I am sure that somewhere there is a sea ranger variant, a bit like a navy seal or marine. Perhaps you would like to change one or two of the ranger abilities to suit the campaign?

I'll try to remember where I saw one, otherwise we could just amend his skills and the like to fit in with a water warrior.

Cheers

That's exactly what I was shooting for...no pun intended. I've seen one somewhere, too, and it's been gnawing at me where exactly I spotted it. I'll go digging as well, but let me know if you stumble across anything.

Hey all,
still wading thru that 'Players Handbook' of the Splintered Isles! Great stuff mr wolf!

A couple of questions,...
you mentioned that you would prefer ONLY the Feats from the SRD, but I was wondering about "Sorcerer Heritage Feats" and such? These were posted in various supplements, but Usually Dragon Magazine.

These feats and various class variants (Also from Dragon Mag) can be found here on this web site,...

CrystalKeep

They organize everything very well, AND cite the original sources! All sources are 'Official' from WotC and Dragon Magazine.

Sully, look there for your ranger variants as well, I believe they have a few different ones. I know one character in one of Aubrey's Campaigns I'm reading is using the 'Mystic Ranger' variant class.

basically toying (ie-'Torn between') a swashbuckler who develops sorcerer in a few levels, or a straight caster who THINKS he's a swashbuckler! (This would have to be some variant of Elf to give him the required weapon proficiencies!)

I am also looking at the 'domain wiz' variant from the SRD website, (It basically gives a Wiz 1 bonus spell per day that he can cast at +1 lvl, but it is ONLY one spell/level that he can so this to) I'm thinking that a 'Storm Domain' Wiz for a sailor-swashbuckler sounds interesting.

Anyhoo, lots of stuff to think over! I'm off to read a bit more, then off to bed! Let me know what you think about the Crystalkeep site everybody, even if you don't decide to use it!

Thanks!

OK, I think I found my character.
Spoilered for long-windedness,...

Spoiler:

I'm looking at the 'Generic Spellcaster' option from Unearthed Arcana/SRD.
basically a Sorcerer with options to let you choose your own best save, and pick a few of your 'Class skills', etc.

SO, thinking along the lines of Reflex as best save, with Tumble, Bluff and similar for 'Class Skills' to reflect his Swashbuckler-ness. And I've always thought that the sorcerer fit the Al Quadim feel better than the Wiz. (Even better than the Sha'ir in some ways!) So the spellcasting is right for me.

I am planning on a Noble Elf, who had shown a proclivity for natural magic, (Say, wind, weather or electrical spells, probably due to a Djinn in the family tree.) But to his family's dismay, refused to 'Buckle up and study' to master his talents.
Young for an elf, (Young Adult), he wound up leaving the rigid training confines of the island settlement, (Would the Elves be on the Sorcerer's Isle you mentioned?) (HE may have left without his parents blessing, or they may have arranged for him to work on a ship where someone they knew could 'keep an eye' on him.)

While on the ship he learned to sail (barely, he'll have at least a couple of ranks in Prof:Salior) and to fight (Adequately) when the inevitable pirates made their appearance. Otherwise he spent most of his time swinging in the ships' rigging and avoiding the real work. This could also be where he meets Sully's character, if we decide that they know each other.

That's the basics of the idea, I'm working this weekend, but I'll try to get the basics hammered out and on the website by Monday so you can take a look and tell me what you think.

The basics look good. I'll work on your questions over the weekend but leave the rest until I see a full write up of skills etc.

For the sake of the rest of the party, we have our arcanist.

In terms of background for you AND Garyn Avery

Spoiler:
I am intending to insert you both into the island as a pair of forced or "enslaved" pirates. The slavery will be in the form of a blackmail that if you both don't work for the pirates then a sister of Garyn (love interest for our swashbuckler) will suffer.

Cheers

P.S. I'll have a look at crystalkeep link also.

I have already constructed the 'persona page' and started filling in the basics. I haven't posted as him yet because I'm not crazy on the name. I like the MEANING, (I looked up arabic names) just not happy wit how it sounds. like 'Sinbad' you know?

But I hope to have it complete in the next day or 2, depends on what work and home throw at me.

In other words, YES! before next MOnday for sure! :D

I'll post a few questions for you about my feat choices and such when i get the chance to type them up.

Thanks!

EDIT- I assume that the 'Noble Elf' is the basic PH elf? and not one of those variants I saw on Crystal Keep?

Most definitely. I have to go back out of town for a few days this week, but I should have a good backstory and completed character by Monday. Have a great week all, and best of luck.

The Exchange

Noble elves are the gray elves of the Monster Manual, proud, aloof ...

Thanks for the quick response both of you.

Sully when you go out of town are you "offline"?

Cheers

Grrr,... boards are hungry again today. They ate my post, it's gone now!

Repeat for if it doesn't come back,

Noble Elf=Grey Elf, "Proud, Aloof" etc. Cool,...

Do they use the 'Standard' (PH) stats of +2 Dex, -2 Con (?)

OR do they use the 'Grey Elf' Stats of +2 Dex, -2 Con, +2 Int, -2 Str (?)

Working on it! IF you want to look at the character page, I have listed what skills i have chosen as Class Skills, and have listed the feats I am primarily considering. Waiting on the stat answer to set those in stone and get serious about building.

Question #2- Wiz's start with "All 0 lvl spells, 3 -1st lvl spells, Plus 1 spell per point of Int bonus" (Bold mine)
Sor's spell are set in stone, (No bonus to 'spells known' for high stat, only to spells per day.)
I am a 'Spellcaster' with Int as his caster-base stat. Will I get bonus 'spells known' at 1st lvl or not?

Thanks!

The Exchange

1) As per the SRD a grey elf gets four stat changes.

2) As I said before - since yours is a generic build - I suggest you complete what you think and I'll go thru it line by line.

Cheers

Coolio!

Thx!

NM I forgot you were playing a generic spellcaster, my [presumptious[ bad

Actually got a lot done on the char last night.
Finalized stats, skills, saves, basic combat notes, etc.

Spoilered for length, (Sorry, I'm gonna write a book someday and get this out of my system!) :D

Spoiler:

I have narrowed the starting feats down to several pairs and listed them. The primary thing I'm interested in in using heritage or bloodline feats to flesh out the character's abilities, and maybe give him a few more spell choices to make him different than your usual 'blaster-caster'.
(I'm trying to strike a balance on the usual party support spells (IE-'Blaster'), and spells that help him stay alive in combat (since he thinks he's a swashbuckler!), but won't help out the party as a whole.

IF I go with 'bloodline' feat, I'm thinking of writing my own. (Don't worry, NO 'blaster spell' at every lvl!) It would probably be: 1st-Protection from normal missiles (or Air Bubble), 2nd-WindWall, 3rd-Fly, etc. to reflect the Djinni/air theme.

It might be easier (IMO) to just use the 'Celestial Sorcerer Heritage Feats' Pretty much as written, (burn a spell slot to get an ability for a round/lvl of slot spent) and just rename them "Genie Sorcerer Heritage Feats"

All this is assuming, of course, that you even ALLOW these feats! ;)

I REALLY have this whole 'genie in the family history' thing on the brain! I'm going to write his background and use this influence as the reason he 'wandered away' from the strict training he was receiving from the family on the first place!

If I was to take a familiar instead, do YOU know of any critters that will fit well into the desert/arabian nights theme? Closest thing I can think of is a ferret or osprey? (Hawk)

OK, that's enough for now! I'll TRY to have everything finished BEFORE the weekend, background and all, so you can drop us in at your leisure.

Thanks again, This is gonna be fun! :D

The Exchange

I'll get back to you when I have had time to thoroughly digest this PC.

Cheers

I've managed to get most of the 'crunch' done. I still need to settle on Feats. I'm looking at your area info before I try to type up the background. I'm working long tomorrow (Friday) and Sat, so it probably wont be 'fluffed' till Sat night at the earliest.

But I'll try! sometimes I do surprise myself!

see you soon!

Ragadolf Spoiler

Spoiler:
What a character. I will definitely be playing a generic PC now that I have read it in more detail (especially when you can take spells from divine and arcane lists).

What I shall do is break this down into the spoilers that you have used.

Stats: fine.

Skills: fine, fits with the whole swashbuckler theme.

Feats: My preferences are as follows. If you want to take a generic PC then stick to the feats as in UA. If you want to take a bloodline then stick to the two in UA, Djinn (p25) and Janni (p26). The Jann are a half-way house of demihuman genies and do exist in the Splintered Isles.

Or perhaps you could go with Efreeti, I could see a case for the sun-worshipping noble elves intermingling with the fire genies?

I'd prefer not to get into the creation of celestial style genie heritage feats. This PC is far enough out in left field as is.

Now for the piece de resistance, you can have a capuchin monkey familiar if you want. I was going to bring one in and my guess is that you could handle it. God knows what I am letting myself in for. But what the hell.

Languages:I haven't changed these for this world so those are fine.

Son has woken up I'll do the rest later on.

Cheers

The Exchange

Ragadolf Spoiler Part two

Spoiler:
Moving on to Combat
Combat: fine except that mage armor doesn't improve your touch AC (17/13/14).

Elf Stats: please amend racial weapons so that scimitar instead of longsword for flavour of the Isles.

Spellcaster Magic Info: You have obviously put a huge amount of work in so I am going to err on your side (mostly).
Yes to bonus spells to cast per day for high INT - god generics rock!
No to Sorcerer sphere its too cheesy but you can "know" one extra air spell per level. Otherwise stick to knowing the number of spells as per a sorcerer.
I don't know fleeting flame but if you put it on the alias, then that's fine. By the way I have the Spell Compendium.

Overall I love this PC, however I think it would be very easy to become a jack of all trades and a master of none. Potentially he could be a weak fighter, poor cleric, with sneak attack and decent arcane power. I recommend focussing on one or two of these. As you can probably guess I intend this game to last and I'd like this player to last too. He could be a cracker.

Cheers mate

Question for Sully

Spoiler:
I don't know how far you are with your PC but you could just take over the nice gnome, Shulim el Bheddah, if you prefer. His stats are near the beginning of this discussion thread under Evil Genius but since he never posted - I feel that Shulim is fair game.

Or take the name, and the fact he uses a crossbow and make a PC of your own devising. He hasn't done anything yet. Barely spoken in fact. Otherwise I am going to have to find a way to ditch him.

Must. Keep. Gnomes. Alive.

Ragadolf Spoiler

Spoiler:
You talked about a Sorcerer's Isles in my Splintered Isles info (for your background) but I can not spot what place you are referring to. What have I missed?

For da' wolfie,...

Spoiler:

on the first page of this thread, under "Island of Mussal" third paragraph,...

"Also the village has a failing dwarven armoury with a small family of prospectors. Across the small bay are two small islands upon which reside several sorcerers and explorers. There is an active volcano on one island and both have many old ruins, some as yet undiscovered.
Villagers often earn a great deal fetching and carrying for these people."

It may not fit, But I saw it and thought I'd ask. (It may be a place that aspiring casters seek to journey to?) Mainly I guess I need to know where the most likely source of sun-worshipping magic-using elves would be from,... FOr my background it doesn't really matter, mainly for me.

Been stoopid busy at work this weekend, (I run an auditorium for a busy University.) So I'm just getting started on my background. As far as your other notes,...

-Thank you for your kind statements, let's see how well I manage to play him!

-Scimitar for longsword,..no prob, was gonna ask you that myself (I saw the 'desert elves' on the Crystal Keep site.)

-MOnkey! YES! Another thing I was gonna ask you and never got around to typing! (Great minds really DO think alike!) I love the idea (a'la Alladin & Abu) As far as 'What are you letting yourself in for?' Have you been reading my earlier Slidell posts? :P
I will probably take this option. (Feats Weapon Finesse & Familiar) With the 'familiar bonus'/Christmas present. Thanks, it's NEVER too late for Christmas! :D

-Spells, Thank you. I will only take 'bonus' spells known as per my Int bonus, (Currently 1 each lvls 1-4) And I will keep them all to the air theme.

-Thanks for pointing out the bloodlines in the UA, I completely missed them somehow! But, as you have politely pointed out, This char is already walking the line. I'm no powergamer, but even I can admit that any MORE 'adds' to him is just looking to boost him. So I'll probably skip on all that. (PROBABLY) ;)

-I agree about your observations of what this char could turn into, (Jack of all, master of none.) And I thought hard about what spells he should take. (Healing, was a good reason to get 'recruited' into service, but the 'group' already has a healer, etc) So I think I'll stick to playing him as a fairly straight caster, but the variety allowed by using the Cleric/Druid lists will help to give him a different flavor, a more 'Don't know what to expect Arabian-Nights Sorcerer' feel.

-Spells-One question, I know that the bonus to AC from 'Mage Armor' is 'Armor', it does NOT stack with other 'Armor' bonuses, BUT-I thought that since it was a force effect, it was proof against Incorporeal attacks, AND added to AC vs. touch attacks?? (If not, no argument, just wanted to clarify BEFORE I got into a fight! That's just the way my group has always read it.)

-Spells-'Fleeting Fame' is on the Crystal Castle site, but I also plan to put all my spells under the 'Spellbook' spoiler. (I have noticed that not ALL of the spells from the 'Spell Compendium' are on the Crystal Keep list yet.)

That's all I remember right now. I'll try to have the background up tonight. Then I'll tweak after your suggestions, and I'm ready to roll!

The Exchange

Ragadolf Spoiler

Spoiler:
Thanks for the response.
1) The islands you mention are the start point from the adventures. The party is presently exploring one with a view to meeting a gnome explorer. I would prefer you to come from elsewhere on the island of Vinngor, such as Bidikah (the capital) or make a place up on the north or northwest coast.
2) I've seen lots of arguments about mage armor and I agree with everything you say up until the point about it improving your touch AC. I am firmly in the camp of armor bonuses do not whether they are a force effect or not.
3) Glad you like the monkey. Could you stat one up on your alias (including skills) when you get a chance, it doesn't have to be today.
4) I sense that you will alot of effort into the choice of spells so I'm happy, just run new ones by me at a level bump.

Cheers

Mr Wolf,...

Spoiler:

-LUV the monkey, Thank You! Already statted, double-checking skills, etc.

-MAge Armor= I've heard all the same arguments, If the Dm says it doesn't add to touch AC, that's ok by me. (There are other spells that will, and i'll get them! ,... eventually.) :P

-Will add new spells to spellbook, if there's a problem i'll change it.

-Description is basically done. (Will tweak after I get some sleep!)
-Background is started. WIll finish tonight, i hope!)

-Still need to purchase Equipment. (Basically a backpack full of basic starting gear.)

So, I'm 95-96% ready!
Thanks!

Mr. Wolf and Sully,

Please read the background section of Fazaam, (located at the very bottom of his character page), and tell me if that (at least basically) works for you both.

I still have to buy some gear, and add spells to the spellbook, and I THINK i'm done! (FINALLY!)

Ragadolf - you are ready. I shall insert you into the game in the next day or so. With or without Sully's ranger. The effort in your guy is great and you are a welcome addition to the happy gang.

Sully - I could do with a response of some kind. This lack of communication is a touch unfair to your fellow players and this DM. Whatever the reason for the current delay it is better to let us know in advance.

Thanks Mr Wolf,
I am looking forward to it! (Now I just hope the char plays as well as the hype!)

I hope Sully is OK, looking forward to joining in everybody!

Ragadolf - I'd like you to make a couple of small changes to your PC and his background. Could you change the references to Rasputin, Sinbad, and Harryhausen to something more Arabian and less Real World. I can see the humour but they tend to jerk me back to reality when I'd rather stay in Neverneverland.

I didn't spoiler this because I wanted everyone to be aware of my preferences.

Thanks.

No problem,

Spoiler for Ragadolf

Spoiler:
The information below is to get you into the campaign. It may require a slight tweaking of your recent background, but nothing major.

Fazaam and Garyn joined the Sea Harem under the Sea witch Zerea. This was largely forced on you by her mother, the legendary Sea Hag Venimati. Zerea holds Garyn's sister hostage on the Sea Harem and has made you an offer you cannot refuse.
Since then Zerea has attempted to push the bounds of your willingness to work, almost as much for sport. She actively supported your takeover of the monkey --- from its owner Dursir, knowing that you had made a lifelong enemy of the barbaric warrior.

Now the Sea Harem and its crew wait off the coast of the island of Shelitan. You, Garyn and the bullying Yoraal were sent two days ago to watch and spy on a gnome sorcerer on the island, and then report back. Zerea ordered Yoraal to make sure he returned within a week or she would begin hurting Garyn's sister, Temusa. Cold and chilling was the woman's laughter as you rowed to the island.

It took the rest of the day to find a trail through the jungle to the camp. Then the three of you watched and waited. Listening in that evening it seemed that the gnome, Zatari, and his men were working up a single trail to the volcano. In a place called the Chamber of Urns.

Next morning they travelled up the trail and into an excavated entrance. None of you entered but Yoraal decided to wait back at the camp and listen in again that night.

That night, Zatari and one of his servants, Mokarin, argued in his wooden hut over a silver urn and whether it should be opened. Mokarin eventually lost the argument when Zatari shouted "It is surely a tool of the hag, I am Badasah and I am in charge. We leave it stoppered until Bidikah."

This following morning, you three were surprised by the sudden departure of the gnome and his men up the volcano. Not sure why. The tall grass and early start meant you couldn't really get ready in time to hear or see what had happened.

Four or more hours later a group of the servants came running down to the camp. The two in front carried another man and were screaming madly when they hurriedly grabbed stuff in the camp. They left the other in Zatari's hut. All Yoraal would say he saw, for it was his turn to watch and listen was that they were attacked by an "evil one". One man fled with a silvered dagger after slashing the Evil One and the other was dragged into the jungle.

You all heard the screams cut off.

Yoraal sat nervously sucking and biting his thumb mulling over what he had seen, but he wouldn't tell you two. Then he decided that you should leave and try to reach the rowing boat and the Sea Harem before dark.

Thirty minutes of journeying later Yoraal stepped into the jungle to relieve himself and something evil screamed and fought with him. Garyn and you fled in a moment of terror which turned into sheer panic when you realised that the monster was following. Reaching tall grass, you instinctively headed for the camp while Garyn disappeared back into the jungle.

Crashing through the tall grass you reach the camp and the party.... maybe with a monster hot on your heels.

Appreciate it Ragadolf. And you have been busy.

With Evil Genius and Sully's no show I was beginning to wonder if I was cursed.

One question I have for you guys is would you prefer me to keep recruiting a fifth or stick with the four of you.

I doubt that Shulim will stay all that long since I'm not keen to DM and NPC him long term.

My other question is really what do you all think of the game, players, DM, etc. If we were sat round a table I'd be asking that self same question at the end of a session.

Please let me know.

One mistake I have picked up on is the way that the whole "return to the beach for supplies" could have been handled. Next time I wont make such a big issue of little details like that. Fudrick - I thought you handled the whole thing well though.

Cheers

Hey-Ooooooo,

I’m fine with the four of us. I truly think we’ll create some nice chemistry once we get a feel for our characters and each other. That said, I have not paid complete attention to the type of characters we all have. I try to do this on purpose to learn throughout the actual play of the game. So with that said, are we short in the Rogue department at the moment? If we are, no biggy, we can manage. Then again, there are always new threads popping up in the ’Gamer Connection Forum’ about someone begging to get into a game. If we want a fifth player, the earlier in the life of a PbP, the better IMO.

As per Shulim, next time the sleepy Gnome is injured, Yrar will just have to make sure that Fudrick’s healing energies are depleted. :)

Per the game, truly a good time. You have this whole ‘First episode of ‘Lost’ thing’ going on at the moment that has me truly intrigued. Also, what I think you are doing really well are the little challenges that each group member has to participate in. (ie: going around or jumping over the pit) Something as simple as this created a fun roleplaying encounter which included the entire group.

FYI - Busy day, but I am intermittently trying to put a post together.

Cheers

Yes the supply part was a little off. It just happened to fall on a day I couldn't post much at all. I think the only thing left to clear up is who will get the dagger. Initially when we first landed I left it there hoping one of the others would pick it up like Shulim. I know you are DMPCing him though so I can imagine you have your handful as it is. No one picked it up and I completely forgot about the supplies. So when you mentioned them again I thought it would be a good time to grab it.

Yrar or Roman one of you take the dagger. It is Masterwork and in a gemmed scabbard. If neither of you do not want it I will hold on to it.

Thanks for the compliment Mr. Wolf. With my absence in posting the other day. I thought it would be good to try and tie up supplies and dagger issue.
