I just enrolled myself into 'The Rolling Dice School'. My first classes 'Helping Characters that Roll Like Crap' and 'Propers Ways to Dispose of Jinxed d20's' start tomorrow.

No need Yrar hit. Just

Male to Charles, my favorite pizza shop Dork 10, Husband 5, Paizonite 5, Accountant 0, Self-Entertainer 12

My third class is 'Damage Done Right: The Art of the Critical Hit'.

The Exchange

I was relying on that. If we were at a table your damage roll would have been the point where Yoraal (DM) would have been wincing.

I'm trying to understand why when I DM I can roll dice pretty good. But when I play...things seem a whole lot harder.

Male Human Rogue 1

Skills posted, will continue with rest through tomorrow!

"May the geneorus hands of Najm bring forth luck upon you and your household!"

I'll take a look at Marwan tomorrow sometime. Then we need to come up with a way for you to join the party. If you have any ideas feel free to post them via spoiler Patrick.

Cheers

Easiest might be to make Marwan part of the pirate crew. (He didn't know what he was getting into.) Then he could have been on the stakeout with Rag's and my character. Or have been sent looking for us.

Just my 2 cents.

The Exchange

Utak, your character is killing me. In a good, LOL kind of way.

Marwan looks fine. there are two details I'd like you to double-check.

1) I make him having 45 ranks instead of 44.
2) Disable Device seems to be missing the feat bonus.

As for background I am fine tuning that at the moment in my head. What you have written is good. But to get you to the party will require a bit of careful planning.

Cheers

I think Yrar took a hit on the head as a child.

Thanks, I am having a blast with Yrar.

Definitly several hits on the head.

That's a really great idea. I likes. This would give a great reason why Marwan would join us and create some great 'Do we trust him or not' roleplaying opportunities.

Yrar is working on a song now just for this possible situation. Stay tuned.

Cheers

Not to crush great role playing oppurtunities, or to interfer with someone elses character, but can we avoid the whole "do we trust him or not", it seems to me bad enough we have a cursed fop of an elf, it seems like there would be so many better things to do in this wonderful world than interparty conflict.

because the answer to the question of "Do we trust him or not" is logically no if its a question at all, and furthermore not trusting your teammates would only seem to lead to said interparty conflict.

I mean look, Roman trusts you to take out the zombie :) He didn't even retaliate when you unannounced threw an urn at my head, or tried to at least :)

okay the example doesn't hold but all and all, I don't find interparty conflict terribly interesting and would vote against it. how about he's from a trustworthy and likeable source and he helps out because he's a good natured chap. That's what I wish.

Male to Charles, my favorite pizza shop Dork 10, Husband 5, Paizonite 5, Accountant 0, Self-Entertainer 12

Logos,

By no means was I trying to incite interparty conflict. I was more or less just playing into Thereal Thom's suggestion because I thought it was a good idea. I was just throwing out more brainstorming ideas. I was more or less just thinking, 'Hey, can we trust this guy?' for a post or two; not 'Hey, if you backstab us I will crush you with my hammer.'

I apologize for any misunderstanding. I agree that interpary conflict is not a good thing. Also my posts are only suggestions I think of to fight the boredom of work. I never meant to to solidfy someone else's character into the campaign by having my ideas formed into Canon.

Please take my posts with a grain of salt. That is all they are. My posts are just random thoughts of the moment and should never be taken seriously.

Sorry again,

Cheers

No worries, I always am a bit daft with the math. Shaved off a point in Forgery to compensate and reworked the Disable Device. I am at your service whenever the plot needs me!

By the whim of Fortunes' Favorite, the Farthest Traveller, the Minstrel of Luck's Flute, I remain your most humble servant.

I'll post to you tomorrow about fitting you in mate.

I know, Marwan's a member of the original expedition, trapped somewhere nearby and he'll be able to tell us exactly what is going on. Cause I don't know. It's just becoming clear that killing your enemies is a bad idea here, unless they were dead to begin with.

The Exchange

Marwan

Spoiler:

I am going to give you the options on your background now. The party are on an island.

I guess you may have read the game thread already, if not, I suggest that you skim/read the important bits.

There are three alternatives as to how Marwan arrives with the party.

1) the other players have suggested the obvious one already. You could have been on the pirate boat with Ghari and Fazaam. They have been forced to spy on the island earlier in the week by the nasty captain Zerea. You could have come from the boat too. We can work out the details later but I have an idea.

2) The second idea is a bit more out in the left field. The party are in a chamber of Urns. The chamber dates back hundreds of years. You could have been magically held in one urn (caught tomb robbing) and to act as a servant in the afterlife.
The party have inadvertently broken open two urns. With that you could be freed.
Again I will supply you with more information if this idea takes your fancy.

3)Your own wonderful and original idea.

Cheers

The Exchange

I wanted to join in the discussion about interparty conflict. You guys need to know my views as the DM.

Firstly I try to let the PC's resolve their own differences, preferably in character. If it's out of character then I understand and I thought, Ragadolf, your urn lid throw was a great idea.

Secondly I have seen plenty of players play angry characters badly. There is a fine line between attacking everything at the least excuse and finding other ways to vent your anger. Because there will be times when the last thing you should do is attack and kill someone. If the party doesn't talk to some of the nastier NPC's then you guys will struggle with the plot. There wont always be notebooks and diaries left lying around that explain everything.

Personally the bottom line is that whatever a PC does, stealing/raging or
whatever, they must not harm or spoil the game for the rest.

The argument "but it's what my character would do" sometimes isn't good enough, I always tell PC's to find other solutions.

I think all of you already know, understand and play this way but I just wanted to spell it out.

The Exchange

Gentlemen I shall concentrate on bringing Patrick into the game over the next few days and I am pretty busy until Sunday so I will not be advancing the plot greatly until then.

Feel free to roleplay the denouement of the fight and make some decisions about what you are doing next. I will try to answer any Search checks etc that players do in the next few days too.

But bear with me, it has been pretty full on since the campaign started and I always intended to take small breathers, like this, from time to time.

Cheers

I would say that #1 makes the most sense to me. Marwan could easily have been shanghaied by the pirates to serve as a crewman, and be on the island or boat. #2 is a fascinating entry point, and I could totally go with that, but it also cauterizes the character's attachments in the greater game millieu (ie hooks like cousins, old friends, etc you might want later) If that never really was an issue, I could go for #2 as well. #3 , my own idea, was perhaps the pirate ship had done something to the ship Marwan was travelling/working on. Perhaps he had be apprenticed to an old sea dog who was teaching him nautical stuff and a bit of honest freebootery when the hard-core pirates captured their vessel. Perhaps Marwan escaped at the start, and now trails the pirate ship and attempts to free his friends on board. Any of these could work, but enjoy your week, and I will keep filling in Marwan's gaps!

Yes bring back Serpico! Anyone else is wellcome as well.

I am afraid real life DMing and other more mundane work takes precedence, Guy. Maybe next week?

Right Patrick, I agree with everything you said.

I'm aiming for Monday at the very latest to bring you on board so to speak.

For everyone Patrick's actual arrival with the party may seem a touch artificial but I'd rather complete the group sooner then wait for a more convenient moment. That could take a fair number of weeks in real time.

Ragadolf, hope I'm not out of line hijacking Hasan.

Logos, I often forget to use my avatar, but I've discovered that you can edit the post and change the "post as". I use this feature often.

You mean he's not part of the original party and won't be able to tell us everything? Oh sugar.

Welcome, then Patrick, and the sooner you're in the brain blender with us the better.

The editing only works for a fixed amount of time,

needless to say their would be even less roman posts without this.

thereal thom wrote:

Naw, for something like that your fine. (But thanks for checking!)

I'll be trying to come up with (hopefully) amusing things for Hasan to do to keep it rolling, but I can only think up so much 'funny' stuff in a week, feel free to add bits like that when they come to you.

Can't wait to meet the newest member of the 'crew'. :)

Excellent. I am going to finish fleshing out Marwan and hopefully be fully integrated by Monday and be ready to fight the good fight with you all.

PS: To echo Guy, anyone who has an old character from an old PbP game they never got to use, or the game withered, has an open invitation to bring them out of obscurity and have a drink over at The World Serpent Inn thread. No real adventure, just funny posts and general dart playing and hilarity. :)

That's a cool idea. I'll scope it out sometime.

The night is still young. And there are undead monkeys out there. We should be afraid, very afraid.

I scanned through most of the thread last night. Good stuff! I may have someone(s) who can drop in for a spell,... ;)

Oh, Yakamalah, (French Wolf)

Shulim has tossed me a softball on which I'll fan without help from you. He asked me about Zerea. Does she have any undead hanging around? For my own part, expanding on the theme, how does she keep the crew in line? Do we ever see her mom, Sea Hag Venimati?

Or you can let me embroider my own cloth and stitch it into your quilt later. I'd probably have her summoning sea creatures and tossing people overboard, or polymorphing them into jellyfish and tossing them overboard, or polymorphing them into fish and not tossing them overboard. I sure hope I'm not going overboard.

For Ghari/Fazaam

Spoiler:
Zerea has a way of getting people to do whatever she wants. There is no obvious magic but just a general lack of will around her.

There is something very unsettling about her eyes. As for combat, you have never seen anyone dare fight her. Expecially because of her big executioner Haxi with his greataxe. When he gets angry people get chopped or run for their life.

Hey Folks,

Sorry for the absence. My mother is in the hospital again. She is expected to be in for a few more days. I may not be around to post for a bit.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Real life comes first. Take the time you need, the game will be here when you get back.

Prayers coming her way. Hang in there. You take care of your mother.

And Happy St. Patrick's Day to all! (Hey, the thought of green beer makes ME smile, and I don't even like beer!)

Patrick - you're in. see main thread.

Any questions then let me know.

Kind of like Weasel stomping day?

Messier DM,...
"Marwan" brings up a question. How well do we KNOW him? We know he is on the crew, so I doubt that we have seriously tried to strike up a close friendship with him. But, It would also be pretty noticeable (to us at least) that he isn't the most bloodthirsty one aboard either.

What I'm asking is, what do Ghari & I KNOW about him?

Sovereign Court

Male hu-man Paladin

Also: what happened to the other gnome . . . and which one is missing :)

Yes I forgot about Shulim. My mistake.

As for Marwan, to keep things simple I would say that of the crew of about fifteen to twenty pirates, you knew most of them by name and a few of them better. I'll leave it to you guys to decide the details in this discussion thread.

Bear in mind that the Sea Harem is run by fear, fear of Zerea and her bully boys so the rest of the pirates are pretty much in the same boat. To a greater or lesser extent they do as they are told.

Cheers

Guy Humual wrote:

What French Wolf meant to say was not that he forgot Shulim, but that the spot DC for him, swathed in the drab blanket and asleep again was so high that only a hawk or dragon would have a chance of spotting him. The snoring, Marwan attributes to some gigantic hungry jungle beast, while the rest of us have plugged our ears. ;p

Rags wrote:

And when did we know it? Almost as important, what do we know that he knows about us?

French Wolf, is all non-lethal damage healed?

The Exchange

You have had about 11 hours rest, including watches so that's a total of twelve hit points of non lethal damage returned to you all.

I'm not sure how many points of non lethal damage Shulim took in all but if its more than twelve then he is still slightly bruised.

Cheers

P.S. What do we all think of the new Pathfinder stuff with regards to this game?

The Exchange

Sorry, I was out yesterday at a doctors appt. and had a ton of stuff to do at home. I need to post today but things at work are kind of busy. If I get a few minutes during work I will post, but definitely expect a post tonight. This weekend will probably be light to as it is Easter and I will be out of town for most of it.

I just breezed through the new rulebook. My first thought is they are trying to keep it close to 3.5, but add in some of the 4th edition changes. Things like spells (0-level from what I remember) that are cast at-will a certain number of times, each level grants some kind of bonus, and class daily specials. It will be interesting to see what it will look like next year. I do think putting it out there in the alpha stage for feedback is a great idea. WotC should have done that to begin with.

Sorry, inet access is spotty at best at work, and boards seem to be slow as !@#$ at home.

I'll keep up as best I can!

Regarding the PF RPG, I'm excited about the possibilities, and certainly appreciate what they are trying to do, but I'm not yet ready to go changing my current PbP characters just yet. (Doesn't mean I couldn't be talked into building another character though, like I'm not in enough already!)
