Suddenly

Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richard

My parents just returned from Australia, so in honor of that...

Grand Lodge

Wow. That one will make DN spit blood. Here's some more Aussie music:

One Country

Midnight Oil

The Oils are one of my favorites. Their social agenda kind of ran away with them for a while, but the music always sounded good.

Mad World

Sara Hickman

Grand Lodge

Good song - I prefer the Gary Jules version myself. As for the Oils, Peter Garrett managed to become minister for the environment in the mid-2000s. Not bad for a rock singer.

The Heaviest Matter In The Universe

by the very, very angry French geniuses Gojira

Another Aussie music (although, strictly speaking, not 100% Aussie)

Highway To Hell

AC/DC

Ain't That a Shame

Castle Theme from Heroes of Might and Magic III

lol an Oblivious Neutron Bomb track! ARGH! Do you remember when Doctor Johnny Fever called her that on primetime TV?

Fever

which has been done by a ton of people, most famously by Peggy Lee and by Elvis. Since I am a bad person, this is instead a bad, bland version by the bad, bland Canadian Michael Bublè.

When Madonna did a cover of that song, I kept injecting the word "beaver" through it to agitate the girlfriend at the time.

Miscast

hide

I know it's by the band X Japan, but this guy is credited with the song and I know which song will be next if I have X...heh.
Also, X Japan is playing Madison Square Garden next weekend and dammit! I wish I was there! Love this band! Apparently they are taking footage for a documentary at the show and over the next few weeks. Its backed by the producer that made Searching for Sugar Man, which was a cool documentary.

Healing Hands

Elton John

Bummer about leaving X Japan off the band line, DN; I could've hit that softball out of the park! :-P

Scarab Sages

Agreed - let's get our Q's, X's, and Z's in where where we can, shall we, gents?

Well, since you asked... How 'bout these techno muppets? Sadly, it looks like the original video is gone from YouTube.

Oops. Them Girls was a song and Zig and Zag with the authors. :)

Reasons For Destruction

Xentrix

Old-school British thrash metal! Decent tune, but it sounds suspiciously like a Practice What You Preach outtake.

Xibalba

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

thanks for Xentrix! Fun thrash I had no idea existed. :) I got more of an Anthrax Efilnikufesin riff right before the break (about 0:32 mark) than a Testament riff?

Grand Lodge

My Favorite Show is 90210

Jon Cougar Concentrationcamp

Xentrix were pretty good! I guess that particular song sounds like Anthrax trying to cover Trial By Fire with a Chuck Billy wannabe on vocals. Which is, y'know, good, but does make you wonder where you heard it before... That was a problem for all the Brit thrash outfits - Onslaught, Re-Animator and Death Wish were solid bands that reminded everybody of someone else. Xentrix were probably the best of the bunch.

That was one of Weird Al's best songs in a long time! I just about choked I laughed so hard when I first heard it.

From what I gather, he was a talented actor who died comparatively recently after not getting his full due in life. He once made a bleak comment about accepting that he'd probably be remembered for his regular appearances on a certain game show rather than his numerous award-winning but individually-less-high-profile performances. I'd bet money that Al had been a personal fan and heard something about this, and so tried to help better honor his legacy by way of the Best Eulogy Evar.

Going Under

Evanescence

There doesn't seem to be much middle ground when talking about this group... where do you folks fall?

Grand Lodge

Evanescence is garbage - they synthesise some of the worst aspect of whiny emo, rap metal and goth-metal-with-pretty-frontgirl genres into an impressively complete package of crap. Having said that, they aren't Limp Bizkit-level bad, and Amy Lee has a good voice. I'll give them that, but nothing more.

Here's some more goth-metal-with-pretty-frontgirl stuff. It sucks, too (their World of glass album had some good stuff on it, though).

Equilibrium

Tristania

I agree Amy Lee has some pipes on her -- is there any metal-with-pretty-frontgirl that you think is worthwhile? I'm not sure if this qualifies, but I recently stumbled across it. Enjoy!

Tell It To My Heart

Taylor Dayne

Some of these women are of the melodic hard rock vox style, some are the throat-tearing variety. I enjoy both styles. Morgan Lander (Kittie), Doro Pesch (Warlock), Jeanne Sagan (All That Remains), Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), Cara McCutheon (Mortillery), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Jill Janus (Huntress), and Masha Scream (Arkona). Also, I like Tarja some of the time. I also love the IRON MAIDENS, but they've got a built-in advantage singing covers of my favorite songs.

Thank You Pain

The Agonist
...which had Alissa White-Gluz, the new singer for Arch Enemy

Grand Lodge

That's a good question. Beyond Arch Enemy and perhaps Garbage and Halestorm, I'm not sure if there are any female-fronted rock or metal acts I actually like. I honestly don't quite know why.

Auberge

Chris Rea

I love this guy. That voice + slide guitar virtuosity = good stuff.

D'Arcy from the pumpkins, Saraya, Headpins, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Dale Bozzio from Missing Persons, Sheila E, Wendy and Lisa (from the Revolution), Ann and Nancy Wilson, and Janis if we're gathering other women in "rock" in a wider sense.

Oh noes! Here is the Stomp The House link. The rap bit is particularly good, I must say.

Probably my favourite new song this year. As an added bonus, the video is trippy enough to give Die Antwoord a run for their money.

Drunken Nomad and Vatnisse, thanks for the input. I really enjoy Garbage and Halestorm; early Heart is awesome. DN, the other bands you listed have given me a weekend's worth of YouTubing.

Misery Loves My Company

Three Days Grace

Grand Lodge

Warning! Cheese factor critical!

Templars Of Steel

Hammerfall

Lessee....Lacuna Coil (seen here doing a Depeche Mode cover!) has some decent tunes. Also, while these are not really my cup of tea, there's the European "epic metal" genre with bands like Epica, Within Temptation and (maybe the best of them) Therion.

I'm familiar with Lacuna Coil's DM cover (one of the better ones)...will check out the other stuff. Thanks for the leads, Vattnisse!
