You're reading way more into this than you should. I suspect that the designers call it 4.0 because it fits in the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 progression and for no other reason.I frankly wouldn't be surprised at all if the books don't even say "fourth edition" anywhere on them. I suspect very shortly WotC will refer to the game as "Dungeons & Dragons," without any sort of number qualifier whatsoever.
They almost seem to be behind schedule on 4.0. I do not think they even have the time to worry about later editions or iterations of the rules right now.
Since I word in a software company I tend to agree with Erik, Everything gets a .0 attached to it because when you talk about stuff versions like this it happens. So I don't think they are planning on a 4.5 anytime soon.
Can I also agree with Erik? 'Cause man I love doing things like that.
Seriously though, yes I agree.Edit: Yeah! new page!

There's a reason Hackmaster was popular. It may be seen by many as a parody, but it can't be denied that it's a very accurate parody of how many groups actually played.
I think the general opinion is that it nails the 'old-school, first-edition-feel' with great success.
More accurately, it kept the older rules alive, allowing groups TO play that way (many mistakenly believe it REQUIRES that type of play because that's what the comics show) or in any other manner they wished.
A great recipe for short-term success. Not sure what the next edition (due out in '09 or 2010) will feel like or allow though...Dale McCoy Jr Jon Brazer Enterprises |

You better be careful Sebastian. We might start thinking you have a sense of hunour.

You know I used to feel a real sense of community with other people who played dnd, I generally thought of them as smart, if geeky aquaintances that for the most part where more or less like me.
but it turns out im just some dirty MMOrpg worshipping FF playing Fiend who knows nothing about fantasy, does not like to read, am unimaginative and whenever i bring it up , I'm just flaming.
Furthermore me like eric and others am just a foos [notice the pop cultural placement of foo instead of fool, just again suggesting the levels of depavity, lack of imagination and grammar that I am guilty of] for ever believing wizards, especially if they say something like, we are trying to make a good game, or their was problems with the old system.
hate to tell you lads, but WotC isn't killing DnD, Its grognards.
But thats okay, it turns out that MMOrpgs, such as guild wars and WoW, computer games such as final fantasy, and other fantasy genre games such as NWN and others, as well as the illiterate unimaginative masses really don't give a rats ass about any of this, and sadly i must say that I am going to hang out with them, even if i occassionally do have to buy a [gasp] new product, or edition.

I'm so fatigued by this ongoing debate over 4th, I'm not entirely sure why I'm posting. I don't want to convert any body to my way of thinking. I don't want to tell people they're wrong for their decisions about 4th edition or 3rd edition. I don't want to argue the finer points of game design or why one system is better than another. I definitely don't want to insult anybody, nor do I want to be insulted by anyone.
I will say that the OP is probably right (though whether it will be called 4.5 is up in the air), and that it really doesn't matter. Wizards will eventually have to revise, or come out with a new edition. I understand why the grognards are posting as they do, I am a grognard. A thick beard if you will. And no, I'm not happy with the fluff changes, but to each his own. I'm sure individuals on the boards here wouldn't like some of the house rules that I, or people I play with use.
Most "grognards" beef is with the killing of the sacred cows, or what appears to be "video-gamy" conventions. Many of us would probably welcome many of the new mechanic changes. But WotC PR for 4th Edition has been lacking, and some what insulting in the past. Now anything that could be taken as a slight, whether it really is or not, becomes one.
I'm interested in 4th edition. I want 4th edition to be successful, for the good of the game. I don't intend to use 4th edition, though I've stated in the past if Paizo switches I may consider picking up the bare minimum to run their products. My concern about 4th edition, ultimately is whether or not those companies, whose products I greatly enjoy, will continue on in some capacity.
I will say, I'm tired of the lashings that both sides have been giving each other. Not one side is killing the game. There is room enough for both views, and remarkably enough many more than that when it comes to mechanics (Hero, and C&C are two examples I see referred to frequently here, as well as True20). Paizo's boards are remarkably civil. Most of the posters here are quite awesome, and I've got many good ideas from both lurking and posting on these boards. I like Paizo's boards because I'm made to feel comfortable here. There's such an edge in the air these days from 4th edition that it has become exhausting. It certainly can't be easy for the editors and publishers that frequent these boards. I know that there's a lot of bitter feelings on both sides, but we need to go back to what makes us a community.

All hail the fatbeards!
Hmm...I'm somewhat chubby and only have 2 days growth...so, I probably don't deserve a fullblown "hail"...
How about a friendly "Hey There" and a casual wave?

Hey, I was listening to this video and she let it slip about 4th Edition.
LISTEN CLOSELY
Video Answer on converting 3.5E material to 4E
Did you catch what she said?
She said 4.0
That's right. I don't want to hear "Oh, that's not what she meant." She slipped. What other reason is there to call 4th Edition 4.0 when it obviously implies that there will be a 4.5E?
Scott Rouse is such a liar, as he has been since the few weeks before 4th Edition was announced and continues to be, about there never being a 4.5E. Her statement alone already slipped what they have planned. 4th Edition is so much change, that you're definitely going to have players find problems with the game they couldn't find and then here comes 4.5E! Same thing happened with 3.0 and 3.5E.
Oh man, WotC cracks me up so much.
Lol. You need to get over yourself.

Does all this numbering of game systems mean that the higher number systems are better than the lower?
If so, then 3.1415 was Gamma World (or maybe The Marrow Project).
And any RPG that requires everyone to be nude will start with 1000.

This is all tabloid fodder....
If they make a 4.5 big deal, don't purchase it if you don't like it.
If the "grognards" don't want to accept something, they can deal with it.
These "ah ha! We got you WoTC" things are really tiring. They're a company, they need to uphold their objectives for making money/selling games. I personally never felt them to be anything "evil" like people like to portray them. Oh well banter on :)

I agree. I think the best thing that can happen to this thread is for it to fall back into the archives. To make sure that happens, I'm locking it. If something momentous happens that means this topic suddenly requires more discussion, a new thread can be created.
