Nothing funky on Friday. Sorry, went to the Rock Allegiance Tour Friday where AIRBOURNE tore it up in a hard rock AC DC type fashion for a half hour. I love these guys and hope they can get longer sets on some big bills or come thru the midland on a small club headlining tour. They deserve it. They got the crowd PUMPED UP!

Yeah cool, I come from the same Aussie town as these guys - they used to serve me my free beers at my gigs, but every time they pop back and visit, they show that they're still the same dudes they were before hitting the big time :)

Went to Worcester Pride yesterday. Most of the acts on stage were, um, a little amateurish (not that there's anything wrong with that), but the last band I saw were quite amazing.

At the moment, just the sounds of crickets outside my window.

Earlier today, the new Neko Case album.

IRON MAIDEN and MEGADETH were in KC and STL this past weekend and I got front row to both on the Dave/Adrian side. One of my alltime favorite concert experiences. Caught an Adrian sweatband. Just missed catching a Mustaine one.

This is their "classics revisited" tour before they go back into the studio. I hope that late next year they begin another tour supporting new material and play somewhere nearby...or close to someone I know and can impose on :)

I cannot express how exciting it was for me to see these two bands!

New Funk! Love these bands!

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears - Sugarfoot

Cocaine 80s - To Tell the Truth

Barrence Whitfield and the Savages - Corner Man

AMON AMARTH put out an amazing EP, "Under the Influence", with their recent LP, "Deceiver of the Gods". These are NOT covers, though you might think so. :)

Burning Anvil of Steel

Snake Eyes
and my favorite two:
Satan Rising

Stand Up to Go Down

Also, the "Better Call Saul" prequel opening theme

A homebrew mix of 70s pop.

Proto-acid house, from Singapore. In 1982. No Indian prog bands, so this will have to do. And it does.

Also:

Eela Craig

In addition:

Angel'In Heavy Syrup, who are my favourite band in the whole world ever at the moment.

Haven't yet done the Eela Craig, but this post lives up to Limey's usual high quality standards.

This personal cover of Schala's Theme from Chrono Trigger, desperately wishing it was longer. There are plenty of longer ones, I just want to hear her voice and that cover for more time. It's gorgeous.

I always think Brubeck sounds too mannered.

He needs to play a bit more like he's had a few drinks and there's someone hot sat on the piano.

I've been listening to lots of Cap'n Jazz lately. It's not actually jazz, and I don't think they're sailors either...

He sounds like what he was--a pianist who studied under 20th-century classical composers.

IIRC, he was the first jazz musician who was featured on the cover of Time magazine. When the issue came out, he was on tour with Duke Ellington and Dave went over to the Duke's room (or car, I seem to remember this being on a train) and apologized profusely.

He was quite the nerd, but I've always dug him.

Right now, Morly Grey, which is a fantastic album. Nice bit of doomy psych.

Also this week:

Dyzan

And

Yezda Urfa - Boris

Been trying to get into US prog, which, generally, is either a) kind of AOR-y or b) really sounds like Yes, judging by what I've heard so far. The album above is an exception, and is super ace.

Not to mention learning to love Elton John, for which thanks to Kirth :)

Did the Eela Craig (or whatever it was called) the other day and it was a pretty good accompaniment to a mid-afternoon's [bubble bubble bubble].

Let's see what I can get through today...

Looked these guys up on the internet and am saddened that I hadn't heard of them before. A Sundazed reissue? I used to be all over this shiznit, and now I need a ([redacted]) Britishiznoid friend on a D&D website to find out about this stuff!

[Mourns how unhip I have become]

Song of Zarathustra - Shakes in Pain

andnoneofthemknewtheywererobots - Instrument

Bluetip - Past Tense

Handsome - Going To Panic

Fireside - Kiloton

Don Caballero - The Peter Crisis Jazz

Slint - Good Morning, Captain

Black Pistol Fire - Suffocation Blues

and GeraintElberion's mention of the crazily named and rocking "andnoneoftheknewtheywererobots" reminds me of another crazily named and rocking band;

We Butter the Bread With Butter - Superfohn Bananendate. A massively popular metal band, judging from the amount of shirts I saw at Wacken in 2012. I wish I had seen them play, but they were on when I was watching something else...dammit! blabla hindsight 20/20, nice story. tell it to Readers Digest.

Kendra Morris covering Pink Floyd

Ive borrowed 3 cds from my library of some guitar rock bands solo/side projects.

Heres the first one. Remember Phil Collen from DefLep? I can totally hear his other band all over this release. Love it! Does a cover of Hendrix "Fire"...not much to write about it, RHCP's cover still better. Neither close to the original though :)

Neal Schon made another solo. I had Late Nite on cassette way back when. I like this guy's riffs!

I also picked up Tom Keifer from Cinderella's solo. Yikes! I used to play Night Songs overandover back in the day. Im glad hes still around and not working construction anymore or hawking Pat's Dogs, but I cant listen to the solo record again.

Got on a Zappa kick and found this old tune. Orange Claw Hammer

Heatwave - Grooveline

Kool and the Gang - Misled...shes as heavy as a chevy...LAWD!

Gene Page - The Stalkwalk

and a little bit of Tragedy by Michael, Andy, Nasty, Sam, and Gyp

As Sweden's Chief Pop Scientist (Prof. Kajehase) has pointed out, 1966-1972 were the peak years for bad sitar solos. Unfortunately, even Gabor Szabo wasn't immune, as a listen to Jazz Raga will show. Still, the regular Gabor-ing is as solid as you'd expect, and there's always Mizrab, from a few years later, with Jack deJohnette, Ron Carter, etc.

Tunez and RPGs

Have been playing in a Rifts game for a couple weeks now. I am playing Francois Mulhollande, a psi-slinger from Free Quebec who is roaming about the New West on his talking robot camel, Bessie.

So far, he has become friends with an Apache Vortex-Dancer (or something) named Of No Consequence, two twin Bavarian juicers, Hans and Franz and Captain Daring the techno-wizard.

So far we have fought two different private security forces, the First Apocalypstic Cavalry, jumped in a magic train to Ciudad Juarez where I had sex with a junkie Psyke, narrowly avoided being sold into slavery, and rescued Sir Rupert, the inept Cyber-Knight, from the gladiatorial games.

Anyway, for the last game, the Dungeon Master (or whatever it's called in Rifts) queued up a fun old cowboy songs playlist.

After about an hour of play, we got ready to roll and go spring Sir Rupert. I was driving an ATV I had stolen from the 1st. Apoc Cav. with a grenade-launcher mounted in the back. Pumping himself up, Francois put in a tape of battle music to get in the zone.

After a while the other two players (a father and son team) revolted and made us listen to Viking metal for the rest of the evening.

Rifts is pretty cool. I've played three games, and I still have no idea how the rules work.

And, finally, some good news, I am back in the zone and replaced my stolen iPod with a much cheaper generic MP3 player that is nowhere near as loud when plugged into my portable work radio, but my quality of work life has been improved immeasurably. For example:

Comets on Fire--Blue Cathedral

Whom some might remember from a Kajehase post a whiles back.

And since this will be the last post of the page, and I want to stick to the rules I set myself above, Monday Morning Jazz Brunch 24 hours early:

Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio

although the album I've been grooving to is a later covers collection, Dedications (although the track order is all messed up and they've got a slow-builder opening the record instead of the lively "Solar").
