My group is meeting in a few days, after just finishing Burnt Offerings the last time we met. It didn't hit me until about ten minutes ago, but I am in a bit of a pickle with the Skinsaw Murders adventure. The character Aldern had his obsession over died in the fight with Nualia. I know it is still possible to run the adventure, and it would be quite easy to omit the obsession entirely, but it definitely adds another level of creepy to The Skinsaw Man. What should I do?

You should do what you think is right for your group.
What I can recommend, is have Aldern become obsessed with a party member he'd be most jealous of (assuming that wasn't the case originally). I also imagine he'd be very upset with the rest of the party for "letting" his initial target die "improperly."
With more info about your group I could give better advice.
I hope what I've already given is acceptable.

Turning to wrath and blaming the pc's is, in my humble opinion the best way to go. Especially if your players are anything like mine as they'd loot the still warm corpse of their fallen comrade (most likey calling dibs on whatever items took their fancy before she even hit the ground!!)
If they really are like my group then its unlikely they'll bring back the body for proper burial, which will outrage Aldern even more.

.....- does aldern dig her up, ...?
Oh THATS sweet!!!!!
she could maybe come back as a zombie perhaps? Dunno if Aldern could by chance happen upon a scroll of create undead ? Then they could face her again as an enemy but wearing the clothes of his deceased wife.

More info on group:
There are no female characters in the group, so Aldern latched onto a fighter who showed the most worth in the goblin raid. The surviving characters have not looted his body, and are properly burying the body. They are actually planning on giving Aldern the deceased players lance, as Aldern was delighted at its effectiveness at killing boars.
I think having Aldern dig up the body would be great, he can perhaps even take the characters clothes and wear them during the confrontation with the players.

Okay, so the fighter died. Then the obvious target (in my opinion) should be the healer of the group. They didn't keep him alive, so they are now the target of his undead fueled hatred. Actually works in quiet nice into the first half of the adventure.

oh gosh, a few cool images spring to mind here - does aldern dig her up, leave mementoes, blame a pc? Or does he transfer his love to another PC who was, after all - her closest friend...oh you could have a lot of unpleasantness with this one...
Oh, you have GOT to have this PC
And make it about vengeance.

Actually, the healer of the group (a favoured soul) died as well.
No, not as a ghoul... just have their body propped up at his table, sharing a drink with him. That could be creepy enough.
This is the best idea I think I have ever heard. Ever. Since two pc's died, I think the fighter he envied is going to be at the table with a drink, and the favoured soul might end up as one of his ghouls, as roguerouge suggested.

A little off topic,
Still in the pre-campaign stage, and I am thinking of trading out Aldan for one of his sisters, since my group is all male and I would like the lust option. It would be interesting to run it as written whith his lustfull eye falling one of my male players! Has anyone tried either of these options?

Is it possible for a creature to become a ghoul once its died?
As I understand it you have to be alive and catch ghoul fever to become a ghoul and then die (hence the reason I suggested a plain zombie earlier.)
create undead by a certain level caster will create a ghoul from a corpse.

Ghoul fever isn't contagious to corpses, but part of the point is that there's this weird fungus whose properties aren't completely understood beyond the fact that they turned Aldern into a dread ghast. You could do a lot with that.

Good point, about the fungus and the level of spell casting required thanks.
Walter;
In my campaign I've had Aldern fall for one of the (all male) group. This came about because I REALLY liked the spurned lover approach over all the other options and before Aldern was introduced, the characters found out about the relationship between Jasper and Cyrdak (sp?). They started wondering how many others where gay and then the Goblins showed up.....
This turned out even handier than expected as prior to the boar hunt they heard a rumour of him killing his wife. Now, due to the new "relationship" they believed Aldern when he denied even ever being married! This was enough to shake off Aldern after the boar hunt so that he could get on to the mansion and allow the group to carry out the rest of their adventure. (That is untill they meet again.....)

I don't think that they would see anything with see invisibility, until the haunt was actively manifested. Detect Evil and the like just let you know there is some evil force in that room, or in that area. See Invisibilty you can see on the ethereal(so you can see ghosts) but while the haunt is just waiting to be sprung I don't think there would be anything visual to spot.

I am about to start the Skinsaw Murders as well and am facing the same problem. Heck only one of the original "Hero's of Sandpoint" has survived. However I selected Alderns Obsession to be the Female Elven Ranger in the party who died at the hands of the Goblin Chieftain.
I plan to have Aldern dig up the corpse or steal it before it is buried, after I learn what the party plans to do with the corpse. I'm going to mix Alderns emotions with the one surviving party member in Wrath for letting his obsession die, and lust for "thinking" that parts of his Obsession transferred over to the remaining party member.
I figure this way I can have the notes going to the remaining party member and the deceased obsession.
In the final confrontation with Aldern I plan to have the deceased obsession in one of Iesha's dresses sitting in the chair and Aldern talking to her, "Soon my love, the one you have brushed on will be here. Soon." PC's enter, Aldern assumes the guise of the surviving party member and acts out the obsession wanting to wrench out the "parts" of his Obsession's soul that are "supposedly" trapped in the surviving party member.
At least that's my plan.
