Vhalantru's eye rays

Shackled City Adventure Path

My party was facing Smoking Eye Vhalantru last night, and we couldn't figure out how the DC for his eye rays got to be so high. Even with the boosted Charisma and the Ability Focus (eye ray), we figured the DC should have been 21. But he had a whopping 32. How did that happen?

Smoking Eye Vhalantru's eye ray DCs break down like this:

Base DC 10
Half Hit Dice: +16
Charisma Bonus: +4
Ability Focus (eye ray): +2

Total: DC 32

He's bad news.

That is bad news! Anyone know what his ray DC is during Lords of Oblivion - I don't have the HC handy.

A have a question a little off the point, so I hope you don't mind respectable Hobbit -

James, or anyone who has played the 'final' or first battle against Vhalantru during LoO, did you find the battle difficult or should I throw in a few minor villians to support the big fella? I understand the answer is farly subjective but I really want this conflict to be as exciting as the anticipation of the event.

Basically, what I mean is, alone is Vhalantru (who is the arguably the most recognisable and memorable encounter of the Path)a bigger enough challenge for the party?

My players are just finishing off Zeniths Tajectory so the encounter is a long way off but I'm curious to know what you think.

Thanks

Well, beholders have that charming ray. Perhaps he decided to "recruit" some help with it. He can charm them to Friendly, then diplomize them to Helpful. What makes this nice is that if the PCs can figure out that his buddies are charmed, then they can dispel it or use Protection from Evil to deal with it. So it adds some problem solving/puzzle element to the scenario.

Hello fellow posters,

could you please take care, not to use SPOILER info in the header of the post. The recent headers can be seen in the message board overview and I know that some players read that.

So anybody playing in Shackled City and having encountered Orbius in Chapter one, will immediately see the connection between him and Valanthru if he sees this header. This kills one of the biggest plot surprises.

If it is possible, maybe this entire thread should be renamed.

Greetings
Deryl

What allows him to add half his Hit Dice to the DC? Is that a standard rule for monster advancement? I've never seen that rule in the Monster Manual. The description of the eye ray says the DC is Charisma-based, but it doesn't mention anything about Hit Dice.

That's how it works for all special abilities for all monsters. The rule in question lives on page 315 of the Monster Manual, at the end of the entry for "Special Abilities."

The only Save DCs that generally don't allow the half HD rule are spells and spell-like abilities. Everythnig else uses this rule:

DC = 10 + 1/2 the creature's HD + the creature's ability modifier

I second Deryl's idea.

Could you guys please change this thread's title name ASAP!

Yes, please change the title. I think "Vhalanthru Has Eye Rays Because He's the Beholder" would be about the only title less ambiguous. Thanks for blowing the surprise for hundreds of players.

I would actually like to see the messageboards split in half to represent a DM / Players split.

Is this really even a resource for players? I mean... the vast majority of people here are looking for help running the SCAP. Personally, I think that any player that comes to these boards is looking for trouble.

I disagree, there's many reasons for players and DMs alike to be on these boards, or Paizo's website. And even if you ARE playing in one game, doesn't mean you're not DMing another, and may inadvertently come across this thread title.

PLUS, every time one of us replies to this, the title comes up on the main Paizo page, and while I trust my players not to go looking through the Shackled City part of the boards, I can hardly ban them from looking at the home page and maybe seeing the title.

And even though most of my players probably wouldnt abuse the information if they make the connection, it will still take away what I hope may be one of the big surprises of the campaign.

I don't fault the original poster for not realising this, but it would be nice if the title could be changed.

Did anyone see that WotC article on beholders, when they changed a lot of the beholder powers? I really liked the changes. Here's the link:

Well, one of my players was spoiled inadvertantly while reading through Lords of Madness for a game he was running. "Vhalantru" was given as a suggested name for beholders.

Oops. I tried to play it off as coincidence, but I'm not sure he bought it.
