Side Quests

Rise of the Runelords

What side quests have people added between Burnt Offerings and Skinsaw Murders?

I'm having Daviren Hosk (owner of Goblin Squash stables) give a quest to the PCs when they come to grab mounts for the boar hunt with Aldern. After the PCs notice all the ears and are treated to a glimpse of the pickled warchief Wartus, Daviren's going to offer them a free horse for every goblin hero head they bring back.

As written, the PCs should find Ripnugget and Bruthazmus over the course of BO, and possibly Koruvus. Since you can't quite count on Koruvus, I'll give away the location of the other two goblin heroes when Shalelu comes into town.

So far, I statted up a Vorka (Cleric 5 with Ravenous Template from the Advanced Bestiary). While the party's trudging through Brinestump marsh, they'll run across old Megus (Green Hag with the Swamp Lord template from the AB). I may throw in a couple other encounters, but these are ones I'm sure will be the most interesting.

In between Burnt Offerings and The Skinsaw Murders, I ran a side trek dealing with the PC Barbarian's aristocratic cousin in Magnimar. I based it off of the special one-shot manga "Embalming: Corpse and Bride" which can be found in Buso Renkin #10.

Basically, the young lady's legs were stolen (cut off with cursed knives, so the wounds can't simply be healed) by an as yet unknown necromancer. The PCs got to know Magnimar by hunting down the villian... They had to buy the information on his whereabouts from the Scarnetti's, and end the end he got away.

In the necromancer's lair, the party found out why the legs were taken -- as parts to construct a pleasure golem! The PCs scraped up enough money to pay for a regenerate spell for the poor cousin, but then found out that due to the magic of the golem-building process, new legs cannot be grown until the old ones are destroyed (lead in to another side trek when I need one).

The players enjoyed it quite a bit.

And since they skipped the whole underbridge section at the end of Skinsaw, I'm running another side trek tomorrow...

The Scarnetti's gave up the necromancer's location only after the PCs swore to shut down the Pixie's Kitten in Sandpoint, so that's what they'll be up to (with sczarni meddling not withstanding)... once they put down a harem of reefclaws (a very cool new monster described in Edge of Anarchy) that have disrupted fishing!

I have a couple lined up, during the boar hunt, which I moved to Mosswood, the party will stumble upon some ruins, with some small creatures, (giant rats, stinger monkeys, a bugbear and a ghoul.)

Also, IMC, the Kaijitsu family have been using goblins to work the limestone quarries in the Devil's Platter (unknown to locals), well the goblings stumbled upon an abandoned dwarven gold mine and hit upon a small vein of gold. They have then been sending the gold to the Kaijitsu's, in exchange for high quality weapons and armor, (which they then trade to the other goblin tribes). Sometime after the Glassworks, the party will find enough clues to lead them to the mines and another battle with goblins.

Later still, Pendleton, a small town I placed on the Thistle River, just north of Mosswood will be attacked by the Mosswood Goblins, and many captives will be taken. PCs following the trail will return to the ruins found earlier, this time a large force of goblins will be there, using the captive townfolk to excavate something buried in the ruins, (Perhaps another Runewell).

Just out of curiosity, why is there a need for sidequests after Burnt Offerings? Is there a risk of players not meeting enough of the adventure to make a level appropriate to Skinsaw?

Everything to me seems linear enough to lead them from one encounter to the next and event the "optional" dungeon has a ready-made hook for players who miss it the first time as the 'spawn start bubbling up into the town.

What are your players missing that puts them behind the curve for Skinsaw?

I find the optional adventures just add alot more to the game. Having the players get to know the various NPCs for various reasons adn not just those they want to purchase stuff from. The horse guy is a kewl one as is the whole goblins mining works well in my game. I have used the Haunted Forest adventure by Paizo as a side adventure and that has worked well. Another person posted about that and they have some interesting ideas as well to add.

In my case, it's not that the players missed anything, it's that several players went missing (silly people getting married and moving to Oklahoma).

So the remaining few needed a touch more XP before going into the next adventure.

Why i want to add side treaks is because i want to stretch ROTRL to 1 through 20 So i want to add in things

In my case, I need to add some extra encounters because I'm not using 3E as my system, so XPs are a bit harder to come by and it takes more to level up. I want the PCs to be at least 2nd level before they attempt Thistletop, and I'm a little worried about 1st level PC in the Catacombs of Wrath.

I'm trying to stretch ROTL out a few more levels, so I've added some subplots (many stolen from these boards- Thanks!) My group has a history of not really caring about anything subtle, just diving into the dungeons, So I'm trying for more "buy-in" earlier, hence my need for side quests
