I'm just waiting on some Dimmu Borgir lyrics... THEN I'll pounce. Not exactly a brain trust but they put on a fun show.

Vårt hat skal vinne.
Vår ondskap skal gro.
A feste seg i unge sjeler.

Den siste krig skal vi vinne,
Og de godes blod skal falle som regn.
Deres korte sjeler skal samles.

Vi skal rå de over kaos og evig natt.
Vi skal glemme de kvinnelig vikante mødre,
Og utslette alt.

BTW, if Dimmu condones anything inhumanly awful, I wouldn't know... my Norweigan is poor, at best.

I guess that's a hint? Lessee...

Our hatred shall win
Our evil shall grow
And take root in young souls

We shall win the last war
And the blood of the good shall fall like rain
Their short (Stunted? Puny? This makes no sense to me) souls shall be gathered up

We shall reign over chaos and eternal night
We shall forget the female substitute (WTF?) mothers
And annihilate everything

As for their position of evil and awfulness - it's hard to tell if they actually advocate anything here at all, as it makes no sense whatsoever. At least not to me.

Need a hint? This was written by a guy who comes in every color, but a song of the same name was sung by a man who died savatagely.

Both authors took the title from a piece of orchestral music written for an Ibsen's play Peer Gynt.

That would be "The hall of the mountain king", which is an awesome piece of music. Didn't Savatage do a song of that name?

Purple is certainly a color of the rainbow, and leads the way to the composer of the first set of lyrics.

Ding ding! We have a winnah! Yep, read up above... I say the singer died savatagely. The Savatage lyrics are presented up above as well. I saw them perform that song live back in 88 in Long Island at a club called Sundance.

The first lyrics were from the group Rainbow, and were written by Ritchie Blackmore.

Heathcliff,
It's me, Kathy, I've come home,
So cold,
Let Me into your window!

Cool I knew Richie Blackmore was in Rainbow...

Thanks for the translation.

Here was the one I was working off of: (that said, I still have no idea what they're talking about)

Our hate shall win
Our evil shall grow
To fix itself in young souls
The final war shall we win
And the blood of the good shall fall as rain
Their short souls shall be gathered together
We shall reign over chaos and everlasting night.
We shall forget the womanly weak small mother
And end all

Okay... you guys are good. Get this one and my mind will be blown. I'd be amazed if anyone could even name the group:

To battle, to battle, the Saracen hordes
We follow the warrior king
Onward, ride onward, into the fight
We carry the sign of the cross
Warlords of England, Knights of the Realm
Spilling their blood in the sand

Heath, your post hasn't shown here yet but I read it from the main page.

Yes, Crusader by Saxon. Consider my mind thoroughly blown.

Is it Crusader by Saxon?

Weird how that happens... I saw your post five minutes ago from the main page and it says it's only ten seconds old now.

Have it! It's a "Play on Friday Afternoon" tradition in my one-person IT department. :D

Ahem...here's my contribution to the fun:
Through the door, there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh, my friend, we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts, the dreams are still the same

I was wondering if that was Wuthering Heights/Benatar. Did that song open with "You know and I know my clone sleeps alone..."

Liberty's Edge

I didn't know Pat Benatar did it too. I was going with Kate Bush.

Word for word, your version is just fine; I did a little reshuffling of the words to make it into somewhat better English. Only thing is the line about the mothers, which is plural (and still makes no effing sense whatsoever).

Either the original lyrics came to me wrong or these guys are spouting gibberish. I'd say even odds either way. ;)

That's a great song! Unfortunately, I have no idea who's singing it. Does that get me a half-cookie?

*gives Vattnisse a brownie, 'cause she's nice that way*

Ah, the mathematics of snack foods: 1 brownie = 0.5 cookies.

Spoiler:
The song is called "Those were the days" or some such thing. But who's the gal singing?

Great band, too bad Jon's doing solo stuff (although his stuff is good as well) and not really working with Trans-Siberian Orchestra anymore. "Handful of Rain", "Poets and Madmen" (the pic in the liner notes went well with the story, didn't notice it until it fell on the floor ; ) and "Edge of Thorns" are my top three.

The Exchange

I don't know Mr. Shiny's contribution at all.
Here's one from a band I would've liked to went more obscure with but was afraid you guys may not get it.

I’ll take seven lives for one
And then my only father’s son
As sure as I ever did love him
I am not afraid!

Got to be Dream Theater. Sounds like "Pull me Under."

Not that obscure, but then, I'm getting old.

Grand Lodge

He's got me stumped as well. Your lyric is Dream Theater's "Pull me under", right? That's just about the only DT song I really like, so I got lucky there (assuming I'm right, of course).

Edit: Drat! MWBeeler beat me to it!

Both of you are correct. I love Dream Theater, the lyrics are magical and sadly, that song is about all that most people will recognize of them even though it isn't even close to their best stuff.

Grand Lodge

How about this one? Shouldn't be particularly difficult:

I am let loose from the noose
That's kept me hanging about
I keep looking at the sky cause it's gettin' me high
Forget the hearse cause I'll never die

Scarab Sages

Back in Black, AC/DC

Ok, that's terrifying. I'm "listening" to that song right now (although I ought to add I'm chuckling to the "Hayseed Dixie" version).

AC DC - Back in Black.

My contribution:
What you sow you will reap
We will laugh while you weep
Burn your house to the ground
Never touch a faerie mound

Grand Lodge

AC/DC it was. How 'bout something less metal - this is another of my all-time favourite songs:

Asked a girl what she wanted to be
She said baby, "Can't you see
I wanna be famous, a star on the screen
But you can do something in between"

Edit: Whoa! More cross-posting! That one rings no bells with me, though.

The Exchange

Here's another one:

After the battle is over
And the sands drunken the blood
All what there remains
Is the bitterness of delusion.

and one more to chew on, this should be REALLY easy:
What will you do when your future unfolds?
Life as you've known it, you'll be much too old
Days of your youth were all spent in defense
Memories are painful, the thoughts you resent.

The Exchange

Never heard that one....sorry, no bells at all!

The first one is easy - that's Celtic Frost's "Circle of the tyrants".

Second one - no idea. Could it be Metal Church's "Fake healer"? If it is, y'know, REALLY easy?

Correct on the first, not the second. Same album though.

Fake Healer wrote:

Don't need to be old to like them Beatles. This one (which is not a Beatles song) is sorta old as well:

In the days of my youth, I was told what it means to be a man,
Now I've reached that age, I've tried to do all those things the best I can.
No matter how I try, I find my way into the same old jam.

That last song's on the Blessing in disguise album? Hmmm...

Mmm, Zeppelin. Good stuff, I've always liked that particular one.

I used to not care for the Beatles, but just this last month I've developed a strange appreciation for their talents. Added Helter Skelter and Happiness is a Warm Gun to my playlist.

The Exchange

I know I was meant for much better things
No time to sleep, so I've lost all my dreams
Look forward to nothing, look back at the same
I'll spend my life here and deal with the pain

The choice has been made, you all will be slaves
Unreasonable power
I mock at the suffering and grow strong by the hour

Hatred grows among the ones destined to be slaves
But only life itself can lead you to your grave
Lost in thoughts of what you're told to do for someone else
I don't think you're superior, you're making my life hell!

A good bit more to help you narrow down the song. Metal Church:Blessing in Disguise is the album.
I bolded my favorite line in the song just because.

"I crawl like a viper through these suburban streets
Make love to these women, languid and bitter-sweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home-sweet-home"

The Jade wrote:

Nope, it starts out "Out on the wily, windy moors/we'd roll and fall in green" or something to that effect.

Heathansson wrote:

I prefer Kate's version (the original, of course) but Benatar's is good if you like that late 70's rock sound. Her voice suits the song well.

Sounds familiar... Can I have a clue -is is 80's to early 90's american hard rock?

The Exchange

Er, no - 1970s soft rock.

This is a Steely Dan tune, right? I can never seem to remember their song titles, though...

Vattnisse wrote:

It is indeed.

"I'll learn to work the saxophone
I'll play just what I feel.
Drink scotch whiskey, all night long
And die behind the wheel.
They've got a name for the winners in the world,
I want a name when I lose.
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide.
Call me Deacon Blues."

I despair slightly that everyone of these boards seems to be into metal.

OK, how 'bout this:

It's a bit of an acquired taste, I guess... Steely Dan's one of those bands I like enough to turn up the radio when they come on, but, at the same time, I don't have any of their albums. I often find their music a bit twee, but the lyrics are always clever enough to warrant a listen.

This, however, is most definitely not a metal song; the great Dave Barry immortalised it as the winner of his "Stupidest song ever" competition. What is it?

Someone left the cake out in the rain
And I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
