Yrar can see a rough stone ceiling which in places has tiles. They glisten in the light of the golden doors. He cannot make out a way for the sun to penetrate down here.

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar |

Fazaam's Knowledge (Arcana) and INT Rolls: (1d20+8=15, 1d20+4=19)
Fazaam looks thoughtfully at the images. Ghari notices that he looks, pensive. At his friend's concerned inquiry, Fazaam looks around the stairway, avoiding looking anybody in the eyes.
"There are stories about the ancient elves. Nobody wants to talk about it, so I don't really know what happened. But apparently there was a disagreement, or an uprising, or something. All I know was that it was supposed to have something to do with sun worship." He explains in an unusually subdued manner. He pets Hasan as he studies the figures some more.
After a moment he smiles wanly at Ghari. "I still have no clue what 'Sun-kissed and warm lover' means though!" He says with a semblance of his usual attitude.

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar |

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar wrote:"Well obviously the other lover lives in shadows and is cold?" Ghari quips.
After a moment he smiles wanly at Ghari. "I still have no clue what 'Sun-kissed and warm lover' means though!" He says with a semblance of his usual attitude.
Fazaam stops patting Hasan, and slowly turns toward Ghari. The elf's lips are pursed and one eyebrow threatens to lift clear off of his thin, angular face.
"I thought we agreed, you were going to leave the jokes to the professionals. Meaning me." He smirks, eyes shining with laughter.

Fudrick Boddymil |

Fudrick the answer is yes use CHA
Mr. Wolf:
Using Cha gives me enough to take a peak.
Ok, my real life ability scores are on the low side. Is Fudrick feeling real good about himself and life in general because of what is happening? Is there something hidden there that I should be able to easily grasp? I am sitting here scratching my head. I could just wing it and run with the info you have given me. It might confuse the party some more though. :)

Fudrick Boddymil |

Fudrick turns back to the writing to try and make sense of it. I just don't get it. What does .... Before he can finish the thought the words seem to fade away. As they do, a tremendous feeling of love seems to be entering his body. He closes his as and as he does a strange melody lightly fills the air as a ghostly visage of an angel appears to be kissing his forehead. Surprised he quickly opens his eyes. The only thing he sees is his friends the and the door. The words have almost completely faded, but the feeling inside of his still builds to a crescendo. He turns to the others, "Did you see or hear anything?" The others frown and shake their heads, "If I wasn't a man of faith I would think I was going crazy. I get this overwhelming feeling of love standing here. As if my goddess Hettama was on the other side of the door." Is it time to start singing Kumbaja my Lord?

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar |

Fazaam and Hasan exchange a look at Fudrick's words. Fazaam raises an eyebrow at Ghari and shrugs.
"It makes no sense for elves to lock up a representative of Hettama. Even if they could. But if they were trying to protect a holy relic, preserve it for safekeeping,... That makes sense."
He look around with a grin. "My curiosity is killing me! We've got to see what is on the other side of the door! Can anybody see a way to open it? Any luck with the chain Marwan?"

Ghari ibn Ayyadi |

Fazaam and Hasan exchange a look at Fudrick's words. Fazaam raises an eyebrow at Ghari and shrugs.
"It makes no sense for elves to lock up a representative of Hettama. Even if they could. But if they were trying to protect a holy relic, preserve it for safekeeping,... That makes sense."
He look around with a grin. "My curiosity is killing me! We've got to see what is on the other side of the door! Can anybody see a way to open it? Any luck with the chain Marwan?"
"Fazaam, Fudrick, does it make sense for a shrine to Hettama to be under ground ? This just doesn't feel right."

Yrar-Kynlas |

"Love you say?" Yrar looks at Fudrick and asks with a grin. "I love my hammer. You want me to smash this door. Maybe the door and my hammer will mate." Yrar lifts his hammer. Wearing a wicked smile, he plants the head into his hand and twists it into his palm while making a kissing sound. Then he laughs and moves closer to the door.

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar |

Fazaam is looking over Marwan's shoulder when Yrar offers to 'love' on the door. He smiles in response.
"Maybe. Why not? I've heard of stranger match-ups! Like this door for example. WHO builds a door with no keyhole, or lever, or knocker for that matter? There must be a way to open the thing, but how?!"
In frustration, he reaches past Fudrick and Marwan and grabs the chain. He gives the chain a yank. He shrugs.
"I thought maybe it was a doorbell?" He quips, giving the chain one more yank. "Open Sesame?"
Hasan buries his head in his hand. Probably from embarrassment.

Sheherazade |

As Fazaam tugs on the chain, the golden doors gather light and from their centre, a ray of scorching bright energy flies out at the elf.
White hot pain hits him in the shoulder, however most of the energy carries on past the party, dissipating in the wall.
1+1+1+4= 7pts of fire damage, boo, hiss
The dull doors before everyone slowly begin to shine again, bit by bit.

Fudrick Boddymil |

Still lost in thought on the meaning of the words he barely registers what Fazaam and Yrar are talking about. A split second before Fazaam grabs the chain he tries to grab his hand. "DON'T! As the word leaves his lips the searing bolt of light rips into Fazaam. Fudrick quickly helps the others lower Fazaam to the ground before checking on him.
With a worried look on his face he says, "Impetuous Elf. Now look at what you have done!"
Quietly does a prayer to the god that causes the DMs dice to roll 1's. If you die Yrar eats the monkey.

Fudrick Boddymil |

Fudrick

To keep my spells for actual combat. Can I use my new 4th edition Healing Word power to expend a healing surge on him? No? Oh well ...
After checking over Fazaam's wounds. Fudrick, still reeling with the tremendous power of love, closes his while saying a silent prayer to Hettama. As he finishes the now familiar golden twinkles of light swirl around Fazaam's shoulder. As they do so the wound slowly heals completely.
Gently helping the Elf up Fudrick says, "I know you are anxious to get to your girlfriend, but I don't think she would be expecting you as a ghost. Next time let the monkey touch the trap first." He finishes with a grin.

Ghari ibn Ayyadi |

Feeling the energy bolt past him, and hearing Fazaam cry out, Ghari hurries down to the doors. Fortunately, Fudrick has things under control immediately. To mask his concern Ghari asks cheekily, "Are you warm enough now? Maybe if we get you sun-kissed you'll be able to open the door."

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar |

Fazaam s-l-o-w-l-y opens his eyes.
Slowly they focus on Fudrick and Ghari leaning over him.
Slowly he opens his mouth.
"OW?!" He moans painfully. Managing to somehow describe not only what he is feeling, but also expressing how incredibly stupid it was to touch a door that he already knew was alive with magic, all in a single syllable. He opens his mouth to expound on this some more, but all that comes out is,...
"OW!" HE covers his eyes with his hand. "I told the monkey it was a bad idea." He says softly.
This brings an outraged screech from Hasan, who promptly leaps on his chest, and proceeds to berate the elf in a high-pitched chatter while shaking a tiny fist in his face. For a few moments Fazaam lies there. After another moment he peeks out from under his hand. When it becomes obvious that Hasan has no intention of slowing down anytime soon, Hasan takes the pinky finger of his sword hand and pops it into the monkey's mouth.
"Thank you Fudrick. It seems I owe you my life twice now." Fazaam says gratefully into the sudden, surprised, silence. "You'd better keep up Ghari, or I'll owe Master Fudrick here more than I owe you!" He adds with a grin. At this Hasan rolls his monkey eyes, and bites the hand that feeds him.
"Ow!" Fazaam cries, yanking his hand back. "Alright, alright! Enough Monkey Business! Get off me you miniature ape!" Fazaam laughs as he sits up carefully. "Next time you can try to open the door!" He adds as he stands up and Hasan reclaims his perch.
"Well, we've learned two important things. One, the door is magically trapped. Which leads to the logical conclusion that whatever is behind it is very valuable. Two, I should stick to what I'm good at, which is apparently not convincing magically chained doors to open!" He smirks self-depreciatively and bows.
"Masters Marwan, Fudrick and Shulim, I shall bow to your collective wisdom as to how to proceed about the doorway from here." He glances up at Yrar, still holding his club.
"Unless you still want to take a whack at it my friend? I wouldn't recommend it, it stings." He smiles.

Yrar-Kynlas |

Yrar looks at Fazaam, then holds his hammer up to his ear. "What's that?" Yrar asks as he looks at his weapon. "Hmmm. Yeah. I understand." Turning back to face the Elf, the Barbarian shakes his head, "My hammer says it no longer wants to mate." Turning to Marwan, "Can we open this thing or should we leave it for later and go save the girl. The Sea Witch is waiting, and HER, my hammer wants to mate with." Yrar ends with a solid nod and a hammerhead smash in his palm.

Marwan Al-Bahri |

After seeing Fazaam's misfortune, Marwan moves back from the chains
"I can try to disable whatever this is, I just need some time."
Did my disable trap roll earlier do any good? Or the Search?
Well I have a kinda bad feeling about doing it, but that is metagaming, and Marwan is a very impetuous (and wisdom deficient) type of character, so ....
Marwan takes a closer look at the silver chains. Intrigued by the construction he takes out a set of well-crafted picks and small tools wrapped in a well-oiled leather roll-up case and begins tinkering with the device.
Disable Device: 1d20+10=28, Search: 1d20+6=22
OK the high rolls makes me sure this is a bad idea ;P

The Cursed Shulim Al'Bheddah |

Shulim suppresses a smile once he see Fazaam is ok.
'Why is da half elf always gettin hit?' Shulim asks himself, 'dats easy,' he answers his own rhetorical question, 'cuz he deserves it.'
"Ok, as if we don't need no further proof no one else touches nothing till we're sure everyting is safe. I'll give ya a hand der Marwan."

"Just can't argue with solid logic like that!" He grins at Ghari as he rejoins his friend on the stairs.

Magical traps are notoriously hard to find, and Marwan sure tried. Its definitely magical. And if you pass an Int DC10
Spoiler:The gathering light indicates it is recharging and that can take a minute.Once found a trap can be disabled, otherwise Marwan doesn't know what to do.

Can Shulim get in on this action sense he was the one that had been looking for the trap in the first place?
aid other (disable device), Int check (1d20 8=21, 1d20 3=11)

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar |

Fazaam's shoulders sag when he notices the golden glitter beginning to form at the edge of the door.
"Oh boy. Here we go again."
As the golden glitter begins heading towards the center of the door the elf turns and shoves Ghari up the stairs.
"Guys, run!" He shouts at the gnomes and Marwan as he turns to follow his own advice.
"Move it or lose it tree-hugger!" Fazaam calls to Ghari as he nimbly bounds up the steps.

Just to be clear, Shulim was helping out with Marwan's attempt, and with a roll of 21 he successfully aided him. That's +2 to Marwan's roll (givin us a total of 30). Also I should note that our combined search check was 30 to find the trap (that a take 20 for Shulim, giving him a 28, and a successful aid other from Marwan).
Also I rolled to see if I could make the same INT check that Marwan was given, I got an 11 on that, but I'm waiting for your approval before I peek.

Marwan only got 22 on his search, making 24, not enough unfortunately.

I cannot allow you to take twenty, the trap represents a threat, or it will in 5 rounds time. Being generous, I will allow the pair of you to work as a team, that is five attempts to Search, once found I will allow Marwan's previous disable device roll to count. But each of you roll, Marwan to Search (five times) and Shulim to aid (five times). A combined search of 28 is needed but it must be on the same pair of your dice rolls. OK?
Also I rolled to see if I could make the same INT check that Marwan was given, I got an 11 on that, but I'm waiting for your approval before I peek.
Shulim, you can read the spoiler.

Marwan Al-Bahri |

Marwan searches feverishly for the mechanism of the trap
"Najm guide me through the shoals of ignorance to the port of knowledge!' He prays as his tools probe the workings of the door.
"Shulim, my erudite friend perhaps your knowledge could be of assistance here. Have you ever seen something like this?"
5 Search rolls: 1d20+6=14, 1d20+6=16, 1d20+6=25, 1d20+6=23, 1d20+6=15

Shulim rolls occurred when he first entered. Long before Fazaam or anyone actually touched the chain or door. Not sure if that matters. It is my understanding that search is one of the few skills that take 20 is allowed. My character is reduced to a rogue like character (with spells that are occasionally useful) in many situations, especially in dungeons, and really skill checks are all I have to feel useful.
My rolls:
Search (1d20 10=21, 1d20 10=18, 1d20 10=28, 1d20 10=17, 1d20 10=27)
There's quite a few rolls with a result of 18 or better, and one natural roll of 18 resulting in a check 28.

Sheherazade |

Shulim spots and works out where the energy trap is located on the door. Marwan sees what he needs to do with Shulim's prompting and the feverishly he picks at the area.
The door begins to glow fully then all of sudden goes dim.
Read the take 20 rules last night. Cannot use them when there is a threat. The door is a threat. QED. End of discussion on this. Thank you.

Fazaam Al-Nak'Bar |

Fazaam, bravely holding his position at the top of the stairs, calls down softly.
"What's going on? Are you guys alright?"
The elf glances at Ghari with a look of concern. "Should we go down and check on them?" He asks with a furrowed brow.
Fazaam glances back down the steps. "Of course, by 'we' I meant you!" He adds with a straight face.

Yrar-Kynlas |

"By Krakis's Salty-Sack! Enough of this. There's a girl to be saved," Yrar booms as he approaches the door. "Everybody back. Door, if you strike me I will smash you like you never been smashed before. Got it?" With a growl, Yrar grabs the chains and pulls / pushes on the door.

The Cursed Shulim Al'Bheddah |

Read the take 20 rules last night. Cannot use them when there is a threat. The door is a threat. QED. End of discussion on this. Thank you.
I'd just like to get some clarification first please: is it your ruling that I cannot use take 20 to find traps? Or did Fazaam interrupt my attempt by setting off the trap before I was finished searching? I'd like to know for future reference
"Is done," Shulim gasps, whipping the sweat off his forward, "it's done, we did it. Da trap is down." Shulim stands and grasps, Marwan's hand, "It's done! We did it! well done mate, well done!"
Shulim laughs, a nervous sounding cackle, sounding more like the release of stress rather then a giggle of any actual mirth. Shulim suddenly turns on everyone else.
"Now nobody touch any ting else till ether Marwan er me have a look at it! Our lives may depend on it. If we're going to fight a witch we gots to start using our heads . . . dis place could be a good test fer us."

Sheherazade |

My ruling is simple, each and every door may be trapped. Each and every trap may be a threat. You may not take 20 when it is a threat, otherwise you can.
Just to be clear, in future once I make a ruling then all further discussion goes in the discussion thread, where it can be dealt with whenever. My view is that the game and fun must go on, whatever the decision.
Yrar batters the door as Shulim finishes his speech. The chain and door resist his pushing and pulling at first then slowly he feels the left door give slightly.
No shining rays of energy comes out.
Thanks Yrar!

Fudrick Boddymil |

As soon as Fudrick hears Shulims cry of success he lets his shoulders drop as he relaxes. He rubs his shoulder as he realizes how much tension he was under as the two worked to disarm the trap before it reset. Yrar runs up and pulls and pushes on the door yelling at it. Right after a mighty shove Fudrick walks up and touches the chain and then the door to see what they feel like. He also tries to see if he can see anything through any cracks from it slightly opening.
Just trying to get a feel for what the two are made of and feel like.
Alright then no changing posts while I am typing stuff out!!

Yrar-Kynlas |

"Good Door," Yrar laughs, “I knew we could be friends,” he says as he pats it like a dog. Turning his head, he shouts down the hallway, “Hey Fazaam, no worries my friend. You’ll live now. The monkey’s welcome too. I won’t eat’em.”
Peering back through the door, Yrar takes a look around.
Spot Check (Roll 2+3=5), Listen Check (Roll 8+5=13)

Marwan Al-Bahri |

"Is done," Shulim gasps, whipping the sweat off his forward, "it's done, we did it. Da trap is down." Shulim stands and grasps, Marwan's hand, "It's done! We did it! well done mate, well done!"
Marwan shakes Shulim's hand
"Indeed most noble Shulim, your dexterity is as an angel dancing on a grain of sand! A thousand praises to the Navigator that we are through that rocky shoal!"
Marwan wipes the sweat off his brow and bows to Yrar.
"After you most noble Yrar."
