Background:

Aggrah, son of Myrbah, was born sixteen years ago to the Gruk clan, a tribe of barbarian orcs counting themselves among the Freehold Nations of Luhr. The identity of his human father remains a mystery to this day, but his prodigious strength, demonstrated early in his childhood, held him in good stead within the tribe, and he was trained as a full-fledged orc warrior. For the most part, he fit in well, and his racial weaknesses were overlooked.

Things changed, however, once he was old enough to accompany the raiding parties. While eager to prove himself, he was disgusted with the cruelty displayed by his companions and the wanton destruction they perpetrated. To be fair, he enjoyed the violence when used as a tool, but could not accept the rape, murder, torture, and other atrocities carried out once the battle was over. For awhile he tried to ignore this behaviour, and found solace among the few barbarians who directed their energies towards the worship of Kord, rather than to pillage and plunder. He continued in this way for just over a year.

On a small raid of a human village, however, Bergol, a particularly cruel orcish captain, decided to put Aggrah's heritage to the test, ordering him to butcher two children as their mother watched. He refused. Angered by the defiance, Bergol ordered the remaining orcs to tear him limb from limb. They tried, and failed. Aggrah was already a fierce combatant and unleashed his built up frustrations on the warriors, killing all five of them before facing Bergol in a stand-off. They seemed evenly matched. Too even. While Aggrah was prepared to fight to the death, Bergol was more interested in survival. Turning quickly, he hacked the children to pieces and slit the mother's throat, laughing. He parried one final blow and then fled back to the tribe, promising to inform them of his betrayal.

Bergol was not so well-loved by the tribe. But they would certainly take the word of a pureblood over his own. He knew, then, that he could never return to the life he had grown accustomed to. Surprisingly, he felt a great burden lift from his shoulder and knew, immediately, that his new life would be dedicated to worship. Although he had only heard about it in passing, he sought out a small seminary devoted to Kord which he had heard could be found amongst a tribe of human nomads. After tracking them for several weeks, he finally found them and was accepted as an initiate.

In order to be better integrated into human society, and to make it harder for the orcs to find him, Aggrah changed his name to the common equivalent, and has since been known only as Rend. He studied with the priests for many months and, while he naturally excelled in the combative aspects of worship, his illiteracy and lack of discipline hampered his studies in other areas. Frustrated at his slow progress, the priests decided that Rend would have to prove on his own that he could master all aspects of the faith. Only then would he be fully accepted into the Church. He was given lessons and materials with which to study and was sent out into the world. It was explained that this was a test. If he was deemed worthy, he would succeed in his lessons and would become a full-fledged priest. If he failed, he would have to worship as an outsider from afar. In the meantime, he was asked to travel, study, and spread the word of Kord. With no particular location in mind, Rend set out.

Tired and hungry, Rend eventually found himself the gates of a small town called Diamond Lake. His studies had been unproductive to this point and he decided that, after a hearty meal, he would try to hook up with an adventuring party in order to take out his frustrations on hapless foes, and to hopefully force someone to help him with his reading. Taking a deep breath, he entered the town and began his search for the nearest tavern.
