I overestimated the strength of my position and Veren's usefulness in protecting Naelah from just such a situation as she finds herself in now (I thought he might get an AoO from a gobbo going past). I saw an opportunity to foil the gobbos plans in what could've been a cool way, but over-extended myself in the process ... My mediocre dice rolls aren't helping, either.

The good thing about PbP's I'm discovering is that we don't get bogged down during the game in loooooong strategy discussions.
The BAD side is that those talks always helped us beat things like this in what seemed like an easier way.
BUT, this is much more 'realistic' and exciting. So take your pick.

(Of course I like to limit the realism in my FANTASY games!)

These are honestly the most dangerous goblins I've ever fought... er... one of my characters has ever fought... yes, not me. I never fight goblins.

True, but keep in mind that not wearing armor cost Ehlissa in the first fight. If the crit didn't confirm, I think she would have taken 4 less damage.

So far, the gobbos have hit Malcolm with a charge-flank, Ehlissa with a flank, and Naelah with a flank. The only PC who has been hit straight up is Vesh. They have missed at least 4 attacks straight up. So they are like 3/3 on flanks and 1/5 at most otherwise.

It is tough, but I've upped the XP a bit. I think for the PbP format it is appropriate to have fewer encounters to level up because running the encounters is logistically more intensive and time consuming than role-playing.

Well, now its payback time. You should be able to set a flank with Veren in the next round.

Yes, I see your point about the nature of combat in PbPs - it's a good one. And Rags is right about not getting bogged down in strategy.

I agree. Role-playing should always be more important that roll-playing. I have to say, however, that I enjoy the tactical aspect of the game quite a bit. It's like a complex game of chess, and each time I participate in D&D combat as a player, I learn something new.

On another note, I've kind of taken the reins on rolling for Naelah this combat. It's not really something that I want to do long-term, though. Has anyone heard from PsionicFox? I thought that PsiFox's posts were very well written, and I miss the unique quality they lent to Naelah as a character.

If PsiFox does not return, do we have a backup plan?

That's all I've got. My stout is bubbling away! Go ale yeast! I'm going back to the re-run of the Oregon v. USC game. Go Ducks!

Hopefully it won't come to this, but I doubt it would be hard to recruit another PbP player if necessary. Usually the applicants far outweigh the open spots.

I have internet access at the moment (and will until Thursday afternoon) so is it alright if I post as Malcolm while I have internet? He'll be back from the armory in round 6 correct?
I hope we don't have to replace Naelah but if we do I'm sure we can find someone.

Please do. I think the current fight should be over this round, meaning he will return very soon after the fight ends. I'll leave the choice of ranged weapon and embellishment of your acquisition thereof to you. Malcolm needs to interact with the other PCs - he's the only one who hasn't been introduced to at least one other party member. So this will be a good opportunity.

Cool. I'll post once this battle is over.

Probably,

In truth, a Nutria DOES look like a cross between a beaver and a rat. :P
They tend to live in the bayous and canals of Louisiana. Including in towns and cities, where they become a problem with no predators to thin them out.

And yes, in the 'outlying' areas, they are still considered fair game for eating! :) (YUM!?!)

Forget Texas. "Louisiana, it's like a whole other country. We got people who speak in a language you cain't unnerstand, and we eat things that MOST people would call an exterminator for!" (Boiled Crawfish [Crayfish, Crtawdads, etc.] are GOOD!)

Arctaris wrote:

I vote for giving PsiFox a chance. Does anyone remember if PsiFox posted an email address here?

Also, seeing as we've got some fresh weapons and some healing going on from good ol' Father Zantus, I suspect that there are still some gobbos out there waiting to be killed.

How are we going to handle Malcolm's absence after Thursday? As fast as this last combat went, it started on Wednesday, more or less, and covered 50-plus posts. That means, if we start the next encounter soon, we'll lose Malcolm before we're done. Without Malcolm, Naelah, and Veren, we're a little short-handed.
-------------------------
Edit: I'm out for the evening and won't have my laptop. In an effort to interact with the real world, I am not posting again until the late morning.

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

I don't recall if he posted an email. I'm also all for giving him a chance, I just wanted to know.
After Thursday I don't mind if someone NPCs me while I'm away, as long as that isn't a problem for anyone. I might be able to post on Friday or Saturday for a short while. Also, after this Thursday it'll be 11 days before I return to my regular posting schedule.

I threw out a shout-out to PsionicFox on the Gamer Connection thread. We'll see if we get an answer.

Happy Halloween y'all!

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Everyone have a good Halloween?
We scared the crap out of trick-or-treaters before giving them their candy, ate way too much chocolate, and then played D&D until past midnight.
It looks like my posting time today will be cut short and the friend who's internet we are sometimes borrowing is having trouble with his internet.

We had fun, too. My wife has stayed up way too late the last week making 3-D Lightning McQueen and Thomas costumes for our sons. And then she had to do a faerie for our daughter.

But we probably had close to 100 kids come by - most actually in costume. Now that that is done, we just have to clean up the wreckage that the house has become...

Arctaris, it would be great if you could just quickly post Malcolm's intent for the next combat. Then I (or someone else) can handle his rolls. I've drawn up the map so there should be some legitimate tactical options besides the straight ahead bum rush.

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

I was going as a pirate but no matter what I did I looked too respectable so I ended up going as the Very Respectable Merchant.
Oh, and we got our elf drunk and he ended up marrying Shayliss (I've handed over the DMing of the RL RotRL campaign I was running to someone else so I could play).
Tactics: Is there a way I can get up on the roof of one of those buildings? If so I'll climb up there to gain the benefits of higher ground and hopefully cover. From there I'll fire my crossbow into the goblins below. If at least two of my companions go down I'll jump down and go into melee with the gobbos. If reduced to 2 hp I retreat and snipe them off with my crossbow.

If reduced to 2 hp I retreat and snipe them off with my crossbow.

The eave height is about 10 feet so it will require two move actions to climb to the roof at quarter speed. Based on the SRD, the DC for climbing the house will be 17 (somewhere between how they describe DCs 15 and 20). Traversing the pitched roof will require a DC 10 balance check. Failure does not mean that you fall; only that you can take a single move action that round.

So what I see is:

Round 1: Move to wall. Begin climbing (move action; Climb DC 17)
Round 2: Finish climbing (move action; Climb DC 17). Traverse roof (move action; Balance DC 10)
Round 3: Drop Prone (swift). Fire (standard). Reload (move).

Once on the roof you will have cover from ranged attacks if you lie prone at the edge of the roof. However, you will not be able to make ranged attacks against targets within 2 squares of the wall without standing up (losing cover). You can make a Stealth check to Hide while you have cover and get your sneak attack bonus. However, add two squares to the "flat" range to determine if the target is within 6 squares for sneak attack damage to apply.

I will post a map update showing what Veran sees in about an hour.

EDIT
I just realize Malcolm has a grappling hook. If he is carrying it, that is.

Setting the Grappling hook requires a DC 16 Use Rope check (throwing it 15 feet). If the hook is set, the climb DC is reduced to 5 (or 10 if you climb at double speed).

So, by throwing the hook (std. action) and double speed climb, you can reach the roof at the end of the first round. Then you can move, drop, and fire on the second round.

Round 1: set hook (Use Rope DC 16); climb (DC 10).
Round 2: move (Balance DC 10); drop (swift); fire (standard).

I think it's only worth getting up there if you can shoot by R2, and that really depends on where the buggers are and what they're up to!

Also, let's remember some good advice...

JSL wrote:

One thing to consider, if you don't mind me saying, is that when only one or two of you beats the goblins in initiative, delay or ready actions so they have to go first. Especially from range - they are really worthless at range and will try to close. They are also stupid and I've been making honest effort to have at least one goblin do something sub-optimal each round.

BTW, No bites on my PsionicFox shout out yet. Except for Fabes, that is!

The grapplinbg hook is still in my room. There was no reason to bring it to the festival.
I'll climb up on the roof. If everyone is getting messed up badly by a goblin I can't reach with my crossbow, I'll jump down and go into melee.

Hello all
I'm looking for an empty slot in a PbP. If someone drops out, could you consider me? I'm currently playing this campain with another group, but we haven't gotten too far.

Dark Archive

Shantare's post (thanks for writing, Shantare) brings to mind that we haven't really decided what to do a/b PsiFox. I put up a shout-out yesterday in the Gamer Connection forum, and I think we should give that a couple of days, but how long are we going to wait?

I know it would be such a bummer to lose Naelah, who is such a cool character, but I don't think that we should wait for too long after this current battle is over to replace her. We desperately need a divine spellcaster, and Veren wasn't too shabby to have around, either.

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Naehlah was pretty cool and it would be a shame to lose her. My suggestion would be too give PsiFox until the goblin raid is over to post. That probably won't be for a week or so it would give him plenty of time to responds. Just my two coppers.
After this I don't know when my next posting opportunity will be.

Arctaris wrote:

I agree. There will be a natural break in the action in about a week at our current pace. That will give us a moment to reassess and invite another player if necessary. Shantare will be our first alternate.

@Shantare: are you willing to play a divine caster? or at least someone who can hack their way around a wand of cure light?

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

PsiFox is back it would seem.

Female Human (Shoanti) Druid 3, Sorcerer 1 6,000 XP

Aye, I have returned.

Its a long story. (A really long story). Involving disgruntled colleagues, threats, police action, removing his access to the system, that sort of thing.

So yes, I have returned.

What did I miss? I'll start catching up on what has gone on in my absence.

Female Human (Shoanti) Druid 3, Sorcerer 1 6,000 XP

Some of you will see a post much like this in another game I play on the Paizo forums, but I'll (sort of) repeat it here.

I'd like to thank you all for your patience, understanding, and concerns for my wellbeing and I'd like to say that there is only one other game (Thank you Flamifur) I have ever taken part in that fills me with such a joy when I see the group interacting. From Slidell's inability to stay silent for long (and apparent budding attraction?), to jumpy Vesh (again with the attraction?), to brave and stoic Ehlissa, to our knowledgeable woodsman, Corran, and our tricky Malcom, and lets not forget our wonderful DM JSL, you are an incredible group.

Not just an amazing group of players and people - but a gifted team of writers. Because that's what this is - a team of writers, coming together and making a story. We just happen to have dice to make things interesting.

It is my fervent hope that we will continue to play for some time (perhaps even running the gamut of the RotRL AP), and that when the curtain closes on our adventures together, that each of you will look back, and remember an eclectic group of players and characters that stuck it through think and thin, a group of very different, and yet somehow similar, people from all over the world, - and remember the journey we once embarked upon together.

To the members of this group, each and every one of you, I thank you.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled Discussion thread.

Dark Archive

HOLY COW! YOU'RE BACK!!!

I am overjoyed to see that you are back and are doing well. I second the statements you made above--whole heartedly agree! If we make it through all of RotRL together, we will have done something extraordinary.

I could go on (and on, and on), but I'll stop by saying 'welcome back.'

Female Human (Shoanti) Druid 3, Sorcerer 1 6,000 XP

Great to have you back. Naelah and Veren will show up on the next map update - pending Vesh and the goblins.

Tactically your return really helps the party. Otherwise, Vesh was going to have to choose between helping Corran and Ehlissa or Slidell and Malcolm. Now he can go left with no fear since Veren should be a match for two goblins.

In other words, you guys are lucky. I had a good set-up to take someone out! :)

Hey, here's something I'm curious about.

I got the Hook Mtn. download the other day, but haven't had a chance to look through it. It seems from the threads in the Pathfinder RotRL discussion that some of the content might implicitly or explicity step beyond the typical PG-13ish rating.

Now I'm not really a prudish person, but I do have some strong beliefs regarding the type of media I allow into my home. I have small kids, so they are likely to find it and I need to be mindful of that.

Also, I am all in favor of a good, well writen, well conceived story and will tolerate some vulgarity *if* it serves that purpose and serves it well. However, I have found with recent media offerings (games, movies, etc.) that good story-telling has been all but replaced by graphic violence.

Apologists for this form of "story-telling" often think it is cool or edgy to include such mature content (to the point of clammoring on these very boards for more of it). It is as if they see the only way to distinguish children from adults is by a willingness to tolerate filth. Afterall, they say, there's plenty of bad stuff in the world (true), so by including that in our product we are making it more real (true), and because it is more real, it is also better (an illogical conclusion).

Now I have two things to say to this.

First of all, D&D went through a long period where it was held up by a religious minority as an example of devil worship. However, most of these folks have moved on to crusade against something else - namely degenerate music, movies, and video games. I do not care to have my D&D game sink to that level just because someone thinks that "mature" content is cool. Nor do I care to have D&D again associated with inappropriate content. The irony, is that this time, the association might be deserved.

Second, there is enough bad stuff going on in the world that if I wanted to read about murder, torture, and mass sexual assault, I would look up news articles about the Congo, Darfur, S. Africa, Iraq, etc. I am normally very aware of and tuned into what is going on in the world and I play games like this to escape from it - not participate in it.

To my mind, D&D has never needed to, and will never need to compete with "Grand Theft Auto", "Hostel", or misogynistic rap music for my entertainment dollar. And the instant the publishers think that it needs to, they will no longer have my business.

I'm saying this here because it would not be safe to say it in a more topical forum. You know what I mean. Also, I wanted to get some feedback on my views and see how badly I'm in the minority. :)

I don't see this affecting our campaign for quite some time, if at all. Like I said, I haven't had a chance to read through Hook Mtn. yet and will reserve final judgement until I have.

On one side not, I lament that a few months ago I saw two threads - in one a father was teaching his kids how to play D&D with Burnt Offerings and another an inner-city HS game group had adopted the AP for the year - I suspect that if the content in Hook Mtn. is as other threads imply, those groups will move on to something else.

Shadow Lodge

Male Human (Sometimes) Gamer/Writer/Husband

@JSL's post (see above):

I agree with you on many points there, but on the same token, I feel there is a great difference between violence for violence's sake, and a gritty, mature setting or adventure (think of the difference between a gory movie [like Saw], and a good pulp novel or something).

One of the things I am really enjoying about this setting is that in so many ways it would be easy to go "We no longer have to play by Wizard's rules, so we can do whatever we want!", and thus just go totally overboard. Instead, they have proved to us their talent for making a ‘game for juveniles’ as one of my parents once put it, into a serious and moving game. There is one point in this AP that is forthcoming (I won’t mention which bit – but it really stuck in my brain), that gave me the chills when I read it. I think that having mature content is fine as long as you handle it in a mature manner. Deciding to have an orgy or bloodbath in your game because you can doesn’t sit well with me – but show me the story that uses such things in a mature manner, and I’ll bow to your wisdom.

Male Human - dash of elf Miniature painter/ Heroic

I don't object to 'mature' themes, I just think it's silly when overdone. Sorry if anyone's a fan, but I felt the Scuttlecove adventure in the sealed section in Dungeon that came out when BoVD was released was incredibly silly. It was so OTT in its 'vile' content that I would never run it 'as is' not because I was disgusted but because it was so crazily obsessed with being 'bad'.

So, I hope we can run through Hook Mnt. in some form. I think D&D, purely from its source material; Conan, Fafhrd and Grey Mouser, Elric etc has a tendancy to relish the juxtaposition (note, not the combination) of the erotic with the violent. And looking at my character, I've just noticed that I've done exactly that... a beautiful woman who also happens to be very good at sword-fighting...

We're an odd species. Or, I'm an odd person.

No problems here JSL, I completely agree.
In my (mis?)-spent youth I was both the VICTIM of the 'anti-D&D' tirade, (from my own mother no less!) AND I was part of the 80's christian 'that is bad!' brigade.
Note- I do not regret my participation in said brigade. I believe what I believe, and I was standing up for it with youthful enthusiasm. HOWEVER, I DO wish I had been better informed. It has come to my attention is recent years that, like D&D, a lot of the things I crusaded against were not as bad as potrayed by our leaders. (Unlike some of the things I see today! DON"T get me started on that in this thread! I would like to keep my new friends!)

You also quoted ME almost verbatim. I have ALWAYS said that I play D&D (and other games) to ESCAPE reality, not participate in it. If I want 'reality', or to see people hurting each other, I'll go watch the news.

As far as the content in the newest, I havent downloaded it yet. (Busy at work, didn't even know it was available!) But, I mean c'mon,...'Mature Content'?!? Will SOMEone please explain to me what is so 'mature' about vile or graphic descriptions of evil deeds?
(Side note- I glanced once at the 'mature content' of the WotC "evil Handbook', or whatever it was. There were some cool spells in there. All they had to do was remove the flavor text and replace it with something more tasteful, and viola'! no more 'mature'. Perfectly usuable for anybody.)
Sigh- Sorry, I ramble in face to face conversations too.
Point- WHY do people ffeel the need to make things gross? In Dark Sun the Sorcerer-Kings killed thousands of people to fuel thier ascension into Dragon-Kings. But at NO POINT did I ever hear of anybody feeling they had to describe those gruesome deaths. Individually OR collectively. Dragon-kings were bad, you had to try and stop them. Pure and simple.

OK, cutting my self short here. I agree with all the above posts. ( More or less, mostly more.)
I also have young children in my house, and I was hoping to start teaching my 8 year old daughter to play D&D soon. If/when I get the time, I will probably NOT use this AP to introduce her to the game. I found the goblins funny, but what I hear about the skinsaw murders, and now the newest, No matter how much you 'dumb' something down, certain things are simply not acceptable to expose young minds to.

We NOW return you to your regularly scheduled discussion thread,...

Yeah, I call that one the "Book of Mild Dorkness" for a reason. It is, as Fabes said, just trying to hard to be bad so it can be edgy. Like some tattooed, pierced goth person who you know is really a wimp with a high GPA. I can just hear WotC's developers now: "Let's have some half-naked drow chicks torturing people in sexually suggestive poses - just like we always fantasized they would do to us."

But it seems we are largely on the same page. Another thing I did not mention earlier is that because this game is taking place on a public board and theoretically anything we post can be traced back to us as individuals, I will keep the descriptions and flavor around the PG-13 benchmark with perhaps a couple of moderate exceptions as the story warrants.

Yes, it looks like this group is pretty much in general agreement, at least on this issue. (Yay us!) I am perfectly happy to have you keep it in the PG-13 range. Again, if I want to 'see' a horror show, I'll rent a Freddie video. Otherwise, let's kick some bad-guy bootie! (How THAT for G-rated?!?)

;P

Dark Archive

Hi JSL and the group,

First, I want to say thanks for bringing this up. I think that these issues are important to think and talk about. I appreciate you sharing your concerns.

I responded late last night with a more thorough response but lost the post before I could submit it. I didn't have it in me to recreate it and still don't. Suffice it to say, I agree with the sensibilities presented by our group here.

I, too, like grit and darkness in my fantasy. However, to mistake vulgarity with grit and darkness speaks more to the diminished state of storytelling in popular culture, and the under-appreciation of literature in general, that I find in many of my contemporaries and in many young people that I interact with.

Fritz Leiber, a favorite of mine, is a prime example of how to integrate grit, darkness, and eroticism in the fantasy genre without resorting to the gratuitous violence or vulgarity found in the Book of Vile Darkness, as noted by others in our group.

I sincerely hope that the industry as a whole, and Paizo specifically, think twice before going too far in the "mature content" direction with their products.

Thanks again, JSL.

Question,
I've gotten myself confused about AoO's.
If you close with an enemy, and take more than 5' step to get within melee range, do you draw an AoO? The earlier charges/closing into melee range didn't seem to do that?
I considered going and trying to help out in the alley battle, but thought that I would draw an AoO from the goblin as I closed into range. (It would have been a 2 or 3 square move to end up next to him.)

Color me confused, just trying to clarify.
Thanks,

Thanks,

Moving *out* of a threatened square causes an AoO, not moving *into* one. Note that moving from one threatened square to another causes an AoO because you moved out of the first square, not because you moved into the second. Of course, a 5' step *never* causes an AoO in and of itself.

Sorry for my truncated posts on the game thread as of late. I've been on the road for work and have only been able to post from the odd coffee shop or late at night after the kiddos go down.

In that vein, my wife, kiddos, and I are using the Veteran's Day weekend as an excuse to get out of town and go to the coast. The house that we're staying in does not have an internet connection that I am aware of, but I may bring my lappy so that I can look like a snob in a cafe or something. The most likely scenario is that I won't be posting until Monday night at the earliest. Just when the fun role-playing stuff starts up again!!!

Have fun, but save some for Vesh!!!
