Fresh from the forge...

The Warforged

By now you all should know I'm not a big poster, and even if I have an opinion I rarely speak up, but this...this...yeah it's ugly! Out of all the artwork so far(the satyr-looking-gnome, the he-she efrett) this by far the worst.

I think of what we've seen so far, I like the Githyanki and the Balor the best, with a bronze for the Dark One, based on concept and general look, but goes a little too far in the "evil jester" direction to be a total win.

I see that with 14 pictures up, only two artists, Arnie Swekel and Michael Komarck did more than one picture. I wonder if any of it is intended for sources other than the core books.

gods that warforged is now a 24th century robot ugly ugly picture

Out of the current pictures I would rand them as follows

1.Balor; I think it gets top spot not only for being a good piece, but it also has a classic feel to it.
2.The Gith; both are awesome and I've been a fan of the githzerai and githyanki since I started.
3.Gibbering Orb; I think the freakyness is what I like the best.
4.The Dark One; I can't name it, but there's just something I like.
5.Big T; Really at this point the art wasn't having moving me at all. T gets this spot because I liked it more than the others below it. I just have a hard seeing this pic and not hearing [url=Godzilla Music Video
]Blue Oyster Cult[/url] in the back of my mind.
6.Cambions;So really whats the differance between these, and lets say normal half-fiend or even tieflings.
7.Gnome;Grrr, I'm a monster:(
8.Angel;Not a fan.
9.Rakshasa;I want to like this, I did, but the art was blech.
10.Devils;Barely beat out the Blood Fiend, but I think had alot to do with the Ice devil and Imps art.
11.Blood Fiend;Don't ya just want to hug'em.
12.Efreet; Art wasn't that great, especially the he-she there.
13.Warforged; Curse you art gods! I mean when I started gaming again I got Eberron. And I for one was never disappointed with the art in my Eberron books. But this...YESH! It must have produced in a reject forge, hidden somewhere deep in the bowels of Sharn (Merrix, I'm looking at you)

Uh? The warforged doesn't seem much different from the original version. The only significant change is the eyes; the new warforged has "visor-like" eye sockets. I imagin that the red lights disappear when the warforged dies. That seems cool to me.

I agree ... the Warforged art isn't too great. Who drew that one again?

Lazaro,

It may interest you, but a Cambion IS a half-fiend ... from before they were called half-fiends, in the old 2E (and I assume 1E?) days. 3E dropped them (and Alu-Fiends, another half-fiend) for the generic template, but it seems they are returning in 4E?

Cheers! :)

Coming at it completely as a newb regarding Eberron - the warforged looks like every other warforged pic that I've seen before. I thought it was pretty decent artwork.

The White Dragon
White dragons are highly adaptable but prefer to dwell in cold places such as glacial rifts, cold mountain peaks, and icy caves linked to the Elemental Chaos.

sorry guys the warforged pic is indeed bad. some pics on here are good but that looks really bad kinda like a cheap school project from folks who where drunk and in dime light when they saw a warfoged the 3e art for it is miles above that sad try at making it super awesome cool.

oh and the white dragon isn't loading for me

I like this one.

It's time! Ladies and gentle, I bring you a beast like no other. It took three of my bravest men, rest their souls, to bring this monster to you today. I give you...

The Worg
This enormous, evil relative of the wolf savors the taste of humanoid flesh and likes to stalk people over other prey.

Nice to see the Worg really look like something the Goblins would create.

Disturbing. I like it.

Actually, UDON (yes, the UDON studios) did two of the pieces. THe Bloodfiend (which I liked) and the Efreet (which I didn't)

Well-executed but not really liking.

I REALLY don't like the Worg... it looks like an Aberration, not at all how I imagine a Worg looking. Maybe it's just because, to me, Tolkien invented worgs and they were clearly big nasty wolves with red eyes.... but this seems all sorts of wrong.

I'm pretty sure that the picture is for the Guulvorg variant that was in MM5. (take a look in the MM5 gallery on WOTC's site)

The only question is Did the Guulvorg variant became the default worg in the MM or does the worg entry have 2 stats, one for the normal worg and one for the variant...

I can see arguments for both. The latter option would follow the other examples we've seen of monsters that have more than 1 statblock per entry depicting different "level" monsters of that species. While given the relatively ease on the fly levelling modification of monsters, one could argue one doesn't NEED the regular worg with the wolf in the MM

The club tail make me think of the Catoblepas first, but after looking at the MM5 gallery the Guulvorg is a solid match.

while it looks cool THAT IS NO WORG. Also how would ya ride it with back spikes and all.....poor poor demaned goblins

Logan Bonner confirmed that its a guulvorg from MMV, and that the more traditional wolf-like worg would also be in the MM.

That's a Worg?!? Looks more like a Hellhound or those Scaled Wolf things from Everquest to me.

The Kruthik
Kruthiks burrow through the earth, riddling the Underdark with tunnels. They hunt in packs and nest in sprawling subterranean warrens.

They look like a mix of Starcraft zherglings with Terminator machines.

That translates to: they are cool.

This might be some progress. We could move on from the "4e is Warcraft" posts to "4e is Starcraft" posts. Now, if only Wizards could give us Protoss for the next art sample...

Look in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, NO IT'S....

The Manticore
A manticore flings iron spikes from its tail. Irritable and mean, it attacks without provocation and does not negotiate with prey

I miss the 3.5 Manitcore, actually had its own look.

This manticore has a bit of a Napoleon Dynamite feel to me, I'm afraid.

not feeling the manticore...kinda looks like a 80's b-movie poster really

At this point I wouldn't be suprised if a magic-using Liger makes it into the 4E Monster Manual.

Feed me Seymore, feed me!

The Shambling Mound
This shambling carnivore catches prey with its thick, ropelike arms and traps it in the mucky mass of its body, where countless rootlets bore into the victim.

Mmm, Swamp Thing needs a haircut! ;)

Liberty's Edge

That geranium got biiiiiig.

Not bad, but way does it have teeth?

Hey, where's Lazaro? I got used to him posting the new ones as soon as they appear. I think tonight's is ripe for a funny caption.

Sorry was watching a special on Japan.

Where there's a whip, there's a way

The Orcs
Orcs worship Gruumsh, the one-eyes god of slaughter, and are savage, bloodthirsty marauders

Gotta admit, other than need a serious dental plan, I like the art for the orcs.

Humm tusks are a wee bit large but really nice look

Liberty's Edge

AAAHH! The pigs are rebelling! The pigs are rebelling! Rally the cows and chickens!

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

Cambions, remind me of fey'ri. That's a good thing in my book.

Gibbering Orb is disturbing. I don't know if tibetan overchanting or just a collection of whispers would be a better effect.

Bloodfiend is kind of meh.

Devils are so so.

Tarrasque still looks big and scary. Though I'd prefer it to fly somehow.

Efreete, meh, but the one on the left annoys me for some reason

Gith rock!

Rakshasa, looks like a starving gnoll to me

Gnomes. What did you do to anger Wizards so?

Angel Looks more demonic to me. I mean Angels should have to say "Fear not!" but that's just wrong.

Balor is cool, I'll admit that.

Dark one. looks like a goblin.

Worg, Ugh is more like it.

Whit Dragon, ok, nothing new.

I like the Kruthik, pity they aren't OGL.

Classic Manticore is back baby!

Shamling mound, meh Looks like a Moander special.

Hmm, like the orcs.

The Warforged looks, well, less organic, and more, well mechanic. The legs don't look canted right

I like most of them, so I'll just list the ones I didnt like.
The Efreeti looks to flat, fake, and out of proportion. That whole pic needs to be redone completely. The fire looks really bad. I dont like the Gnome's hair. Finally, the Orc picture just looks too crowded, and the colors seem to clash a bit. I dont really know how else to describe it. I think overall a darker color scheme would suit it better.
The rest of the pictures range from average (Cambion, Blood Fiend, and Warforged) to good or better (both Gith pics, Tarrasque, and Dark One).

The Earth Giant
Creatures of stone and rock, earth giants are mean, uncouth, territorial monsters that often enslave smaller, weaker creatures.

Hmm, looks just like the thing they were calling the earth titan in the minis section. I like.

I gotta admit, the elemental/primordial giant thing is an intriguing concept. Very Greek.

As for the picture itself, it reminds me of the Heartless Giant episode of The Storyteller...

Spoiler:
...speciffically the end where the giant dies and becomes a hill.

We have a pic of a female hill giant! And it doesn't look that bad... specially when compared to some efreeti girl...

The Fire Giants
Self-proclaimed lords of flame, fire giants are militaristic tyrants who enjoy testing their mettle against formidable adversaries.

So far the giants and titans are easily winning me over. Those are really, REALLY good pics.
