La Paloma

James Last Orchestra

My dad loved stuff like this; the Non-stop dancing series was a mainstay of the soundtrack of my early years. Amazingly, I think James Last is still recording albums - he must be well into his 80s at this point.

Scarab Sages

I know there's an official music video for this, but it appears to be a bit AWOL; this alternative is rather well-done, though.

Jerry Springer

Weird Al Yankovic

Agreed - thay's pretty good for an amateur effort.

Well, that post above will be my last for a week or so. Headed down to Corpus Christi TX for a dedication ceremony of a 5-generation-ago relative's grave (and visiting Galveston and Austin). The family chipped in to get a newer stone and we couldnt all get together for Veterans Day, but we're going to have the speeches on Saturday. (Yes Im taking the Alamo tour...and yes Im going to ask about the basement. RIP Jan Hooks).

Enjoy your trip, DN...

Edge Of A Broken Heart

Vixen

This is actually a pretty decent tune, once you peel away the layers of hairspray and other 80s crap. I'm particularly impressed with the drummer - working the pedals in those heels can't be easy.

I was just thinking after watching that video... during the glam metal heyday, about the only way to tell a band like Vixen apart from, say, Poison would have been the heels and skirts. Hair and makeup were pretty much the same...

Victim of Love

We've Only Just Begun

performed here by Ray Conniff And His Singers

Along with James Last, this guy was the main musical act in our house when I was growing up. My dad must have had 20+ of his albums. I still kinda like some of his versions, but it is not something I usually talk about...

Shadow Wraith Theme from Gauntlet: Dark Legacy

Vis-à-vis Vixen: I think the world could stand a lot more of that kind of "'80s crap" - it's at least infinitely better than homies, skinheads, and gilded turds being shoved down our throats. 1980s America was so strange - while half the country was enjoying forward-looking deviants like Weird Al Yankovic, Tim Burton, and of course, D&D, the other half was nearly ready to make Pat Robertson President.

Closet: Yeah, of all the useless 80s things (and there are many), the music and glammy looks are by far the least malevolent. We Euros spent the decade watching Margaret Thatcher raze England to the ground while waiting for Reagan to fall asleep on the nuclear button and destroying the world. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

@Vattnisse: Ah, I'd mistaken you for a fellow American based on previous dialogue. Where are you from, precisely? Also, are you familiar with the Mind's Eye series of CGI music videos? They're one of the crown jewels of a distinctive late 1980s/early 1990s aesthetic that I feel displays the way toward a 21st Century that ought to have been - and still can be, if we're stubborn about it.

Skorne Theme from Gauntlet: Dark Legacy

I'm not the biggest black metal fan out there, but this song is just magical. The outro (at about the 5-minute mark and onward) is flat-out fantastic. And they play their shows in suits and ties; it's like a Satanic Reservoir Dogs!

Leviathan

Akercocke

@Closet: I'm Norwegian, but have lived most of the last 10 years in the United States. And I had never heard of The Mind's Eye, but I'm watching it now (thanks, YouTube!), and it is looking pretty neat so far.

As

Stevie Wonder

Embarassingly, I thought for the longest time that "As" was a George Michael song (I remember being pleasantly surprised that he had finally written a good song) - his version is OK, but the original is much better. Here's another Stevie:

Welcome back, DN! How was the Alamo basement? :-P

Dude Looks Like a Lady

Aerosmith

I got all misty-eyed in the Alamo because my ancestor was in that Mission in 1842 (6 yrs after the massacre) on a different trip and witnessed people graffiti-ing the place and shooting at statues left there. My guy wrote in his journal at his disgust of the desecration...and there I was in 2014 seeing the graffiti dated to 1842. Kind of surreal and I choked on being silly about the basement, heh. Corpus Christi was GORGEOUS! Id like to get back to Austin and hang out there in a different context.

An aside - Steven Wilson is a flat-out genius, and PT songs are incredibly hard to cover. However, this girl does a really good job at it. Well worth a look.

Possession

Sarah McLachlan

This is another one of those songs (Every Breath You Take being the archetype) that sounds really romantic, until you listen closely enough. I've heard both of these songs played at weddings; you might want to vet the playlist a little more closely, guys...

Playing "Every Breath You Take" at a wedding is right up there with the Ronald Reagan 1984 reelection campaign wanting to use Springsteen's "Born In The USA" as its theme song. Learn to read, guys.
