don't lasers use no ammo?

Heck yeah! Aside from replacement Destroyers, my biggest expenditure is in ammo (seven railguns + one missile launcher will do that to you, ne).

I need Iron Charge S. Lots and lots of Iron Charge S.

Tagged the requirements per batch at the end of the last in-game mail. Also can make Hammerhead drones and cargo expanders for those interested in such, along with a few other miscellaneous items. If I manage to get a Hulk sometime soon (big If, that - there's only one left at a price currently within my range), I'll start buying more blueprints as necessary.

Currently in the running for names for the potential corp:
Knights of Paizonia (suggested by Fatespinner, I believe)
Paizonia LLC (likewise)
Lords of Paizonia (a spinoff of the first)
Paizonian Labs (mine)
Paizonian Industries (Mike)
Paizonian Corp (Mike)
Paizonian Mining Industries (Me)
Paizonia Frontiers (Me)

Anyone interested in the corp, please cast your vote or suggest your own. Once the fate of my potential Hulk has been determined, I'll see what develops.

Lasers require frequency crystals. I have the blueprints for all the S crystals, as well, but they tend to be a bit pricier, because they don't get used up. Most of the good crystals require Zydrine to produce, which is an expensive mineral, although not nearly as much as Megacyte.

Also, Tech 2 lasers degrade their crystals over time, which means they need periodically replaced with fresh crystals. I do not, at this time, have any T2 blueprints of any kind.

Weep weep weep, EVE sounds cool, CoH was cool, but I am staring down a serious budget crunch for the next few months.

I would love to try the EVE demo, but I am sure I would get addicted and then be jonsing for a fix.

Oh well, a few more months of poverty...

Ooooh Cargo Expanders.

As for Corp names, I don't think we should limit ourselves just to Paizo, possibly something named close to one of thier products or characters that are generic enough not to be copyright infringing.

Sort of like:
Finders of the Path, Inc
Runemage Corp

Although, I do conceed that with Paizonia, more people that know of Paizo may immediately recognize it.

Then there's all the permutaions of the Paizonia theme:
Paizan
Paizorra
Paizaga
Paizoth
Paizogonia
Paizonia
etc.

My only beef with that name is that it sounds more like a guild than a corporation. I kinda like the distinction that EVE makes from every other MMO out there in that the organization is an entity of it's own, not just something for a group to call themselves. Also, I'm pretty sure you can't use the unmodified 'Paizo' in the name without violating the EULA.

That said, if everyone loves the idea, I'm not going to be the naysayer. I'll join up with you guys even if you decide on Gnomish Gninja Gnoobcakes.

EDIT: If we move away from the 'Paizo' naming convention, what does everyone think of 'Seven Swords Ltd.'?

Seven Swords Ltd. has my vote. Sounds very cool by itself, and it's related to Paizo.

I updated to a paid account last night. It's official. I'm hooked.

Also, at Kassil's in-game recommendation, I sought out a program called 'EVEMon' which is basically a skill-planning tool that lets you optimize your character's skill training to reach the goals you set for yourself as fast as possible.

According to EVEMon, Fatwatai is 91 days from piloting a Hulk! Woo-hoo! Well... skill-wise, anyway. Raising the money for that ship is going to be quite the chore. I'm currently training Science IV, which is a prerequisite for Astrogeology (I have the skillbook already). Astrogeology is a prerequisite for the Hulk (one of many), but it also has the added bonus of increasing my mining laser yields by 5% per level of the skill! :D

You know you're addicted to EVE when:

You wake up at 3 in the morning, head downstairs, and log-in just so that you can set your next skill training up after the first one finishes. After all, if you had waited until 8 when you woke up, that would've been 5 hours of lost productivity!

I really wish they would let you queue skills, though. At least a couple at a time.

That, my friend, is what long-term skills are for. You set a long, painful skill overnight, and then switch to shorter skills when you're actually playing - unless you need that long skill done ASAP, anyhow.

And since the majority vote (with myself abstaining) is for Seven Swords Ltd, the corp is now formed with that name. Anyone wanting to join, feel free to apply.

I made the leap last night, and installed the game. Admitedly because my Dawn of War disk one was scratcehd and suddenly found myself with nothing to blow up.

How exactly does one join up for the Corp anyhow, is it the sort of thing where a member invites us, or do we click something somewhere to apply?

If it's the second one, where do we click, because I can't find it.

I joined the corp last night. You have to travel to the Corp HQ first, which is located at the Inherent Implants station in the Amdonen system. Once you're there, in the lower right-hand corner of the screen (where your Agents show up on the station screen), you'll see a tab called 'Headquarters.' Click that tab, scroll down until you find Seven Swords Ltd and click 'Apply to Join.' In the message, identify who you are and submit it. Kassil will have to accept the application to admit you, so if he's not online when you apply, you'll have to wait until he logs on before you get your confirmation.

After that, it's a done deal!

Is there a brief summary of this game? I will never be able to play, but y'all have me curious as to how it works. Do you have a character and then get to pilot a ship? Or can you control a fleet?

Sebastian wrote:

You only command one ship at a time, but groups of players can form corporations and share ownership of massive resources such as capital ships and starbases, where other corporation members can dock their ships for repairs, dip into the corporation's assets for new weapons and upgrades for their ships, restock ammo, and so on.

The corporation's leaders can assign roles to other individuals within the company so that the chain of command prevents deviant corp members from bankrupting the company. For example, the CEO (who has the power to do ANYTHING with the corp) can assign another player to be a 'quartermaster'. This means that, when other corp members dock at a corp facility and want to take out some ammo or a new weapon or whatever, the quartermaster has to approve their withdrawl. The CEO can also, if he chooses, eliminate this position and allow all corp members to take whatever they want. There's 100,000,000,000 different things you can do with it, that's just one example. You can also have Personnel Managers who approve applications, Treasurers who maintain the corporate checkbook (and dole out funding to the departments that need it), Supply Officers who procure materials for corporate engineers to craft items from, etc. etc. etc.

And, the extra super awesome thing: You don't even actually need to be playing for your character to advance! You can sit in a starbase for MONTHS and still make progress, even if you only log in for 30 seconds once a week. Your skills continue to train even when you're logged off! The only thing you need to do is assign the next skill to start training when the first one is finished. Some skills take 15 minutes to train. Others take 15 days. It depends on what skill you're going for, your character's attributes, and what level of the skill you're training. I love it! I no longer feel guilty about spending money when I can't log in for 8 hours a day!

While you're training those skills (which will certainly take you several months), we can do more of our exciting mining relays! 54m ISK won't take all that long, especially as I start getting access to bigger and bigger ships. What we really need, however, is to find a good low-sec zone where I can mine Zydrine. I found a few chunks of it last night, and the damn things sell for 300 ISK each. Get 10K of them? Bam! 3 mil. Easy.

Mmmmmm... cargo space....

Railguns are nice, but I've noticed that missiles really seem to be the kings of damage-dealing. They're slow to fire, but 2-3 missiles is all it takes to destroy the pirates we've faced thus far. Plus, they're pretty accurate even at long ranges.

That is true. My Destroyer, though, has the hardpoints for seven railgun turrets but only one missile turret. I wonder if I couldn't do more damage with a smaller ship holding more missile turrets...? Hmm...

Well, with a smaller ship, you'll be able to intercept incoming pirates faster (i.e. before they start shooting me) but you'll be sacrificing cargo space and hit points. A lack of cargo space means more trips to unload the can, which means less profit per hour. A smaller ship is also more likely to get you blown up since you can't take many hits in it. If we had more people to do the ferrying runs, I'd say go for it, but when it's just the two of us (or with my roommate in his frigate), we need the extra space. His frigate is currently tricked out with 3 missile bays and he tears stuff apart at insane ranges... but he barely puts a dent in my mining payloads. :)

Maybe you should do some research and try to find the absolute longest-range railgun (and ammo) that you can get ahold of. It'll probably do wimpy damage, but if you have 3 long-range guns, 2 medium range guns, 2 short-range heavy hitting guns, and a missile bay, you can pretty much just sit in one place and pick them apart as they approach, switching to the appropriate weapons as they get closer and closer.

I wouldn't be too worried about me getting shot at a couple of times, though. As we've seen, my shields can take quite a thrashing before they give in.

All good points. For now I'll stick with the Destroyer and act as main ore unloader. Some day, when our corporation is bigger, I'll get to play full-time security. For now, though, as a small business, Seven Swords Ltd needs its employees and officers to do what they can for the greater good. :)

Speaking of corporations, how do they make money? Do we just contribute money to them or can they make it independent of our operations?

Slow to fire, and the real distinction of missiles is that if you fire a missile with too large a blast radius for the ship's signature radius that you're targeting, you lose a lot of the damage. Railguns, meanwhile, are fast to fire, and with the right skills they're devastating in terms of damage and accuracy. However, one shouldn't overlook the value of artillery, given that it lets you swat things down at long ranges...

If someone else wants to train Industrial ships, you can cram the holds of those things with a great deal of raw material.

And sales can be set to either be yours or to go to their corp wallet. And, in theory, there's a tax rate that is supposed to somehow be involved, but Fatespinner and I had no luck with it.

That's kind of the configuration I have right now. Three 150mm railguns for the range, four 75mm gatling railguns for the ROF and close-in stuff, and one missile rack to pound the baddies into oblivion. :D
