Gentle Giant, I just noticed that you live in Denmark... jeg har boet i Danmark for 1.5 aar.

Please forgive my spelling and grammatical errors... last time I actively studied Danish was in the spring of 2002, and I have had no opportunity to practice around here.

GAH! Okay, no more posting from phone. It adds weird extra characters for some reason.

My quoted post above was in response to Dalzig. I have to go to bed, but I will post more in the morning.

You mentioned earlier that none of us were from Jhesail (the capital), so I'd like to know where I could be from then? This, of course, depends on you approving of Kharid taking these two feats:

Collegiate Wizard (Complete Arcane p. 181)
Precocious Apprentice (Complete Arcane p. 181)

If you won't allow these two feats, then I don't need to be from a major city (where one would suspect that a wizard's college could be found).

Both feats approved.

So, you now have a choice, and I figure it could go either way --

You can either be a refugee from one of the larger cities in Tynear, or you can be the exception to my ruling on Jhesail. You'll have trained at the magic academy there, but you'll also be pretty unfamiliar with the city itself, as more or less the entire time you were at the academy, you were inside a building studying magic.

It's entirely your choice. Oh! And also, you are still originally from somewhere else, even though you trained in Jhesail.

Okay, Rend -- I've found your brief backstory, and I have a couple of ideas/suggestions to bounce off of you.

You are from the Freehold Nation provice of Luhr, which is somewhat backwater place where barbarian tribes still roam. The tribes of Luhr have ever been wild in nature, but they fought bravely beside the rest of the Freehold Lords during the revolt against the Witch Kings, and thus earned their place among the Nations.

Over the centuries since, the Sovreign Lords of Luhr have always been the most difficult to treat with and predict, and border skirmishes are a way of life among Luhr's neighbors.

You yourself, though aspiring to be a cleric of Kord, have attended no seminary. And though there are temples and seminaries to Kord among the civilized folk, that is not typically how the faith is practiced and spread among the barbarian tribes.

A warrior priest saw the spark in you, and initiated you into the faith (even though you don't have any levels in cleric yet, you've begun your journey). You were then charged to go out into the wider world (outside your tirbal area, preferably outside of Luhr istelf) and see and experience it, while practicing your faith. To live as a force of might for good in the world, and to embrace the untamed wild that is in every living thing. You are to wander and find your calling in life, spread the faith of Kord where you can, and look for signs of Kord's continued presence in the world that you may witness and understand them.

That's why you're in Diamond Lake (it's where your feet have taken you).

Let me know how that works for you (or, more importantly, if that does NOT work for you), and I'll post more later on tonight (I'm off to work again....).

And to actually give a bump with content, here's a recap of our team thus far:

Jonventus --> Rend, half orc barbarian/priest of Kord
Arctaris --> Shamus Card'das, human rogue, Tynearian refugee
TwiceBorn --> Harlon Happytoes, halfling binder, Tynearian refugee
Traken --> Dalzig Berenbiddle, gnome priest of Wee Jas
GentleGiant --> Kharid Thunderrune, dwarf diviner

I have to say, I am liking this team a lot. It's got a lot of character and a lot of story potential. It's got good coverage of the bases, all in surprising and unusual ways that I think will work quite nicely.

This is a good spread of characters, and so far it looks like a team that will do well in the AP.

I think I've anwsered all questions still outstanding (except for some local possible town names for Dalzig and Kharid to hail from), anybody have any new questions? Things they want to know more about? I'm going to try and scratch together a couple of regional and national maps for you guys, to get a better picture of what the place looks like, but that may still be several days or more off.

I'm going to go with Jhesail. Originally from the above-ground settlement near a dwarven stronghold (i.e. the term Hill Dwarf would be more appropriate than Mountain Dwarf), Kharid had always been interested in the crumbling ruins dotting the countryside around the small town. Thanks to the local dwarven patrols these ruins were kept monster free (they had also been "looted" already for anything immediately valuable), yet they still spoke of ages past and hidden secrets of those living then.

Thus was born Kharid's interest in archeology.
To further his studies and to develop better means to explore the past, he went to Jhesail to study at the academy there. The city itself holding no interest to him, he immediately went to work searching for new places to explore after his graduation.
What attracted him to Diamond Lake was the rumours of the cairns surrounding the town, and add the mining operation, which in itself could turn up many interesting things from the past, and you have an area ripe for the "archeological picking."

Wow, for someone who's only been here for 1.5 year you certainly have an outstanding grasp of the language (generally, IIRC, considered one of the top 10 hardest languages to master). And no practice since 2002... I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you probably have above average linguistic skills. ;)

Right now I'm living in the western part of Jutland (a small town of roughly 45,000 inhabitants - Holstebro - which is also where I grew up), but I lived in Aarhus from 2000 to 2006.
As for what I do... basically I'm trying to straighten out this thing called life (battling depression, trying to get in shape (down 36 lbs over the last 3 months) and figure out what I'm going to do in the future) which is a full time job in itself. ;)
Probably TMI, but hey, you asked. ;)

Okay, it was Errands Day today, so I still have no new information on local towns, and I'm about to leave for work soon, and afterwards I'll be going to a midnight showing of the Simpsons movie, so no more posts from me tonight, but I should be able to respond to questions and/or post some new info for people over the next couple of days.

I'm eager to get under way! I know I wound up pretty quiet last week, and now everybody else is scarce, but we'll get it going on soon.

I don't think it would be too difficult. He'd just have to give you a couple vestiges, how they affect the char, and that'd be all. Unless he starts going real wild with like 20 vestiges...

Permission granted, Mothman. And no worries, the whole Binder thing is new to me too, so we'll get through it together, and we'll not be all that far into the AP by the time TB is gone.

Also, just got back from a midnight showing of the Simpsons Movie, which can be reviewed with three simple words:

For those who don't have the Tome of Magic, I highly recommend it. I have alot of WotC books and consider most of them to be mediocre, at best. Tome of Magic is, IMHO, one of the best D&D/d20 books out there. I can't say that I've done a profound analysis of the crunch found therein, but the artwork, flavour, and concepts/classes are second to none. I wish they had made more books like this. Now go buy it, Mothman! ;-)

Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Sorry for the delay in posting my backstory. I have one mostly written (pending approval) but have my irl game in 20 minutes. I'll post a cleaner version later tonight.

I'm incorporating some of the suggested background. The short version is that Rend grew up in an orc tribe near Luhr and found solace from the tribe's cruelty among the barbarian priests. On a particular raid, he refused to murder some helpless villagers and ended up killing most of the raiding party on his own. One orc escaped and news of this defiance got back to the tribe. Ostracized, he fled to Luhr and tried to join a seminary. While they accepted him, he wasn't the greatest student. His illiteracy proved a hindrance and he spent most of his time training in combat with the priests, taking his first level as a barbarian. Frustrated at his lack of discipline in the classroom, his teachers decided he should be sent out to spread the word of Kord (not to return until he could read and write). Since returning to his tribe was not an option, Rend accepted this task and his travels have brought him to Diamond Lake. He continues to spend his evenings in study, but progress is slow and frustrating. He decides to join an adventuring party for the opportunity to take out these frustrations on hapless foes, and to, hopefully, find someone he can force to help him with his lessons (another party member?). His goals at the moment are simple: to read and rend.

Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Here's my full background, as promised. I've also added it to my character sheet:

Aggrah, son of Myrbah, was born sixteen years ago to the Gruk clan, a tribe of barbarian orcs counting themselves among the Freehold Nations of Luhr. The identity of his human father remains a mystery to this day, but his prodigious strength, demonstrated early in his childhood, held him in good stead within the tribe, and he was trained as a full-fledged orc warrior. For the most part, he fit in well, and his racial weaknesses were overlooked.

Things changed, however, once he was old enough to accompany the raiding parties. While eager to prove himself, he was disgusted with the cruelty displayed by his companions and the wanton destruction they perpetrated. To be fair, he enjoyed the violence when used as a tool, but could not accept the rape, murder, torture, and other atrocities carried out once the battle was over. For awhile he tried to ignore this behaviour, and found solace among the few barbarians who directed their energies towards the worship of Kord, rather than to pillage and plunder. He continued in this way for just over a year.

On a small raid of a human village, however, Bergol, a particularly cruel orcish captain, decided to put Aggrah's heritage to the test, ordering him to butcher two children as their mother watched. He refused. Angered by the defiance, Bergol ordered the remaining orcs to tear him limb from limb. They tried, and failed. Aggrah was already a fierce combatant and unleashed his built up frustrations on the warriors, killing all five of them before facing Bergol in a stand-off. They seemed evenly matched. Too even. While Aggrah was prepared to fight to the death, Bergol was more interested in survival. Turning quickly, he hacked the children to pieces and slit the mother's throat, laughing. He parried one final blow and then fled back to the tribe, promising to inform them of his betrayal.

Bergol was not so well-loved by the tribe. But they would certainly take the word of a pureblood over his own. He knew, then, that he could never return to the life he had grown accustomed to. Surprisingly, he felt a great burden lift from his shoulder and knew, immediately, that his new life would be dedicated to worship. Although he had only heard about it in passing, he sought out a small seminary devoted to Kord which he had heard could be found amongst a tribe of human nomads. After tracking them for several weeks, he finally found them and was accepted as an initiate.

In order to be better integrated into human society, and to make it harder for the orcs to find him, Aggrah changed his name to the common equivalent, and has since been known only as Rend. He studied with the priests for many months and, while he naturally excelled in the combative aspects of worship, his illiteracy and lack of discipline hampered his studies in other areas. Frustrated at his slow progress, the priests decided that Rend would have to prove on his own that he could master all aspects of the faith. Only then would he be fully accepted into the Church. He was given lessons and materials with which to study and was sent out into the world. It was explained that this was a test. If he was deemed worthy, he would succeed in his lessons and would become a full-fledged priest. If he failed, he would have to worship as an outsider from afar. In the meantime, he was asked to travel, study, and spread the word of Kord. With no particular location in mind, Rend set out.

Tired and hungry, Rend eventually found himself the gates of a small town called Diamond Lake. His studies had been unproductive to this point and he decided that, after a hearty meal, he would try to hook up with an adventuring party in order to take out his frustrations on hapless foes, and to hopefully force someone to help him with his reading. Taking a deep breath, he entered the town and began his search for the nearest tavern.

Thanks for the compliments. I am familiar with the name Holstebro, might even have met someone from there, but I can't claim to have visited. I did, however, make a quick trip to Aarhus.

Sorry to hear about your recent problems, but hey, we're all human... this past year has been a real see-saw for me as well. Hated my job... quit that job... got a new job... the new job was worse than the old one (crappy boss, awesome co-workers)... had problems with girlfriend... got fired from new job... unemployed for 2 months, became really depressed but didn't realize just how badly until I got out of it... more problems with the girlfriend... got another new job, this one excellent... broke up with girlfriend... informed by landlord that he's going to sell my place, and the cost of rent/housing in Calgary is ridiculous... newest job and boss still great, and getting better... mixed feelings about break-up... landlord offers to sell me the place at below market value, and some help from family actually makes it possible for me to buy it... feeling good about being single again... now have crush on my massage therapist that'll probably go nowhere... yeah, weird year indeed.

Congrats on the weight loss, that's quite an accomplishment! I could stand to lose 10-15 lbs. myself... sigh...

And man, how I miss Scandinavia. I spent a fair bit of time in Sweden, Norway and Finland as well as Denmark, and I'm presently saving to do a trip to the Faroes and Iceland, hopefully in the next couple of years... if I'm lucky I'll have a chance to visit some old friends in DK en route to those destinations.

Now back to the game...

Male Human Bard 1/Ranger 1/Expert 3

Just a reminder that I'll be away until Monday evening. If you guys want to keep playing over the weekend, here are some possible actions that Harlon will take...

Spoilers for the DM only:

Spoiler:
If the party invites Harlon to join them, he will initially be skeptical of their intentions. Yet after some discussion, he will cautiously accept, seeing the party as a potential vehicle for escaping the hell that has become his home, Diamond Lake. Note that I'm assuming that Harlon has been renting a private room at the Feral Dog on and off for the past few months, in accordance with his fortunes... he would presently have a room rented, where he would have stashed his spear, backpack and most of his gear.

If the party sets out, he will secretly attempt a binding ritual in his room, trying to summon Malphas, the Turnfeather. I have already made the binding check, with the following result: 7 (d20 roll) + 1 (effective binder level) + 4 (CHA mod.) = 12. Given that the DC for success was a 15, this means that Harlon has become bound to Malphas for the next 24 hours, but that he has made a "poor pact." This means that Harlon's personality succumbs to Malphas's influence:

"While influenced by Malphas, you fall in love too easily. A kind word or a friendly gesture can cause you to devote yourself entirely to another person. Should that person reject you affection, your broken heart mends the moment another attractive person shows you some kindness. In addition, if you have access to poison, Malphas requires that you employ it against your foes at every opportunity." (Tome of Magic, p. 39.

After having made the pact, Harlon will attempt to keep his face concealed by his hood whenever he is in the company of others, because the sign of Malphas will be visible upon him: his teeth and tongue will turn black.

Malphas grants Harlon the following powers:

1) Bird's eye view: at will, you can summon a dove or raven (Harlon will choose a raven) to aid your powers of observation (Harlon would summon the bird once the party leaves town. (Use the stats for a raven regardless of the creature's form). The bird appears perched on your shoulder. You have complete control over its actions, and you can see what it sees and hear what it hears. Use the bird's skill check to determine the results of its actions and observations (for example, Bluff, Search, Spot, Listen), but use your skill bonuses to derive information from its observations (for example, Knowledge, Sense Motive, or Spellcraft to identify a spell)... The bird cannot talk. You can have only one bird summoned at a time. It remains until you summon another dove or raven, mentally dismiss it (a standard action), or stop binding with Malphas. Harlon will use the raven, which he will call Hector, to scout ahead if they head into the hills, as well as once they enter a cairn.

2) Poison use: you are not at risk of poisoning yourself when handling poison.

3) Sudden strike: with your melee attack, you deal an extra 1d6 points of damage anytime your target would be denied its Dexterity bonus to AC. This extra damage applies to ranged attacks only if the opponent is within 30 feet.

I evidently would love to roleplay the binding ritual, but I understand that this may not be possible and that the other players may want to move on while I am away...

Such as posting speech in bold like some of you have taken up?
Any other posting suggestions (so far I think it's going great, just wanted to streamline things if possible)?

We have been a little haphazard in our posting conventions. Sure, let's settle on some conventions and try to stick to them.

I think we should nix the speech bolding. no need for extra keystrokes unless it's something really important, like out of character speech, or deliberately private spoilers.

I know Jonventus has spoilered most of his rolls so far, and that's something else I'm not sure about.... Not saying you can't keep your rolls private from the group if you want to, but I should think most rolls should be open.

For rolls I occasionally make on your behalf (like a listen roll to hear somebody sneaking up on you), I'll post the roll results behind a spoiler tag, after describing the results of the encouter (the surprise attack in the first half-round).

Which reminds me, just to be clear, the surprise round is only ever a half round. Just wanted to put that out there, because I've seen people play it with a full round.

I agree, just put the rolls in an [ooc] section, that should do the trick (no clicking necessary - which, btw, leads me to ask whether the format both TwiceBorn and I have posted our characters in are ok?).

Which reminds me, just to be clear, the surprise round is only ever a half round. Just wanted to put that out there, because I've seen people play it with a full round.

Yep, from the SRD:

The Surprise Round

If some but not all of the combatants are aware of their opponents, a surprise round happens before regular rounds begin. Any combatants aware of the opponents can act in the surprise round, so they roll for initiative. In initiative order (highest to lowest), combatants who started the battle aware of their opponents each take a standard action during the surprise round. You can also take free actions during the surprise round. If no one or everyone is surprised, no surprise round occurs.
So, only standard and free actions allowed (I'm guessing quickened too...?)

Male Human Geek 5

You can do certain full-round actions in the Surprise round, but with disadvantages. One that comes to mind is that you can charge, but instead of being able to run 2x your distance, you can only run 1x your distance.

Looking through the PHB, you can also Withdraw as a standard action, but only moving 1x your speed.

Male, but you really don't want to know how to check gender on a beholder... Human. You just can't beat that extra feat and those extra skill points. Gamer 20 (specialist school - DMing)/Theater Tech 15/Writer 10/ Slacker 30

Agreed on both of those.

I figure that's a matter of personal preference, and I'm fine with whatever method of posting character sheets makes you happy, provided all important information is included.

Male Impoverished Student 2/Amateur Chef 3

Sorry I've not been around for a while; I'm on a trip and I'll not be back until the 13th or 14th. I might be able to post occasionally but don't expect it. Please NPC me as needed.

Ah! Good. I was starting to think I smelled bad or something.

I think you're not alone in being away from your computer, Arctaris.

Male Human Sorcerer 2

Anders Delimber, vaguely reporting for duty!

Wow.

Okay. Ignore that last post, guys. I was posting and on the phone at the same time, and somehow completely lost track of which thread I was in.

That was supposed to go in the thread for the PbP I'm playing in.

Let me have a look... Male it would seem Giant Dwarf... yup Geek 8/Jock 4 (Am. Football)

A question for our glorious DM:
To what extent would you allow us to embellish/ad lib on the story/setting?
I'm not talking about gaining strange powers or some such, but things like adding a bit of flavour here and there, like the drizzle and seemingly "prophetic" exclamations.
I'd just like to know where the boundaries are. :-)

Excellent question, GG.

Let me answer you this way: I am a trained and experienced improviser, and the Number One Rule in Improv is "yes, and..." Meaning that when somebody else tosses out a bit of reality (like the fact that it's drizzling), everyone is supposed to accept it into the communal reality and build upon it, rather than stepping on the other person, and contradicting the reality they've introduced.

So, as far as boundries are concerned, most NPCs and new locations (particularly dungeons) are my domain, but everything else is up for grabs, and I'm happy to you guys throw in bits of description and such at will.

We'll all try not to step on each other (like saying it's a sunny, clear day, when you all leave the Feral Dog), but I'm sure mistakes will happen. We'll all just try to roll with it and move on, and only really worry about it too much if it's something affecting a battlefield (another arena you should all probably let me describe first).

Quick note to let you all know that I will be out of town and most likely unable to post from Aug 16-20, inclusive. My apologies for the inconvenience.

I just saw on another thread that you have a Facebook profile, so I took the liberty of adding you as a friend there. :-D

And you're always welcome to pop in when you go on your next tour of Scandinavia. :-)
Edit: and if you bring some of the people on your own friends list with you I wouldn't mind at all... (preferably the girls)! :-D

Regarding being unable to post, I'll be moving to a new apartment around September 1st. I'll most likely still have internet access somewhere, but depending on how busy I get with the actual moving I might miss a day or two. So, a heads up from me too. :-)

Hey man, keep your eyes off my girls!... ;-)

Thanks for the invitation! I'm currently dreaming up a big trip from Denmark, to the Faroe Islands and Iceland... I'd love to be able to do that in the next few years. So who knows, perhaps I might stop by en route to Hanstholm!

Good luck with your move in September...
