My brother and I joined a new campaign last night. I was wondering if the wonderful users of this board could help us in making a two bard team effective?

The concept is that they are twin brother and sister descended from an elven trunamer (a spellcaster that discovers the true name of things, from Tome of Magic) and a human bard with some fey connections. Our parents loved each other very much, but their father's need to research and learn more about Truespeak was almost anathema to their restless mother. Once they were older, she would take them with her on her wanderings and taught them legends, songs, and how to play they're instruments. The brother, Kobol, would con women out of their money and whenever he got caught, be it by an angry husband or the authorities, Thracia would talk them out of killing her brother.

They're both level two half elf bards. Kobol wants to focus more on becoming an archer, and eventually, some kind of bandit king. I was thinking he could multi class into a ranger for the free feats. What prestige classes would be the best for an archer? Maybe a Darkwood Stalker (complete warrior) with some tweaks? His feat is Weapon Finesse.

Thracia, my character, will be more of a spell caster. She already has Spell Focus (enchantment) and I was thinking about multiclassing into a warlock to become an eldritch theurge (complete mage) later on. Would a specialist wizard be a better choice? Her Intelligence is high but not as high as her Charisma. I'm not sure if a sorceror can specialize the way a wizard can, or else I would do that. I was also thinking about just sticking to a straight bard to become a seeker of the song (complete arcane) or taking cleric levels to become a heartwarder (faiths and pantheons). Obviously, I don't know where to take the character. I don't want to stray to far from the original concept of a fast talking bard.

Thanks in advance. You all are the best!

Arcane Archer would likely be a perfect fit for a ranger/bard character, assuming they can qualify for the requirements. If I were to multiclass a bard into an arcane class, I would go sorcerer just to play to that character's existing strengths. Losing specialization isn't a huge loss because 1)a bard already receives a lot of enchantment spells, so just taking Focus (enchantment) can do double duty for both spell lists 2)both spell lists will use Charisma for save DCs, meaning that they will both be just about equally potent and 3)if you're looking to specialize in one school of magic anyways, you're already giving up some of the wizard's vaunted versatility. Being able to cast your chosen spells more often every day can outweigh the wizard class' benefits.

I'm not sure that multiclassing with the caster levels is a good idea at all. It typically comes out very weak, as your low-level spells can't compete with the higher level challenges you face. There have been tons of threads about this already; just throwing it out again for your consideration.

What's the size of the party you're in? A larger party gives you more lee-way, as they don't need you to be optimized as much.

We're Like Simon and Garfunkel, Except "Hot".

Little wierd to say that about you and your brother.

Grand Lodge

For the male, the "Simon" of the party, ranger/ arcane archer sounds great or just straight bard/ fighter.

For the female, the "Garfunkel", look at the Sublime Chord PC in Complete Arcane. Not great on spells but the Song of Arcnae Power Special Ability would fit in nicely to your character concept.

You should of named her Cecilia.

Grand Lodge

You should call the male "Al".

Ugh... you're breaking my heart.

My confidence is being shaken daily....

Curse you all! Now I have that running through my mind!

The Seeker of Song PrC from the Complete Arcane might be good for your character or the Virtuoso PrC from the Complete Adventurer. The Complet Advenbturer has a lot of stuff for bards so that might be something for you to look into.

but only if he calls her betty.

The party is really big- 3 fighters, a cleric, a rogue, a sorceror, and the two bards. The party already has meatsheilds and a blaster, so the bards (who don't get much blasty spells anyway) will just be support magic and ranged attacks.

I really like the arcane archer idea. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind.

The sublime chord is a little weak. While the song of arcane power is a nice ability, I like the songs that the seeker of the song gets more.

I'm still tossing some ideas around. Thanks again for the feedback.

p.s. It's not weird that I acknowledge the fact that my brother and I are better looking than Simon and Garfunkel. And I think I will change her name to Cecilia. xD
