Assuming the party fails to destroy the Ulgurstasa before the final battle with Auric's warband, and the party perseveres with Auric & Co.'s help and they defeat the beast, who gets the belt?
Has anybody had to dea with this occurance? How did you do so?
By the end, Auric was nearly dead, and Khellek had fled the battle field the moment the worm survived. With the party still alive, Auric decided that yielding the belt to them would leave him with his dignity intact.

My players failed to stop big ugly from eating Auric. They just never realized that they should protect him. So, it was an apocalypse... hundreds of wights overran the city. And there is a war to get the city back. Every once in a while I have an npc talk of the battle to reclaim greyhawk, it went quite well :)

I had Auric and one of the PC's battle it out, one on one, for the trophy, after they had all banded together to defeat the Ulgurstasta. Khelleck put this idea forward, mainly because he was out of spells, and therefor did not want to fight the PCs. But they had to do something, as there were 18,000 spectators waiting for them in the stands. Talabir came out, after Raknian fled, and had a bit of a huddle with the PCs, Aurric and Khelleck. As I said, Khelleck beat out the PCs on Diplomacy, and thus the one-on-one was fought. Needless to say, Lugdush, the Paladin of Hextor, moped the floor with Auric, and knocked him down after 4 rounds.
As a denoument, Auric was given the position of managing the Free City Arena, when the Mayor of Grayhawk stripped Raknian of it in-absentia.

My group took a two way strategy as some are in the cenoby while others are outside in Free City.
From those who are IN the Changeling morved into Tirra and successfully bluffed and convinced Auric to collaborate.
From those outside one befriended Tirra and convinced her that Aurics life is in terrible danger and that she should help them influence him.
Both were successfull and so they teamed with Aurics band before the final fight. They convinced him about Raknians evil plans, showed him around to the secret chambers (where Bozahl and Ulgur was slain) and came to the conclusion that need to end the fight to come close enough to Raknian to catch him. ´
Once Raknias is cought they would bring some evidence to his involvement in nasty plans (such as the girls ring and others).
So the last fight was a fake which was made dramatic to impress the audiance (using gladiatorial rules) but with the PCs win the belt.

My group needed every bit of help they could get from Auric and Khellek (and the meat shield ability of the flesh golems) to survive the battle with Big Ugly. Truth be told, Khellek was the MVP of that battle, as I rolled well for him on beating the beast's spell resistance. However, by the end of that battle, the flesh golems were destroyed, Khellek and the main party fighter were both unconscious, everybody else was badly wounded and low on spells, Raknian had fled the city - taking the prize money with him, and most of the crowd had fled in panic after realizing this wasn't part of the show. So, none of them really wanted to fight it out anymore and Khellek agreed with the party to call it a draw.
