Okay, I'm back.
I just started running The Skinsaw Murders for my group, and we're having a great time with it. After the PCs saw the first scarecrow thrashing around on it's post, they quickly dispatched it and discovered that it was a disguised ghoul. One of the players said, "Wait a minute... who wrote this?" I told him that Richard Pett was the author and asked why he wanted to know. His response was something to the effect of "I just wanted to make sure it wasn't Nick Logue. That guy would probably put some regular people up there just to mess with us."
I put on the best poker face of my DMing career and, a few minutes later, the PCs had slain poor Lettie Guffmin. They then moved more cautiously, making spot checks (DC 10 per 5 feet) to try and determine whether the scarecrows were ghouls or humans. They freed Horran, but sent him home with their assurances that they would send his wife after him if they found her. A short metagaming conversation took place in which they agreed that they could make up anything they wanted and nobody would know the difference. Yeah. Nobody but the DM keeping track of their sins. Muahahaha! Next session will involve a little side quest to give them the opportunity to admit their horrible (but honest) mistake or commit to a lie.
Congrats, Pett, on springing an excellent, memorable trap on my players. You are officially tied with Logue as the author to fear.

Classic, I can't wait for my group to get to this point. We are only 3-4 sessions away by my calculations.
Let us know if they take the easy road and lie or come clean.
Wouldn't Horran make a fantastic replacement PC if one of the characters die?

This is going to be interesting.
Can we have some sort of contest? One starts with a mini-adventure seed, and the other has to one-up him. And then the first guy has to one-up him. And so on and so forth.
We'll have a live jury, and the first who gets them all to run out of the room screaming, or throwing up, or run out of the room throwing up and screaming, wins.

What I'd realy love to do is what the serial authors in the 30's used to do and come up with cliffhanger endings that seemed impossible to escape from and then pass the writing reins on. It would be fun to do a few chapters of a Pathfinder with Rouge and try to top each chapter in it as we go along. I'm not up for a gore fest as Logue would win hands down as he is a sickened and highly tainted individual.

I haven't seen any threads thus far, I must (regretfully?) observe hinting that James Jacobs had to massively edit Skinsaw to make it salable without warning stickers.
The delightful Mr Jacobs deserves huge credit for enhancing Skinsaw, and I think some warning stickers shoud be added for his own twistedness.

Amen to that, I was trying to explain to my group what he meant to the game and us long term gamers, a few of them have only been around since the the creation of 3.0. Best way i could sum it up was that none of us would be here in this room if it were not for his creativity. Two of my mates who are best buddies, would never of met and i would of lost contact with 3 of them from high school.
I wonder which outer plane he has chosen?
I would love to see your cliff hanger pass the chapter, I am a great admirer of both your works.

Nick, that'll just help him. He'll either return as some kind of blasphemous undead horror, or he'll become a vengeful specter after taking a glance around the bowels of the underworld to get a feel for it.
Lock them in with weaponry? These men are CREATIVE! Lock them in with a selection of tableware and marital aids...
They might emerge best friends.

I dont see what your problem is...I used this baby as the lead in for their first time. Having come back from escorting a grain shipment, They were overjoyed to find family members doing the scarecrow dance. As long as you describe to them the blood flowing down the blade of the sword, the whimpering of the dying, the brown hair slipping loose of the cloth mask, revealing the sister they just killed...I got to see a newbie Player puke from simple brutal description. I described his sister in great detail...his real sister and of course she sat and read a book listening on. After that the Skinsaw Murders have turned out to be a rollercoaster ride of horror...one realworld weakness after the next exploited to full effect.
You twist the knife enough and they can become really nasty.

Back to the original situation for a spell (just a swift one, I promise. I don't want to be known as an anti-hijacker):
I think them assuming (you know what assume means: It makes an ass of u and me) there are no living people there because one author wrote it and not the other is nasty metagaming!
I would let them have it if they didn't bother to check because of the author. Their characters don't know the name of their Fate. They should have checked.
I also say there should be 8 sins. Sloth, Pride, Lust, Wrath, Gluttony, Envy, Greed, and Metagaming.
In game terms, those characters found guilty of the Sin of metagaming will trigger all kinds of haunts, and every enemy will get the bane and spell bane abilities (extra +2 enhancement bonus for attacks, +2 DC for spells, +2d6 damage with weapons and spells) and all flat percentile rolls (stabilising, looking whether they impregnated a girl or got a veneral disease - would that be calistrian disease in Golarion?) are 10% less likely to go their way.
Of course, you don't have to use those. You could always opt to be nasty to them.

Honestly - this is one of the most exiting and engaging ideas I've seen in a long time, and I for one would happily gobble it up !
Maybe if not as a Paizo product it could be done over in Open Design with Mr. Baur ?
Maybe offered concurrently with the resurrection of another spin-off of the old Serials, the indomitable Dr. Jones ?
