I went to a funeral for a friend yesterday. He was only 22 years old. He was in a car accident. CHP says it wasn't his fault - he'd been driving the speed limit; a car in the next lane lost control and hit his, and flipped his car over the divider.

On a truly miniscule note: Anthem Blue Cross is raising my insurance rate again, and I haven't worked in over a month. I have a guaranteed job next week, though...so there's a tiny silver lining to my storm cloud.

My condolences to you, and your friend's family.

I'm so sorry.

Have you explained the concept of death to them before?

Kinda of, not really. They are so young.

Oh dear. That is... a whole big thing in and of itself, aside from the terrible loss of Fin.

I figured out death when I was five, waking up one morning and sitting up, realizing that one day I would cease to be. It took me a few minutes to get off the bed. I just stared forward at a stack of Hilights magazines. Then I went downstairs and ate breakfast and life went on.

I don't know how most children deal with it, but they do. I guess only you know if you're ready, or you think they're ready to take on such a heady, intense subject.

I'm sorry Solnes. This is an awful rite of passage that kids go through. I remember when one of my favorite fish died...I was sad for a while, but it made me take better care of my other fish(I was responsible for feeding them). Still, it hurt.

When I was sevenish, my Dad went to leave for work on a cold winter morning and started his truck where one of our cats happened to be sleeping in the engine compartment. (I was young and really not concerned with details at the time, but I'm guessing it got caught either in the fan or in one of the belts.)

Imagine that. Not only having to come inside and tell his kids that their cat was dead, but that he was somewhat responsible. That was some gravity.

It'll be rough, but you'll do fine.

Sorry to hear that Solnes...

On the same pet note, I'm taing my doggie to the Vet tomorrow to have a tumor removed... I hope my doggie returns to me :(

Oh man. I know that sinking sensation in your gut trying to figure that one out. I had already had to explain the concept of death to Bryce before our first cat died. (We had three, all roughly the same age. Apparently 15 was a good age for them since they all died within months of each other.)

Anyways, I've always taken the rip the band-aid off quickly approach. I've tried to explain things as gently as possible, but with total, unrelenting honesty. It seems to have worked out okay in the long run. Just, be prepared for lots of tears. I also found it helped to emphasize that the pet was well loved and taken care of and had a good life and that it was better for said pet not to be suffering. I know, it sounds totally lame. I don't know. Maybe it only works on my kid. He's such an unrelenting optimist. But that seemed to really help him deal with it.

However you decide to deal with things, good luck. And I'm very sorry about the loss of your pet. :(

+1 honesty is still the best policy. It opens the hard doors to talk about what matters to you and yours.

The Washington County Commissioner of Jurors is a f+#!ing moron. They sent me a letter in SEPTEMBER asking me to renew my ... whatever it is that I had to renew, and I sent them a reply via e-mail that I would be out of New York until June of 2010. They replied promptly, saying that that was no problem, and they would put my jury service on hold.

TODAY (that is to say, February 20, 2010), I received a jury summons in the mail, saying that if I did not report for jury duty on MONDAY (that is to say, February 22, 2010), I would incur a $1000.00 fine plus up to thirty days jail time. What the f#%&? They know full well that I'm a thousand miles away from home with NO WAY to get back. And if they don't respond to the urgent e-mail message I sent within the next day, I'm a f*!~ing FUGITIVE.

Fax them a copy of the email you received (518) 746-2159, just to be on the safe side. A phone call might help too (518) 746-2125, to check that they received the fax.

Shiny, you can send a fax from most of word processing programs, such as Microsoft Word, through internet.

According to the word processing program you have, it can be a bit tricky.

If you need help :

Or just try this free fax service from internet :

Alright, I've sent a fax via Faxzero.com. Again, thank you very much.

Shiney, in my experience, those juror commissions talk a tough game so that people take them seriously. If you contact them promptly to reschedule, there usually isn't a problem. They get a lot of people who never show up or call or do anything, so they have to talk tough, but if you follow up with them promptly at every opportunity, they probably won't give you a hard time.

Bummer. I hope it goes well, but I've had crap like this come up before. I had a situation where I did some community service. 11 years later the city told me I had to produce my documentation or pay ~ $300 or the State would revoke my license. I can't locate the certificate, and the charity where I did the work doesn't keep records past 7 years, so I go down to the court house to pay the fine so they don't revoke my license. The court house won't take my money, and they send me to the collection agency that never contacted me that was contracted to the city. I finally located them, and I had to pay the collection contractor that only sent out 1 letter (they claim) around $ 100 on top of the $ 300 to keep my license for the community service I already performed. Who keeps record for more than 11 years? I guess the moral of the story is never throw away documentation dealing with the government.

.....and people wonder why I don't trust the government.

Petty, but buttmuches that park in front of your house on snow day causing the snowplows to pass you by tick me off. Go park in front of your own darn house!

Something almost exactly the same happened to a guy I work with. I haven't had those sorts of dealings, but I have had some bad experiences with the police (which I won't get into). I keep all sorts of documentation just to be on the safe side. Don't trust any sort of bureaucrat within an inch of your life.

I had another friend with a perfect driving record get arrested on an outstanding warrant for DUI/driving on a suspended license. It turned out that some one with the same name lost their license for a DUI, but they revoked Bills instead! They state admitted they were wrong , but they still made him pay to get a new license! I have a lot of these examples, and these are just two of the more benign ones! Yeah...I'm still bitter.

Many years ago, I was a young member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity at the University of Southern Mississippi. Our philanthropy was Cystic Fibrosis, for which we held a fundraiser every year.

The year I was chosen to head the fundraising was the second year of a very successful program called the Sports Challenge. That year, for the first time, our poster child was the son of a local fire fighter, a young boy by the name of Nicholas Hendry.

I have just learned that Nicholas died shortly after his 18th birthday. R.I.P. Nicholas.

Thanks, BT. Sadly, I hadn't seen or spoken to the kid in like 14 years or so, but the folks I kept in touch with said he was really a great guy. He was even going to pledge our Fraternity when he got to college.

I'm sure the charity touched his life and made it more livable and enjoyable for his short time on Earth.

My significant other is a cancer survivor and my third wife died of cancer in her thirties. My SO's signature line in her e-mail is "Life is not the number of breaths you take, but the moments that take your breath away." It doesn't make the early death of friends or family much easier, but there's a lot to be said for quality over quantity. I don't know if that helps, but I've known more folks than I ever thought I would that lived remarkable lives in all too short a span.

Take care!

Someone at the coffee shop I frequent while trying to get writing done set down a candle (which they put out around dusk) right behind my computer screen and it's been melting my laptop casing while I typed. The manager says this has happened before and that they make sure not to do it and seems to be indirectly blaming me for the damage. I certainly can't afford a new computer casing right now, that's for sure.

Geez, that's terrible. The manager is seriously blaming you for their mistake? That is really f-ed up.

I am curious what they feel your motivation for doing that was. I realize that they're not saying you did it on purpose, but to even indirectly suggest you're responsible is to say that you're really really careless.

The fact that it happened once certainly gives me the impression that they're capable of doing it again. I.e. "Oh no officer, don't accuse me of running a red light. I swore I never would do that again after the last two tickets I got!"

I assume you did not request a candle on your table?

I assume no smiling employee said, "Hi, I'm going to put this candle on your table. Just want you to know because they can give off a lot of heat and I don't want it to hurt your laptop."

No, they just go around with a tray of candles at sundown and put one on each table. Usually I'm at a bigger one, but this time there was barely room for my computer and coffee saucer, much less a candle. She says she'll talk to the owner tomorrow, so we'll see what happens then, but I'm not optimistic.

Maybe, but I doubt I could sufficiently prove that I didn't move my computer up against the candle without realizing it, which is what the manager claimed is usually the case.

Just putting the candle down on a small table with someone working at it, especially since they admit that this has happened before, would be seen as negligent.

Usually, I can get to sleep fine. However, for the past few weeks, I've had the worst insomnia I've had in my entire life. I've been getting at most four hours of sleep each night, and frequently, that time is taken up with freaky-ass nightmares. What the f@++? This never happens.

To top it all off, my migraines have started to come back. I used to get them whenever I did extended, strenuous aerobic exercise, but ever since I stopped running a couple years ago, I hadn't gotten a single one. In the last three weeks, I've had three or four really bad ones, plus a constant dull headache. I don't know what the f##$'s wrong with me, and it's driving me up the wall.

Shot in the dark, but is there anyplace you can get a basic checkup and your BP taken? If it turns out OK, you have the assurance you're not going to blow a gasket while you figure out what's happening.
