like the other two. her plan is straightforeward and reliable.

The location itself would be an isolated forest ruin that used to be the site for a remote enclave of transmuters. Or, actualy, this could take place on an island to the north, along the lost coast. Needs to be isolated, anyway. One of the odd traits of the plantlife there is that it can "evolve" extremely rapidly. You think to yourself "I wish I had a pencil" and a small bush starts absorbing graphite into it's twigs. Need a smoke? A milkweed-like plant grows square pods full of little round white cylinders, with cork filters (the filters contain seeds that sprout when heated by fire). It's a remnant from thassilon, when the wizards altered the plantlife to provide them whatever they wanted.

Anyway, one of the greedspawn in particular gets uppity, and decides that he'd make a better chief of the new spawn than the Matriarch, and orchestrates a insurrection. the PCs come along just as the Greedspawn are mounting up to start raiding, and the matriarch is trying to figure out how to get her operation back under her control.

Encounters with plant monsters, greedspawn ninjas, and a fighter-lamia matriarch would feature.

Really, if you need some good side-quests, take a chance to stretch your creative legs a bit. look through the varisia gazetter and the beistaries, and find something that fires your imagination, then run with it.

I have The Crucible of Chaos pencilled in as the adventure in our AP for the same spot.

getting them to a remote mountain place is not that hard from Hook Mountain...maybe.

just be prepared to have them take the flying city to Xin-Shalast.

Im adding an adventure out of Dungeon Magazine where they face off against A hill giant cleric and a blue dragon in a Frost Giant Fortress(its ment for 11th level where my characters will more then likly be)
Im cutting out the first part and just doing the Fortress I belive it called into the Abyss I will have to check later

I wrote an adventure set in Sanos Forest. An order of rangers had been defending a place called Earthroot for generations, but Mokmurian had sent in a team to try to seize control of it, and turned some of the rangers against the others. Earthroot turned out to have been corrupted long ago by Karzoug. The PCs allied with the still-loyal rangers and went in after the others, then had to deal with the consequences of the corruption. It worked pretty well, establishing more about Mokmurian before the showdown. I have a partial writeup of the adventure if anyone wants it.

The PCs used some of Earthroot's magic to find other Thassilonian sites, and I tucked in the middle episode of "Spawn of Seshan" (or something like that) from Dungeon Magazine as an additional site now controlled by servants of Lamashtu. It didn't work as well, mostly because the dungeon seemed very flat--not one of my better adaptations.

Sanos Forest is fertile ground for adventures: any faerie-woods style module should fit well here. If you have any old Ravenloft modules around, some of them would also work well for darker parts of the forest. I think parts of _Feast of Goblyns_ should be the right level: that was always a favorite of ours.

one of our faves too, we must have run this 5 times. We always began at level 4 for Feast Of Goblyns. I dont know how much of a challenge this module would be to lvl 8-9 characters without serious modifications though.

My suggestion is Mellorn Hospitality (7th level/Dungeon #107) by Russell Brown and beef it up to your level. Its one of my favorite modules from Dungeon mag and you can drop it into any forest etc.

Late Edit** I just might take my own advice, I originally planned to run Mellorn myself during the Shackled City AP, I even had the group meet some of the Mellorn Elves at the Lucky Monkey during Flood Season (minor sub-plot link for later use). Ill look into putting this into RotRL when I run it.

I think a good roleplaying adventure would be good; supposedly Fortress is a pretty Dungeoncrawl-thick adventure.
