Kellen Wrensler |
"He looks all right. "
"Hey stranger, care for a throw? I'm Nik. THis 'ere's Stilgar."
"Well met, neighbor. My name's Kellen, by the way."
Eyes the handiwork the pair have inflicted on the nearby stump. "I'm afraid I don't carry much in way of spears, but maybe a stone will do."
Picks up the first large rock he can find, and gives it a toss.
11+2=13 (Guessing that's miss by comparison)
Grins sheepishly as he speaks:"Hmmm...perhaps if you could pick a larger target next time...say a barn"
Jessa Ventris |
Jessa tuts, "C'mon. kiddies, let's get a move on! Next thing y'know, you'll be gettin' yer swords out to see who has the biggest chopper."
She catches up to Erion, "Now, are y'sure about this, Erion? I mean, I feel I need to go there too an' all... but I dunno why. Cauldron? It don't sound too welcoming, bein' in a volcano and that; but if y' think that's where we should be, I trust y'."
Erion Gilor |
Having largely ignored the antics of the 'children' as Jessa put it for a while, he turned a genuine smile her way. "Welcoming? No. Interesting? Most certainly." He replied, seeking to assure her. "I promised my father I would look in on our holdings, and seek a new steward for him, and I have promised to protect you. Thus, off we go." The pair had trudged through this discussion several times, but despite that, Erion knew she would follow him anyway - just as she knew that he would always help her, any way he could.
"I think that poor stump has had quite enough, don't you, Stilgar?" He asked their savage companion, his amber eyes sweeping the small group surrounding the unoffending stump. "If my estimations are correct, we're less than a week away from Couldron. Provided we keep a good pace, of course." He said, widening the targets of his words to encompass the game-players.
Admonishing over, he continued to walk along the road, Jessa by his side. It was strange - whilst out here, with these people, wandering the world, he barely missed the quiet study that he'd all but been forced from.
Lol. Can you tell we want to play already? And that we have an absolutely rocking group? Go team us!
Erion Gilor |
I know what you mean. I used to make cookie-cutter characters until about lvl 4-5, as I hated having cool characters die too soon. I guess we'll just have to play smart.
So Flamifur, do we have an ESD?* (Estimated Start Date)
EDIT: I've just updated my description slightly, and I've added the extra cash that I have to my possessions.

I'm waiting for Eichendar to finish his character. When that's done I need to work out a few bit's n pieces based on your collective character backgrounds, etc. And then we'll be off.
We're already off buy the looks of this 'discussion' thread :)
I'f we haven't started by Monday I'll be surprised - as long as you guys can wait that long !!!
Actually, just to get things moving and make sure everyone is ok with using Invisible Castle, I'd like you all to make one gather information check to see what rumours and scuttlebut you've heard about Cauldron.
Jessa Ventris |
Point and laugh time! Talkin' to people, enjoying the craic (1d20+3=4)
Jessa's too busy having a laugh whenever they stop anywhere - let the rest of them chase rumours and whatnot; she'll get some ale and have a good time.

Gather INfo Check -- test (1d20=4)
Nik skips off to get his pack. "Let me fill up my waterskin. I'll catch up."

Wow. Interesting rolls.
I'm working on a number of big posts to start us off tonight/tomorrow (depending on where in the world you are) so keep you eye's for the Gaming thread soon.
I'll post the results of your successful gather info rolls in this thread before starting the other - not that there'll be much to post ;)
Eichendar I need you to post a little bit of background/description for Zoo asap - it'll help with some 'surprises' I'm working on.

Hi Guys
Here's what you all know about Cauldron:
- Small City built inside an extinct volcano.
- Located about 100 miles inland of the Port City of Sasserine. Sasserine is situated at the very southernmost shore of Jeklea Bay in the World of Greyhawk, where the Hellfurnaces (mountains) meet the Amedio Jungle.
- Founded over 500 years ago by a Wizard known as Surabar.
- Elected authority in the town is held by Lord Mayor Severen Navalant.
- Nominally Part of the domain of the Sea Princes or the Sea Princes' territory seized by the Scarlet Brotherhood during the Greyhawk Wars. However, has a military 'agreement' with The Kingdom of Keoland.
- Most of it's wealth comes from the plantations and mines of the area and towns around it. Rumour has it that there are countless ruined enclaves and dungeons beneath it.
- The southernmost city in the Flanaess. Despite the city being quite populous and cosmopolitan the area around it is true frontier land.

Flamifur any hints as to useful favored enemies? Animals make the most sense for young Nik. Also, IS the Greyhawk pantheon Obad Hai, Falargn (sp?) , Wee Jas etc. Nik should have a loose connection to a neutral nature type deity, and one with an interest in travel.
Sorry, Just realised I had never answered this question. Radavel answered the Pantheon part.
Animal would be a good general choice. However, I always allow ranger characters to choose their first favoured enemy after the campaign has started but before gaining a level - then you get to make a more relevant choice. You are constrained to choosing a type or organisation you've encountered in play and will have to spend a day or two doing research but they're the only drawbacks.
Hope this helps.

Further Information for Zoomackulas Eyes only:
One source you spoke to in Gradsul said they were so powerful (and so sure of their power) they even minted their own coin and he claimed had one or two to prove it ! But he never turned up for your arranged meeting and further, noone had seen hide nor hair of him buy the time you left the port.
However, despit their size and underground reputation, you have been unable to find out any more about them.

Further Information Erion's eyes only:
Your research into Cauldron before leaving home brought little to the surface. One thing you did learn from an old gnomish family retainer, Barrulke, was that a Gnomish Enclave once existed beneath the City but was abandoned many years ago in a hurry. Some great evil seems to have befallen the inhabitants of 'Johodrun' and it was evacuated in a matter of days leaving behind a vast store of magic items and a arcane library of a size unrivaled in the City. Barrulke didn't know what the disaster was but apparently several families of Gnomes 'vanished' !
Finally, before you left you were warned by an elder of your house not to stray to close to an area know as 'The Demonskar'. Of old a terrible evil resided there, a Demon Prince, and the area is still tainted with his spawn.

Ok, any questions of any sort before we get going ? Post 'em and I'll answer them first thing in the morning.
I'm going to start the campaign with you guys landing at the Port of Sasserine so you've spent a few weeks on a ship together. Feel free to chat a bit more in character (I'm keen to know how Zoomackulas joins the group - and what his speech is like!) on this thread and then head over to the gaming thread when you're done.
Oh yeah, you'll probably need to wait until I've created the gaming thread - silly me !

Nik spends the first hours of the voyage gazing back at the shore and watching the sailor's practice their arcane art. But as the landmarks fade and the repetitive nature of the waves asserts itself, he falls fitfully asleep on a bundle of sailcloth beside the windward rail.
Nik must be making a trip this long for a good reason. Maybe to notify a family member of a death in the family.
Jessa Ventris |
Jessa turns to see Nik glowering ineffectually, "Now, what're y' doin' there? Have y' got indigestion or somethin'?" She asks sarcastically, "Don't worry abou' me, I look after meself." she adds.
I love the intro! It's like Greyhawk mixed with Chronicles of Amber = cool. So excited now.

Stilgar was about to make another grab for the pesky bird, when his face suddenly turned a disturbing shade of green and again off over the side of the ship he goes...throwing up.
Seeing that this imposing new friend seems a bit "weak in the knees", I offer him some salt-bread (really more a hard-tack cracker). Hopefully it will steady his stomach.
"Here, neighbor...try this. There's an old Marcher saying,'saltbread may taste like a rock, but it'll stay in your gullet.'

"Thanks, kiddo, y'r a sweetheart, 'Knicker-less'" she says patting his cheek and grinning, "But I got the measure o' him, I reckon. Seems harmless enough. And if not, I gotta surprise for 'im, sure."
Turning to see what Jessa and Nik are referring, I notice the wiry, scarred man staring at them. There was a short time ago, I would have guessed ill-intent from that man - no question. But Heironeous, guide me...I'm not sure that's the case.
I stare at him intently for a moment, but my vision seems to show nothing of evil intent, at least.
How's that for a quick 'detect evil' check?
"How did I know that," I mumble.
"If it matters much, Miss Jessa - I think you are quite right concerning that fellow over there...I'm pretty sure he means us no harm."

That's right! No effeminate knickers for Nik, but leather pants --oh yeah!
Of course given the technology and cash available to him its either leather or wool. He really doesn't have much choice.
