Items of the Gods

3.5/d20/OGL

A new and extremely powerful being has arrived into my campaign world. This god is threatening/killing the home town pantheon, and bring his worshipers in to subjugate the world’s people.

The home town gods are too fearful or too weak to stop this “over-god”. So as usual the gods are sending to there followers to do something extremely dangerous in hopes of saving the divine butts.

I will eventually have my players collecting items that were once belongings/pieces of mysterious gods. These gods left for some unknown reason, but did leave a few remnants of their former existence. The players will learn that this “over-god” had destroyed the world before and the gods who ruled it eons ago were destroyed or ran. However, a few did leave objects to help if this “over-god” should ever return.

This is a basic outline of the story I’m planning to weave. I still have to work out some kinks.

What I’m looking for help on is the Items that these mysterious gods left behind. I’m using real world mythologies for these items. I have a few ideas, but I’m looking for more.

Just a few ideas: The Eye of Odin, Mjolnir, Athena's Aegis, The Hand of Tyr

I would like some from all the major areas of mythos ie: Norse, Greek/Roman, Celtic, Egyptian. I don’t care if they are weapons, items, body parts, random objects.

All help is really appreciated

The Exchange

Gram, the sword that, in Norse mythology, Sigurd used to slay the dragon Fafnir.
Andvarinaut ("Andvari's Gift"), a magical ring capable of producing gold.
Gungnir, Odin's javelin that was said to always hit it's mark.
Caladbolg, a two-handed sword that made a circle like an arc of rainbow when swung, and to have the power to slice the tops off hills and take out several men.

Wikipedia is a wonderful thing.

Perhaps the Over-god may have been originally released from a powerful artifact himself, a Pandora’s box, and the heroes have to re-trap him in it once again.

Here are a few more,

Eye of Horus (Egyptian);a jewel which allowed the viewer to see into the future.

Ankh of Ra (Egyptian); Power to resurrect the dead and fallen

Silver Hand of Nuada (celtic); The fabuously forged prosthetic hand of the god, which allowed anything he attempted to lift to become weightless.

Necronomicon (Cthulu);Nuff said, self explanatory

Sword of Zues (Greek); Short sword or gladius with vorpal or sharpness powers and the ability to call storms/lightning bolts

Heart of Aphrodite (Greek); Caused men/women to fall in love within the presence of the heart. Also carried the curse of scorn by others who would've loved you.

Spear of Ares(Greek); Seeking spear with battle rage/lust powers and has the wounding ability when it strikes

Lock of hair from Bes (Egyptian); The cut ponytail or topknot of the god of luck. Said to give incredible powers of luck to the holder.

Sif's golden hair (Norse); Finely forged golden hair crafted by dwarves for Loki to give as a gift to Sif, Thor's wife. In repayment for shaving her own divine hair....Said to regrow and act in all ways as normal hair, made of the finest gold.

Hopefully these will help you out. Also, try your local library's mythology section. Also, the Man, Myth, and Magic Timelife series has tons of great ideas concerning mythology.

Though there is a lot of good ideas above, I would also suggest that possibly the items were not fancy in any way.

An example:
The hammer of the forge god may be of the up most quality but it is only apparent from up close as it is so scarred from millions of uses and embedded with grime.

The Exchange

Or maybe:
A practical, unadorned longsword in a beaten and worn sheath. Is really an intelligent weapon once wielded by a paladin of one of the fallen gods. Can only communicate empathically, unless you want it to help them with whatever knowledge it has. Give it whatever powers you want it to have that will fit in context

Here's one that's roughly based on a Planescape campaign my brother ran.

Sickle of the Moon
A razor-sharp piece of the crescent moon used to castrate both Uranus and Kronos when they were overthrown. Hidden away by Zeus in the screaming tunnels of Pandemonium, it has a wicked edge that even the gods fear.

She said castrate.

I'm scared. Someone hold me.

Balor's eye (Celtic)- The poisoned eye of the ancient king of the Fomorians (giants), knocked out of his head by Lugh. Must be carried in a cart and requires four strong people to lift. When uncovered, all living creatures in a 90-degree arc (unless invisible or completely behind cover) are slain.

Fragarach (Celtic)- "The Answerer," greatsword (or large bastard sword, if you wish) used by Lugh. Can automatically strike any opponent who attacks it's wielder, in addition to normal attacks.

Gleipnir (Norse)- The magical ribbon used to bind the great wolf Fenrir. Once tied around a being, it cannot be broken, cut, escaped, or untied by anything except during an earthquake.

The Hand and Eye of Vecna. I'm just sayin'.

Don't forget the Hades' Helm of Darkness.
