One of my favorite bumper stickers:

Last time religion and the government worked together, it was called the dark ages.

I'm sticking with that sentiment.

What she said.

Before I got a new car that I didn't want people messing with, I had that bumper sticker on my car. And yes, people messed with my car on a regular basis. Some of the more "benevolent" folks just covered the sticker, or taped flyers for one church or another over it. A few timers, more aggressive folks left nasty notes. No one went as far as doing actual damage to my car, but frankly I think that was only a matter of time.

The potential amusement I stood to derive from the hypocrisy of people violating the tenets of their religion by damaging my car stopped being worth it when I ditched my junker last year.

I'm sure Sen. Clinton meant that it was scurrilous to suggest Obama follows Islam when he says he is something else; that is to say, scandalous to suggest he would lie about his religious convictions, not that being Muslim was scandalous.

I agree. I wonder if the question itsself wasn't a bit loaded.

I can see that. That isn't how I saw it at the time, but I can see where that might have been what she meant.

And, yes -- I agree that the question was more than a bit loaded.

Y'know what I wish I could see? Obama and Reagan square off for a debate. That'd be something.

Something my grandmother told me once, after a lifetime of not knowing that she was even religious. "Of course I believe in God, but that's my business. Anyone who tells you what to believe isn't religious, they just like bossing people around, or they want your money."

Heh. Go grandma!

If only there were more people who felt that way...Live and let live seems like a pretty good motto.

It is a good motto, but the problem is that there are people out there who are convinced that god himself instructs them (either through their religious leaders, or through a religious text) to make sure that everybody else worships the way they do.

You can't argue (as in "have a debate") against that sort of conviction.

What was awesome? If its that whole colonize the moon thing, we can have colonists there in ten years, and an underground city for ten million within fifty but it would be heavily one way...and the tourists would be confined to the Spaceport, not the underground city being mined out of the heart of the moon.
Yeah, the city at the center is for Moonboys only. Segregation will be legal on the moon, along with drugs, polygamy and prostitution. Anything goes on the moon (except humans integrating with Moonboys).

Tourists will have to conduct their "giggle and squeak parties" (Helium gas and nitrous oxide gas sniffing) in the lunar spaceport. We cant have you swanning about in the subterranean dome villages of permanent colonists...did i tell you...if you dig a cavern, build a perspect dome roof, put water above it, and expose the water to space from the surface it freezes to form a Dome protective layer while letting in some light.

Reagan had this aura--he was a 18 CHA with a +18 modifier. I remember listening to him in '83 and '84 with my folks, and everyone was hypnotized. He could have asked my family to cook me up and feed me to the chickens, and I think they would have listened...

I know. And he had that ability to ad-lib..."are you better off than you were four years ago?"

"I knew Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Thomas Jefferson."

The thing I remember most about Reagan was him sitting at a table bloating himself with grapes while the migrant workers were on strike for better conditions. That left a lasting impression on me.
