Anything I should roll for this?

Nah, you should be able to avoid cutting off a finger :)

Between Greywulf and Magpie, you manage to find a decent campsite. But their hunting doesn't seem to be turning much up. Luckily you all bought rations (you did, didn't you?), and Kai has managed to get a decent fire going.

Male Dwarf Cleric 1

" I will take first watch, and will move off about 10m from the group to find a good spot

Yep I have 6 days rations :)

"I will take second watch. Wake me when I am needed."

Kai sits near the fire for a while, munching on a portion of hardtack from his rations while apparently in deep contemplation. Once finished with his meal, he continues sitting there motionless for some time, then moves off to go to sleep.

Male Human Barbarian 1

Using Survival d20+5=14 and Trapmaking d20+5=17 Does Greywulf find anything?

When Greywulf returns he says, "I'll take the last watch I suppose."

Male Human Druid / 1

Magpie rolls himself up in his bedroll muttering "Wake me when I'm needed" and, after a few minutes of dry coughing, falls asleep. Vorax, certain that Magpie is asleep, disappears off into the woodland in search of a meal.

Greywulf: You manage to catch a small rabbit in the woods. It cooks up pretty good, definently makes the trail rations taste better :)

Kai: During your watch you hear the sounds of movement just up the path. You just have time to draw your weapon when 3trappers stumble in to view. It's hard to tell who is more surprised, but one of them sputters out (slurring his words slightly) "Hey, what do we have hear? Quiet, or you'll scare the game away."

Male Human Druid / 1

Listen check to wake up when trappers arrive:

Listening whilst asleep ! (1d20+5-10=2)

With a loud snore Magpie rolls over and then settles once more.

Still brandishing his blade and eying the trappers suspiciously, Kai says slowly, "We have made no noise to bother the animals."

Kai Renyu wrote:

As they moves closer, you smell the strong scent of moonshine on the breath of all three men. "Ok, but make sure you keep it that way. You wanna drink?" he says as he offers you grimy, half filled bottle.

Kai shakes his head. "No, thank you."

"Ok" He replies. "Let's go guys. No use hunting here anymore, I bet these guys have scared off most of the game anyway. Let's get going." With that the three of them move off and leave you to finish you watch in peace.

The rest of the night passes uneventfully. In the "morning" (if you can call it that, it is hard to tell under the thick canopy), you break camp after a breakfast of trail rations supplemented by left over rabbit stew. It is about 9am or so by the time you head out.

After another couple of hours of travel, as you draw near to the lake, can you all make listen checks please?

DC 16:

Spoiler:
You can hear the whimpering of an animal, obviously in pain, coming from the direction of the Lake.

Male Human Barbarian 1

Listen check d20 + 5 = 12

Greywulf is too busy speaking with one of the others in the group to hear anything it seems.

Male Human Druid / 1

Magpie Listen Check (1d20+5=17)

"Be Careful. There's something up ahead of us and it seems to be in pain. I could sneak ahead to check it out?"

Magpie listen's intently to the noise trying to recognise what creature is making the sound and if it's genuine. Knowledge Nature ? Know. Nature (1d20+7=19) Any Good ?

Male Dwarf Cleric 1

Estra Listen Check (1+2=3) (ears must be ringing for Kai's snoreing)

"Hun what did you hear? Looking nerviously into the woods with his crosbow ready"

Listen Check (1d20+1=18)

Kai puts his hand onto the hilt of his katana. "That sound... is quite unsettling."
Responding to Magpie, he says, "Yes. I think at least one of us should go see what it is."

Magpie: You recognise the sound as the whimpering (wit hthe occasional yelp) of a small canine animal. It appears to be genuinely in pain.

"Should I sneak ahead and find out what it is?" I whisper.

Male Human Barbarian 1

"Be wary however, for I have laid traps such as this before. But only for smaller game."

Male Human Druid / 1

After saying what he thinks is making the noise Magpie puts down his shield and pack, grabs his spear and peers ahead up the path. Spot anything up the path ? (1d20+5=24) .

"I'll go look. I'll go no more than 100 feet and come back the way I came - if anything comes back on the path, it's not me. I'll shout for Vorax if in trouble." To Arianna: "I'll go right side of Path, you go left." To Vorax: "Stay !"Handle Animal (1d20+8=24)

If he see's nothing (which I'm assuming) he'll then move off right of the trail until in some kind over cover and then start moving parallel to the path looking for the source of the sound.

Move Silenty (1d20+5=20)
Hide (1d20+5=18)

Listen and Spot if they're needed again:

Listen (1d20+5=6)
Spot (1d20+5=10)

After those rolls I hope they're not !

Kai readies an action to move to aid one of them if they shout out for help.

I nod and follow Magpies instructions, moving stealthily up the path and staying alert for any danger. Tendrils of arcane energy curl around my fingers and I can feel the power well up inside of me, begging to be let out, to be used and bent to my will. The thrill of power from the arcane energies and then adrenaline from the possibility of danger make me a little to hasty as I search for danger and it disctracts me as I try to listen for the sounds of a threat. I have my dagger drawn in one hand.
Move Silently 15 Listen and Spot, respectively 2 and 9

OK, I think you guys slightly misinterpreted what I said. The whimpering is not coming from up the path, but off to the side towards the lake as you are skirting around the edge of the lake.

Magpie and Arianna head off towards the lake to check out the noise. You travel about 20 feet or so through the undergrowth, and come to the edge of the tree line. Not far from the edge of the forest-shrouded lake, a fox with large ears and bright orange fur lies bleeding, its hindquarters caught fully in the jaws of a crude iron trap.

Its about 20 feet from you to the fox, straight ahead, and the fox is about 10 feet from the shore of the lake.

Male Human Druid / 1

Before he realises just how suspicious the situation is, Magpie erupts from the undergrowth with a flurry of leaves, he darts across to the Fox and if possible, picks it and the trap up and carries it both into the bushes near to where he thinks Arianna is. However if the Fox looks too injured to be moved (I'm thinking negative HP here) he'll try to help it with with a Cure Minor Wounds.

I get the feeling I've just pressed the 'bad stuff happens to Magpie' button but what else could I do ? :)

I stay hidden in the bushes, ready to blast any foes in the area with my arcane powers. "Let him get himself killed. It will draw the enemies out into range for me." I think with a smile as I anticipate the coming use of my arcane talents.

Magpie wrote:

Close, but it should be alright. And as you said, what esle could you do?

As Magpie darts from the undergrowth, an arrow bounces off his armor. Looking at where it came from, he sees a Hobgoblin hiding in a tree about 50 feet to the northeast, and 2 Razorcrows flying towards him.

Can everyone roll Initiative, Listen and Spot checks. If you haven't posted by the time I check back in the morning, I'll roll for you.

Male Dwarf Cleric 1

1d20+1-> [9,1] = (10) Initiative
1d20+2-> [18,2] = (20) Listen
1d20+2-> [5,2] = (7) Spot

Magpie's Spot (1d20+5=21)
Magpie's Listen (1d20+5=7)

Listen check d20 + 5 = 22
Spot check d20 + 1 = 3

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to this. I got distracted by study for an exam on friday arvo.

Kai's Rolls
Initiative (1d20+5=13)
Listen, Spot (1d20+1=17, 1d20+1=3)

Initiative Order
13 Kai
12 Hobgoblin
10 Estra
9 Arianna
9 Magpie
5 Greywulf

Arianna: You see an arrow thud against Magpie's armor. Tracing it's flight back, you can see the Hobgoblin hiding 10 feet up a tree, about 50 feet or so away. Flying towards you are a couple of Razorcrows.

Kai, Estra and Greywulf: About 30 feet or so away through the bush, you hear Magpie's startled reaction to the arrow bouncing off his armor. It will take a full round action through the undergrowth to reach him.

Kai takes off towards the sound, and ends his round just inside the cover of the bushes. If you want to do somehting different, let me know

The Hobgoblin shoots again at Magpie, this time shooting wide (hit AC 8). However, the two Razorcrows finish closing the distance, and strike at Magpie with their talons. The first one hits for 2 damage, and the 2nd one also hits, this time for 1 damage.

Kai: You made it there in time to be able to spot the Hobgoblin as he shot at Magpie.

I smile with glee as the hobgoblin reveals his position. I can feel the arcane energies that I maintain a tenous mastery over well up and I release them in a blast of powerful magic that looks like a column of fire filled with screaming faces.
Its cool. I under stand being bust with school.
Attack 17; Damage 3

Male Dwarf Cleric 1

first full round move to the fight

2nd round will fire with crossbow
http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=1322337
1d20+1, 1d8-> ([14, 1], [8])
15 to hit and 8 Damage if needed

OOC I might be a little late posting so I included 2 rounds of action

OK, I'm not sure exactly where everyone has got to, so I'll take the turns of those who haven't posted yet, and to a wrte up of the first full round of combat (ie after the surprise round)

Kai, hearing Magpie's yell of surprise, takes off through the undergrowth, reaching the edge of the clearing just in time to see an arrow fly wide of Magpie. Tracing the path back, he is just able to make out the hobgoblin hiding in the tree about 50 feet away.

2 Razorcrows close on Magpie, scratching at his face with their talons (for 3 total damage). As the arrow flies wide of Magpie, Estra arrives in time to see Arianna releases a burst of Eldritch energy, that strikes the hobgoblin solidly in the chest.

Magpie then returns serve with his club against one of the Razorcrows, striking with an unconfirmed critical that still does enough damage to swat it out of the sky in a puff of feathers. He then calls for Vorax before retreating to the cover of the tree line. As he makes it back to the tree line, Greywulf arrives.

Starting a new round... Kai takes a deep breath, and bursts from the undergrowth, attempting to close the distance between himself and the Hobgoblin. He makes it to the base of the tree, and prepares to climb to the Hobgoblin 10 feet above.

The hobgoblin switches targets, and takes aim at his new foe, firing at Kai. Although the arrow thuds against Kai's armor, it is unable to penetrate.

The remaining Razorcrow pursues Magpie into the undergrowth, provoking an attack from Magpie, which misses. The bird again scratches at Magpie's face, for 1 damage.

Estra then lines up the hobgoblin with a great kill shot that pierces him through the chest, and knocks him out of the tree.

Arianna you are up. There is one Razorcrow left flying around Magpie's head.

Male Human Druid / 1

Sorry for being tardy Mevers I've had huge problems getting online recently, will be a little better from now on but not perfect for a whle to come so feel free to take Magpie's turns as you have.

If he is still under attack from a crow after Arianna's done her stuff Magpie will strike up inhto the air with his spear trying to pluck the unnatural bird attacking him out of the air.

Magpie attacks crow with spear; damage if relevant (1d20+1=6, 1d8+1=2)

If he is not currently under attack he'll hunker down in the bushes and get his sling ready. 'Don't trample the Fox !'

Sorry 'bout not posting before. Been quite busy lately.

My next action (on my turn) will be to charge the razorcrow circling Magpie, taking care not to trample the fox.

Don't worry about not posting, I know how it goes. And real life is more important than PbP gaming anyway :)

Arianna unleashes a burst of eldrith energy at the remaining Razor Crow, but not wanting to hit Magpie, her attack misses, exploding harmlessly amongst the trees. Magpie than attempts to finish off the bird, but his attack also misses.

Greywulf is up. I'll give him until tomorrow to post, otherwise I'll post for him again.

Glad to see you are concerned with not trampling the fox, although he is about 20 feet from the tree line, so not really in danger.

Kai Renyu wrote:

Oops forgot to roll.

Kai's Attack/Damage (1d20+4=6, 1d10+4=6)

probably missed, even with +2 charging bonus to the attack roll making it an 8.

I grin as I see my arcane power lay low a hobgoblin. I let another blast of flame fly at the remaining bird with a gleeful laugh.
Attack 11
Damage 3

Male Human Barbarian 1

Greywulf swings his greataxe at the nearest bird.

Melee attack 1d20 + 4 = 18

If that hits, damage is 1d12 + 4 = 7

Greywulf finishes off the remaining Razorcrow, to the relief of Magpie, leaving him to patch his wounds as best as possible.

That's everything dead. Well done on your first successful battle. It was looking there for a moment like that final razorcrow would take Magpie to negatives, glad you guys got it in time.

If you search the Hobgoblin:

Spoiler:
A search of the corpse yields a suit of Studded leather armor, a buckler, shortbow, a quiver with 24 arrows, a longsword, 2 daggers, and 2.3 gp in silver and copper

Male Human Druid / 1

Magpie slowly approaches the Fox trying to calm (Wild empathy to Calm Fox (1d20+1=8)) it and accertain just how injured it is (Heal- Fox Triage (1d20+5=25) ). He'll use a couple of Cure Minor wounds on it if it looks like it needs it - that all he can do.

'Can someone help me get this trap open while I hold him ?'

Incidentally, what type of Fox is it ? (Identify Fox (1d20+7=24) )

The fox is a Darkmoon Firefoot, a species of fennec unique to this region. It is a small fox with large ears and wispy patches of flame-colored fur around its paws.

It's hindquarters are pretty badly slashed from the trap. With a cantrip or two and a week of care, you should be able to nurse it back to full health. However, first you have to get it out of the trap (DC 14 STR check, 2 of you can try).

Male Human Barbarian 1

Greywulf heads over to the trap and the pitiful sounding fox, "I'll help you with this. I'm familiar with some kinds of traps."

Strength Check 1d20 + 4 = 23

Male Dwarf Cleric 1

I will go over to Arianna and convert Shield of faith to a cure light wounds for 8 points of healing (over kill but a good roll). “ Let the Blessed healing of Sarenrae help and heal you my friend.”

Kai sheaths his katana. "Hmm. A fox. In my land they represent mischief and trickery. Fitting that one should be part of a hob's trap."

Estra Laik wrote:

I don't think I took any damage.

I don't think I took any damage.

It was Magpie that took the damage - Magpie beaten up by Crows Typical !!

Male Dwarf Cleric 1

well brain cramp strikes again it should have been MAgpie that was healed

Male Human Druid / 1

As soon as he's sure the fox is stable (and free from the trap) Magpie thanks Greywulf for his assistance and Estra for his healing and then inspects the bodies of the Razorcrows. Selecting one of the longest tail feathers from both he ties them into his collection and then feeds the birds' corpses to Vorax, unless anyone else wants them ?

OK, so having rescued the trapped darkmoon firefoot, and fought of the hobgoblin and his razorcrow attack birds, I assume you continue your perilous journey through the forest to the eldest tree?

If I don't hear otherwise, I'll assume you are. Id anyone doing anything in particular on the way?
