Description: Quite small for a human but wiry, Magpie is not an impressive sight. His black hair is ill-kempt, cut unevenly short at the top and sides of his head, long and part braided at the back. Small charms and beads are intertwined with feathers of many woodland birds. Patches of hair are almost pure white, telling, perhaps, of dire past experience. Similar patches show in his unevenly growing beard - Magpie permanenetly looks like he shaved about two weeks ago. Above the beard is a tanned and grimy face, nondescript apart from watchful emerald green eyes, with a high, prematurly lined forehead. His clothes are a mis-fitting collection of borrowed, bartered and (perhaps) stolen articles of several different styles similar in only one way : mainly brown. His 'signature' garment is a immense stained cloak, split into two halves which billow out behind him when he runs like two huge wings. His Leather and wood items are a different matter however: Crafted by Magpie himself they tell of the concientious efforts of a reasonable skilled craftsmen who has the potential to be good, if not great. The leather is stained black with patches of light grey which, if viewed from the right angle, could be said to represent the faces of angry spirits. His wooden items are carefully carved in representations of wide eyed nature spirits. His Spear is made of a spring-like twisted piece of ash but has been seen to fly straight and true. His club, which alway hangs from his wrist on a twisted leather thong, is carefully carved from burrwood and looks like a birds claw holding a fist sized stone. Magpie is quietly spoken and seems ill at ease in large crowds. He seems most at ease in the wilderness where, he is either totally still or moving speedily, with urgent purpose. Magpie in Falcon's Hollow: The people of Falcon's hollow have little to do with Magpie. They know he lives rough in the wood outside of town and most refer to him as the 'badger man' because of Vorax who is Magpie's constant companion. The carved wooden trinkets, boxes and utensils Magpie sells, standing with Vorak beneath his cloak on the outskirts of the Market (if there is one !?), bring him some acclaim as a craftsman but none know of his divine calling - though those who know the habits of badgers may suspect. Background: DM only Spoiler:
Magpie comes from the woods, all woods. At least that is what he believes. He was born somewhere in the woods twenty odd years ago and has existed there ever since, taken in by woodsmen, foresters, trappers and a finally a druidic order. He knows no family, has no siblings and cares little for people beyond those who had a part in his raising and those few who he befriends.
From an early age he travelled from glade to glade, forest to forest, always living rough, always happiest when alone with the rightful forest inhabitants. He can count the number of times he's slept in a proper bed on his fingers. In his mid-teens he had an encounter with an abomination from out of the deep woods which nearly cost him his life and his sanity. Now all he can recall is a dark shape and a putrid smell and he does not know how he came by the ridge of scar tissue hidden beneath his tunic. Some see his stillness as a sign of deep commune with nature but the truth is he's waiting, listening, straining all his senses for any sign of the abominations return. And if or when it finally does, he doesn't know whether he'll fight or run. Recently, Magpie has been watching the logging activities around Falcon's Hollow and weighing up what response he should give on behalf of the woods. He lacks the power to directly balance the activities of the logging 'Barons' but there will come a time..... Personality: DM only Spoiler:
Magpie speaks little mainly because he's got little to say that anyone wants to hear. Crowds intimidate him as do open and built up spaces.
He is however, a good listener and observer and, if lucky enough to find an eager listener will talk for hours about what he knows, what he's seen and what he believes. Magpie sees his (Neutral Alignment) beliefs as a way of maintaining the status quo: if you cut down a tree you plant another, if you hunt you hunt only what you need an honour your prey, you help those that help you and so on. He has no time for those of his faith that wish to push civilisation back where it came from, he just wants civilisation to 'stay on it's side of the fence'. Magpie's only friend at the beginning of the campaign is Vorax who he rescued from an ill-placed rabbit snare when he was still a pup. He confides in the animal, asks it's opinion and, on many occasions, has trusted his animal instincts over his own. Development Intentions: Will probably take a level or two of Skirmisher as we progress. It fits my mental picture of Magpie and will help with our lack of a Rogue situation. |
