done...wow, that was awesome...now to get started on the outline...just in case.
Likewise. ~35 encounters need to be defined and listed, so I'm just brainstorming and writing cool ideas down as I think of them.
I don't think I'll actually write up the outline unless I get picked (and we don't have the exact format yet) but it certainly doesn't hurt to start thinking about it.
And I already did a rough statblock for my new monsters, because I think I'll use them in my home game regardless.

Best be quick everyone.
The window for the first round closes in 1 hour and 25 minutes by the clock on my computer (and that is the only one that matters).
If there is a big scottish guy with blue facepaint standing next to you screaming "hold... HOLD..." this would be the point where he screams "NOW!"
Good Luck.

Submitted mine at about 10:15. So unless the internet drops a bomb on me, I should be good. But my bits only need to get from Redmond to Bellevue, so that's probably in my favor.
The real problem with contests like this is not that my submission needs to be good enough, it's that my submission needs to be better than all but nine of yours. I'm a first-time submitter, so I don't have to tell you that the competition is daunting.
The rules state that all submissions become the property of Paizo. Does this mean that if I am not selected to continue, I won't be allowed to share my idea? It would be interesting to have the unfortunate rest of us share our ideas here to see what we could have done better.

Just remember that everyone who submits stuff had to start somewhere and that they probably got shot down that first time around (most acceptance rates for Dungeon ran somewhere between 6-10% of the total queries submitted depending on whether or not there was a Adventure Path running that year). On the other hand, there are a number of one-shot novel authors whose work has become canon to their genre, so I guess the moral is that if you really want it, and you're willing to work at it, chances are good you'll get it.
Good luck everyone.
May all your bits make it in one piece.

I just started visiting Paizo's boards a few days ago, so I didn't get the chance to jump into the competition. Is Paizo likely to offer anything similar in the near future?
They have said yes, but the surprise announcement of 4th Edition D&D has sort of goofed up the schedule, so they don't know when yet.

I think they said in the other open call thread that "open calls are very likely to continue." Something like that.
I think they do a lot of good for the company. Good press, site traffic, and customers appreciate the participation element, even if they don't make it in.

So, how long do the Paizo folk expect the 'thinning' process to take before they select the top ten? 2 days? A week? 2 weeks?
A few days. We're hoping to compare notes maybe as early as this afternoon, but much more likely tomorrow.

We're hoping for one a year or so.

I'm surprised that you're going to be ready so quickly. I suppose editors must learn to read pretty quickly, but at 2 pages/query and a few hundred queries to read, I can't imagine having read them all by now, let alone figuring out the ten best.

Here's a secret about being an editor: You don't read every word of every submission. You find a reason to stop reading and then you... stop reading...

Doh! I knew I shouldn't have put all the crappy bits near the beginning ... I mean .... what crappy bits?
lol
That's actually one of the reasons people who give advice on writing tell you to put all your very best ideas into the first paragraph/page/chapter (depending the on the length of your submission). At least make the editor read to the second para/pa/cha before he makes his decision... ;)

Even once it makes it past the editing stage, into the final product. The number of books I've put down 'cos I couldn't make it through the <yawn> first few chapters...

By compare notes, do you mean that each query was read by all three of you?

I would just like to second other sentiments I've seen on the various Open Call threads - when the final 10 are selected, I would really appreciate a Blog post or even a small post by one of the Paizo boys about common things they noticed, mistakes that turned them off immediately, tips for a better submission for the next Open Call, pet peeves, etc.
It would be really helpful and much appreciated.

No. As early as tomorrow (but more likely Thursday) we'll all sit down in a room together and present our favorite 10 or so from the 50 we read. Then we'll go through those 30 together and figure out the 10 or so who advance to round 2.

Yes, helps us to produce better queries and you to get better queries.
A Win-Win situation!

MM: *rolls* "4."
JB: "...awesome! I'll let the lucky winner know!"
JW: "Aren't we going to, you know, read them to see which one is best?"
JB: "Psht! No. We don't have time for that stuff. Get back to work!"

I've got mine in my head and I'm gonna work on submitting it now.
EDIT: Gah! I just now realized that we're supposed to write the module that they've given us the summary for. I just thought that was an example. I'm back to square one now. :(
Uhh...you do know that submissions are closed, right? :O

Am I the only one who keeps hitting refresh just in case some news appears?
Ok, back to reading Skinsaw Murders...

Good gracious, Paizo friends! I know that your schedule is hectic, and I respect that time can fly by, and that your jobs are more than just reading open calls, and that you have lives outside the office and that there are other bills to pay and that there can be emergencies that take up your time and that there are so many other things, Pathfinder (James et al), editing (Mike) distributing, GameMastery and so many other things, but I mean come on!
