Ally looks at you with a twinkle in her eye. If you get within 100 yards of the 'end, I'll know.... might not want to get much closer that that with your friend's stunt with the cage though... you don't get to work for the king of spiders without noticing things..

"Stunt with the cage? It'd serve Devargo right for the stunt with our drinks.

"Thanks for the warning. I'll try to get you what you need soon."

Elizabeth spends the trip back to Kroft in silence, keeping an eye out and subconsciously patting the bag of coins under her dress with pleasure.

You head back to Citadel Volshyenek (the guard barracks, M5 on the map in the player’s guide) to speak to Kroft again and give her the papers. You travel over the main bridge from Old Korvosa through North Point, and down Harborview Boulevard South. It appears that the guard is finally making headway on clearing the riots... the circle is almost empty of rubble, and no riouters can be seen in the immediate area. Upon reaching Eodred’s Circle (M4) you hear a screeching, and from the grey sky above you drops a good thirty to forty imps. They begin pulling the hair and general mayhem of those standing outside the shops of the circle.

Branahm heard some snickering from one of the imps just before they dived. He can act in the surprise round.

The imps don't seem to be attacking, just causing mischief. One heads for Anju, another for Arius, gnashing teeth and working similar to dogs herding sheep together.

Branahm calls loudly, "Arius, Anju, imps above!"

He chants a brief incantation and touches one of his companions.

If he is within touch range or 5' step/touch range of either Arius or Anju, he'll invoke a Protection from Evil. If both Arius and Anju are within touch range, he'll cast the spell on Arius. If neither Arius nor Anju is within range, he'll cast it on Keth, Liz, or himself in descending order of preference. Sorry, Tikaani.

Branahm doesn't know if these imps count as summoned monsters, but is hoping so. If they're ex-familiars, I doubt it, but defer to Cap.

Intit order:
Branahm
Liz,
Keth,
Arius,
Imps

Ifigred you were walking normally so wit a 5 ft step Branahm could have reached anyone in the party

The imps dive and cackle... Two of them pick one woman up by her hair. another one put his tail through a wooden sign advertising toy Psydodragons. The two which act as herders of the party are joined by more, which encircle the rest of the open space, gathering the people to the center and picking on the ones they deem too slow.

Branahm says, "Come on!" He rushes toward the woman being attacked by the two imps, drawing his warhammer as he runs. He barrels into one of the imps with his shield.

Branahm charges one of the imps and bull rushes it, attempting to shove it away from the woman. His CMB is +5 (+1 L2, +2 Str, +2 charge bonus for bull rush), and I think that the imp takes a size penalty.

1d20+5=14

Branahm won't move with the imp, but will stand next to the woman. By the way, I'm assuming that Branahm has his holy symbol on a chain around his neck or something equivalent so he can release it without dropping it. If that's not an option, he'll keep it out rather than dropping it or drawing his weapon.

"I don't know much about their weaknesses. I was expelled from the Academae before the upper-division classes on summoning." i.e., Arius has no Knowledge: Planes yet.

Arius looks distracted for a moment, but then smiles. "The pseudodragon that we helped is returning the favor."

He shouts, "Not a waste at all. We are happy to provide assistance, especially against vermin." He fires off a few Magic Missiles from the wand at any imps who seem to have the upper hand over their pseudodragon adversaries or who are attacking people on the ground.

Arius will fire off up to five Magic Missile spells from his wand, then re-evaluate the situation. It's a very modest price for building more goodwill with the pseudodragons.

Branahm helps the woman get away from the now-preoccupied imps. He brings her over to his companions before checking to confirm that she's uninjured.

The sky battle is over quickly, as more and more Psydeuodragons pile onto the 30 imps. You notice a meatallic gleam on the claws of the dragons actually attacking, the others are just grappling the imps and keeping them from controlling the situation.

No other events happen on the way to Citadel Volshyenek. Field Marshal Cressida Kroft looks over the letters, blushing a bit as she does. She passes them to a clerk and awards you an extra 500 GP for your speedy work. She tells you that she doesn’t currently have any work for you, but asks you to leave an address that she could contact you it would be appriciated

you have time to shop here if needed- We can do that in the OOC thread -the experience from turning in the papers is actually what puts you over to 3rd lvl (i did the math over today)

As you are shopping (or doing whatever you do in the downtime), you begin to hear rumors that a painter named Trina may have been the one to murder the king! The Mobs form again, this time not yelling about the queen's unfairness, but searching for this supposed assassin. As the day closes and night begins, a breathless guard comes to the harrow shop, alerting you that the field marshal herself is on her way to you. Kroft arrives momentarily, and stations some guards outside the shop while she talks to you: “You’ve doubtless heard the stories that the king’s killer has been named. Yet there’s something more going on here, I’m afraid. Queen Ileosa could have quietly had this Trinia Sabor arrested at any time, yet the way in which she revealed the information to the city seems to me like she wants the riots to come back. Certainly, with the mob and the Hellknights out on the street, the girl doesn’t stand a chance at a trial—they’ll lynch her the moment they find her. And even if she did kill the king, mob justice isn’t the way. Worse, if she’s innocent, the real killer can use this distraction to throw us off the trail forever. “Before Trinia is executed, we need to be absolutely sure she did this thing. And that means we need to catch her before the mob. We know where she lives—a flat in Midland at 42 Moon Street—but soon, so will the mob. The Hellknights don’t seem to care as much about catching her as they do about containing the mob—something about the “order of law” makes it a greater priority for them to contain than a possible assassin. I can’t say I disagree completely, but the problem is, the Hellknights are only making it worse. The mob’s covering most of Midland now, and Trinia’s flat is near the middle of the mess. I’ve got all available guards at work keeping things from getting any worse—and if I were to send them into Midland, they’d trigger a riot. “I’m sure you can see where this is going. I need you to get into Midland, find Trinia, and bring her back to me so we can deliver her, safe and sound, to somewhere where she can be interrogated—preferably with magic, so we can be absolutely sure about her role in Eodred’s death. Get in there, catch her, and get out without letting the mob get its hands on her. I’ll have agents and officers nearby. If you can get her to one of them, we’ll be in the clear. Any questions?”

Before he leaves to shop, Branahm asks the Field Marshal about any clemency that is available for Ally. If Kroft seems amenable to a deal, Branahm, Arius, and anyone who wants to join them will make their way down to Eel's End to pull Ally out of there.

He'll also give some of his reward money to the church, preferably to any ministry work directed toward helping the victims of the riots.

As for the new mission, Branahm responds:

"We'll need a description of this woman. Do you know which path to her flat is most likely to be clear?"

Branahm listens carefully to Kroft's response, trying to gauge her loyalty to the Queen.

Sense Motive:

1d20+10=11

Thanks to his penetrating insight, Branahm is convinced that she either is or is not distrustful of the Queen.

Pic of Trina Trinia Sabor is a young artist who painted a portrait of the king not half a month before his death. Eodred’s chamberlain secured the girl’s services, hoping that regular visits from would improve his health and spirits. Trinia spent hours in private audience with the monarch. As to a clear path to her flat, we don't think that the crowds have gotten wind of her location yet, but that could change at any moment. She promises you a reward of 1,000 gp if you can deliver Trinia safe and sound to a member of the Guard and points out that every minute you delay is one more minute for the mob in Midland to grow. Kroft is obviously nervous, but remains tight lipped over her personal feelings about the queen's intentions. She also tells Branahm that she will look into Ally's case while you are gone and see what the girl's "issue" is.

"We'll bring Trina back, Field Marshal. Thank you for your willingness to hear Ally's case."

Non-Secret, but Boring Equipment Shopping:

Spoiler:
Branahm will use some of the reward money to buy a healer's kit, a couple vials of antitoxin, a potion of Cure Light Wounds, and a silver holy symbol.

Entering Midland is relatively easy, you need to take detours to avoid crowds of angry mobs or Order of the Nail patrols every now and then. When you arrive at the tenement in which Trinia is said to live, you find the place in a densely built section of the city, a place where, at ground level, direct sunlight is a rarity. Above, jury-rigged catwalks, overhanging roofs, lines of laundry, and homemade bridges of rope and boards create a cluttered tangle, a multi-level mess of gutters, upper floors, and rooftops. This is the slum above—a place known as the Shingles.Trinia’s home is in an old tenement, three floors high and containing two dozen flats, many of which are homes to artists, singers, students of the university, and other craftsmen. (Links are to information most natives will know from the wiki)

"We should check the building exits in case Trinia tries to duck out. Liz, perhaps you could ask which apartment that she lives in."

Arius and Branahm can Aid Another if you'd like the assistance, Ms. Diplomacy.

I predict that we'll end this encounter chasing Trinia over the rooftops, pursued by Hellknights and an angry mob in the streets below.

Elizabeth has been holed up in her apartment for the duration of the down-time. When she finally rejoins the group at Zellara's, the more observant of you will notice that Caress seems to have an extremely pale blue glow about the blade.
Upon receiving Kroft's directive and agreeing to the terms, she quickly pulls her body suit from her travel bag and dons it, pulling the blue bodice from her dress on over the top and making sure that her cleavage is amply displayed. She checks her gear and follows the others to the location of Trinia's residence. She knocks on the first door available in the building and enquires within as to the whereabouts of Trinia's apartment.
Diplomacy Check. (1d20+10=11) *sigh* nice to know IC hasn't abandoned the notion of giving me two 1's for my last two rolls... :(

An older woman and a child come to the door when you knock, asking what you want. The child runs down the hall when you ask your question, and the old woman looks at you suspiciously...What would you want with our nice young painter, hmm? She sighs and tells you Her flat is on the third floor

Dark Archive

Female Human Wizard (Conjuror) 1 Rogue 2

"Thank you madam."

Elizabeth moves gracefully up the stairs first, the others trailing behind. She reaches the first floor and stops, looking around for possible escape routes and traps at Trinia's door.
Perception Check. (1d20+7=25)
Once she is certain that the area is clear and she has an escape route planned should something bad occur, she knocks on the door.

The first floor looks like a normal hallway, with three people in it who seem to be writing a play or music of some sort. it is a long hallway with 4 doors on either side. There are no stairs on the other side, just a window. 2nd and third floors are the same, you come across the boy and a few of his friends coming down the stairs between the second and third floors, thir third floor hallway is completely empty. Trina's flat is the third floor according to the old woman.

"Let's hurry. I think that the kid was a lookout."

If Trinia doesn't respond quickly to the knock, let's open the door. If it's locked, I suggest that Liz takes a crack with Open Lock, and if that doesn't work after one attempt, Arius will use his Knock scroll, which he will ready while Liz tries the lock the first time.

When no one responds to the knock, Branahm says, "Let's go in."

He pushes open the door with enough force to snap loose the interior latch, and he steps into the room.

1d20+4=24

Branahm's new feat pays an immediate dividend. I don't have his spell selection at hand, but if Branahm has Hold Person, he will move one card and cast it on her. Otherwise, he will try to reach her and restrain her.
