I need a second opinion on a spell.
Mirror Image says you cant use Vision or Hearing to identify an Image. Would I be safe to assume that if a creature has Scent that it can detect which target is the correct one?

I've always ruled it as yes it can but at a cost. You need to be within 5ft and you need to keep your eyes closed meaning you have no idea what else is going on around you.

As they move around continuously and stay in such near proximity to the caster, I'd say that in a given six second round Scent would not be enough to distinguish the caster from the illusions.

Regardless of time, the Scent ability says "Whenever the creature comes within 5 feet of the source, the creature pinpoints the source's location." (MM, 314) Barring overwhelming odors the creature already knows that the target is within 15-60 ft. on wind direction. He just has to be within 5' to pinpoint.
Thanks guys. I was just looking into it for a PC who uses Mirror Image all day, every day. On with the Yuan-ti assassins!

Area effect spells. Damage done to the mirror image = *pop*
Hmm...
...and disappear when struck.
[...]
Enemies attempting to attack you or cast spells at you must select from among indistinguishable targets. Generally, roll randomly to see whether the selected target is real or a figment. Any successful attack against an image destroys it. An image’s AC is 10 + your size modifier + your Dex modifier. Figments seem to react normally to area spells (such as looking like they’re burned or dead after being hit by a fireball).
So, it looks like only spells that use an attack roll (or target the caster specifically) would "kill" one image. Other spells still mimic the casters condition after being hit by the spell. So area effect spells are no shortcut to get rid of these things. Magic Missile should work, however.
I wonder how a PC can have Mirror Image active all day long. The spell has a duration of 1min/lvl. What´s the story behind that?
Otherwise, Dispel magic or some other anti-magic can work wonders.

Seems you are correct. Magic missiles away!

Yeah, area effect spells pretty much don’t do anything to images. Our wizard had a fit about it because his fireball didn’t get rid of all of a minions images and I had to point it out verbatim. We pretty much narrowed it down to you have to make an attack roll against the target to make an image away. Magic Missiles always win!
It's not all day every day, he's a 14th Level Sorcerer with a Ring of Wizardry II. So it's not all day, but it's pretty much as long and whenever as he needs it.

Your players must not horde over rule books or troll message boards looking for "optimized character builds". LOL
The answer is "Persist Spell". Its one the most broken ability in the game, and if your the DM and they (players) haven't discovered it, then take the opportunity to disallow it.
For the record, my players would never persist Mirror Image; there's too many better (unbalanced) spells to persist instead.

I've had tremendous fun with Mirror Image. I gave it to Whitespawn Hordlings as a racial ability, and when 5, no, make that 20, Hordlings rush the party from all sides, their reaction si a sight to behold.
Um, anyways. Foiling it. I would allow Scent or Tremorsense to nerf Mirror Image if the detecting character were within range. But, as with all things, clever enemies eventually adapt. Scent is nerfed by strong odors in the area. Tremorsense is nerfed by flying critters.
