Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

"I wouldn't drink that, roach. But thanks for doing so.", Altai mutters. He leans a little forward, watching the insect intently while hoping the nasty little bug will melt, internally combust, or do something equally interesting.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

The cockroach drinks for a good five minutes. It then skitters off, through a crack in the masonedwork of the wall.

Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

"Disappointing. I'm still not drinking that, though." Altai straightens up. "It seems we've found The Alchemist."

Does he have a knife sticking out of his chest or something like that?

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

No signs of foul play.

Male Human Paragon 3 /Evoker 6 (abjuration&enchantment barred) ---37,300XP

Ini Ezekeal Lo'geuy and Riese scans the room for any emanations de Magicka.
Detect Magic, looking for auras around the room.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

The blue liquid that the cockroach drank definitely is.

There's a few rulesy things I have to check on to make sure my answer is correct; I'll get back to you with a more thorough answer in a couple hours.

"Altai you should capture a bug and see what happens to it after drinking that stuff".

Male Human Cleric 4

Becton will give a check of the dead man to see if he notices any clear reasons for his physical expiration. Perhaps see if any objects he was holding, etc. become apparent.

Heal check (1d20+9=14)
Spot check (1d20+4=22)

Harvak wrote:

"Ah wonder if'n it's booze."

Stig looks at it thirstily.

"Fightin' them skellies was lots ay wark ye ken."

Riese wrote:

Detect Magic, looking for auras around the room.

Detect magic gives 4 potions (weak) two are blue, two are violet, on the table to the east.

The ring on the dead alchemist's hand is weak.

The blue stuff in the bowl is strong magic.

Becton further examines the corpse. He can see no sign of trauma. From the way he was sitting, it seems he just slumped and died there, out of the blue. The body is years and years old.
The alchemist held a pen in his right hand but dropped it. He was writing in the open journal on his desk.
There's also a spellbook close by.

Male Wild Elf Druid 16 (Shifter version, PHBII)

Ack! Thanks for saving that earlier post mr DM, seems ALL my posts today are getting oblivion-fied!

M Halfling Barbarian 10

"Is magic here?" Gittik shudders in superstitious dread.

Male Human Rogue 14

“Phew!” Beldan waves his hand in front of his nose, then looks around with interest. There could be a king’s ransom in this room and he’d never know it … who knows what those magical writings might be worth, or whether those bottles there contain valuable potions or old vinegar. Best leave this to the experts.

The rogue begins poking around the room, looking for anything that he does understand – gold, secret doors, that sort of thing.

Search:9+6 = 15

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Beldan finds no more doors, but he does find a pouch of 120 g.p.

Male Human Rogue 14

Sweet. Is anyone recording party loot?

Beldan Vale wrote:

I have a space on Stig's sheet where I record party loot that he is carrying. When we go back to town I will post it. I don't record anything that other people volunteer to carry. Right now he has 50 gp and some spices worth 100 or 150, can't remember, that he's carrying on behalf of the group.

Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

Altai helps himself to both books, carefully wrapping them in a blanket before putting them in his backpack. "We'll take a closer look at these when we get back to Saltmarsh. Meanwhile, we can put the saucer's content in here", he says, pulling out the glass bottle he had intended to use for ectoplasm.

Cool. I'll do the same sort of thing, 120gp going into Bel's group treasure list.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Just to let you know, Altai--there's 4 more books, in addition to those two you nabbed.

Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

"Oooh, look at those!" Altai picks up the extra bounty of books, only to realise that his weedy frame can't really support that much leather-bound learning. "Um, could someone carry these?"

Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

Just out of curiosity - is the dead guy all mummified and leathery, or does he look suspiciously freash? I don't want any funny Temporal stasis-type hibernation thing to blow up in our faces.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Naah, he essentially is a skeleton, with dried skin over it. Nothing odd about it.

Your classic lich look.

I love stoking paranoia in attempting to assuage it. ;)

I concentrate on the ring to try to determine the school of the aura, then the potions then the blue stuff that is by the guy who died 'out of the blue'.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

You can roll, or do you want me to?

Male Human Cleric 4

Did you also pick up the man's journal/book on the desk? That'd be my choice for study.
In any case - I'll be happy to try and pick up some books and place them in a sack for Altai. How much weight are we talking?

Also, Becton will also give the chalkboard the once over to see if he understands it any better. Spellcraft (1d20+3=22)

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

The books weigh some 2 lbs. each, so 8 lbs.

The stuff on the board--he was trying to amplify the effects of enlarge/reduce spells to an extreme degree using a blending of alchemy and spellwork. Trying to concentrate the dosages of potions, to amplify the effects of the magic somehow. Apparently, the chalk scrawlings point to a theory trying to attempt to "reverse engineer," if you will an extremely potent reduction potion from a successful....extremely potent enlargement potion.

the original module had the alchemist apparently transmuting base metals into gold; I didn't see a whole lot of stuff there I wanted to roll with--"let's ruin the economy of Greyhawk! Yay!!!

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Meh...Riese...the two blue potions and two purple potions--transmutation school.
The blue fluid that Altai bottled--transmutation.
The ring--abjuration.

Male Human Rogue 14

Beldan looks around for giant cockroaches.

Male Human Paragon 3 /Evoker 6 (abjuration&enchantment barred) ---37,300XP

The ring is probably a protective device. The potions and the blue goo is some type of dilution that work to alter the form in one way or the other. Could be many different things.
That's all I got...sorry guys, can't be more specific.

Male Human Cleric 4

OK.

"Altai, I can place those extra books in a sack I have. Did you peruse that journal - it may be worthwhile..."

"Looks like we've reached a dead-end; shall we return back to the bunk-room and see where to go from there?"

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Becton doesn't see any giant cockroaches.

In Florida, they had the flying kind that'd jump you like a dropbear.

Male Human Cleric 4

Think he means you, Bel!

In my experience - that would be from the Palmetto family - freaky buggers! :-o

Yea - they grow 'em big down here; must be all that swamp water ;-)

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

Shoot. I had a big goliath beetle on me in Panama. It kept hooking it's feet into my shirt. I had to pin all his other five arms and unhook his foot from my shirt to get him off of me.

Male Human Paragon 3 /Evoker 6 (abjuration&enchantment barred) ---37,300XP

Yeah, well I once stumbled into the slavering jaws of a lurking grue.

Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

Anything interesting in the journal?

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

The first few pages detail a rambling manifesto/mission statement; there are other worlds beyond this one; a thousand thousand suns dancing on the head of a pin;...but how to appreciate them? To visit them, to gaze upon unknown vistas?

Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

After skimming the first pages of the journal, Altai turns back to Becton. "You know, I might have to get back to you on that. So far, the author seems more than a little unbalanced. Of course, that's to be expected from a guy who spends all his time in a subterranean lair full of mercury fumes, guarded by giant skeletons. I'll need a day or so to make any sense of it, though."

Zippo. Or even better one of those pressurized butane lighters.

"Gud luck makin' any sens' o' anyt'ing dat ol' coot had anyt'ing to do wit!" Elgan grumps as he makes another round of the room. Obstenively looking for anything else of interest, but obviously just blowing off steam. Though he is a caster, and knows about potions and such, he is obviously growing irritated with the combination of claustrophobic spaces and details about super-potions that are far beyond his current understanding.

He does try to see where the cockroach went though. He knows that where you see one there are at least a hundred more. And if they were ALL drinking that 'powerful potion',...

Spiders-The harmless one's are okay. However the big evil ones give me the chills like your black widow or brown recluse. I don't know how people can live where these things are plentiful.

Harvak lights up a torch, looks around at everyone. "Hey like Stiggy said fire makes things move".

Male Human Rogue 14

I like big spiders. They keep the cochraoch population under control.

Male Human Wizard 17 (Conjuration specialist)

"You know, Harvak, lighting a torch in a room this full of dry paper and chemical fumes might not be the best idea. Just saying, is all."

Harvak quickly leaves the room. "Sorry guys".

Male Human Rogue 14

“Where to next folks – the other floor level door out of the bunk room?”

"Roory awooooooooo."
