I just got back from vacation and had a really odd encounter...
We were travelling through Las Vegas, NM (I am really sorry if you live there) and got a bite to eat at the Pizza Hut. After dinner, I went up to pay. Being the geek that I am, I was wearing one of my Star Wars shirts that says "don't look back" with the picture of Anakin with the shadow of Darth Vader behind him. The conversation with the girl behind the counter went something like...
Girl: "Don't look back at what?"
Me: "Oh, it was kind of an ominous warning from his mother since he becomes Darth Vader."
Girl: "Oh. That's Star Wars, right? Was that a good movie?"
Me: "Well, it kind of depends on what kind of things that you like."
Girl: "Do you collect anything of Star Wars?"
Me: "Yes, a little bit."
Girl: "What do you collect?"
Me: "Mostly books."
Girl: **Blank Stare** -- actually the look that she gave me I will always carry with me. It was kind of a cross between "Why would anyone want to collect books?" and "For that matter, what is a book?"
Me: (After a bit of a moment of silence as she tried to figure out the book thing.) "So do you collect anything?"
Girl: "Oh, Yes!! I collect Pom-Poms. I have red ones and green ones and silver ones and blue ones, and really big ones, and small ones, ..." (and she went on describing her Pom-Pom collection for a good 5 minutes.)
This got me thinking about what other strange things people might collect and are really proud of it. Do any of you know of anyone who might have a really odd collection and yet they are really proud of it? Just curious.

I don't really collect much, just hand-to-hand weapons and medieval type stuff, but nothing of high standards or anything, more just for looks and reference. And to help keep it in the pit.......damn, gotta go. Time for the hose!

Yeah, I collect books for this game I play, it's called Dungeons and Dragons, ever heard of it? It's really fun and cool and stuff!
Art books and comic books are the most typical things I collect. But ever since I found this great papier-mache sculpted lobster that someone had made and forgotten on top of a large cabinet I've been collecting various lobster items. The afore-mentioned papier mache one (with pipe cleaner antennae and legs) will always be my favorite and I've taken it out to social events like weddings and such as a "date". But I've also got a plastic lobster that's more accurate and a Japanese model kit lobster from an obscure Godzilla movie.
Well, apart from the zillion D&D books (all types of role-playing actually) and dragon dice, I collect films... Either on VHS or DVD. I have 200 titles, all in mint condition.

I don't know that I would classify this part of Texas as 'dry'... we're precipitation poor, but humidity rich.
And these past couple of days, the penguins haven't complained. It's been nice and cool.

I used to try and collect movies -- ended up with around 450 or so and then I thought "If I watched one of my movies a day for an entire year, I wouldn't finish them all." I recently traded in around 150 of my old tapes for some DVDs. I have really cut down on the number of movies I buy now.
For my personal collection(s) I try and get things that you would (almost) never see anywhere else. I just recently picked up an old picture book "How the ewoks saved the forest" that was based on the old (awful) cartoon. I have a number of various choose your own adventure books -- Star Wars, Transformers, D&D (based on the old cartoon), etc. I nearly got all the stupid Burger King Star Wars toys (I still can't really stomach Burger King food as a result). I also have a Marvin the Martian shrine of which I haven't bought a single item -- I simply mentioned that I liked the character and people just bought me things because they thought that I would like it.
Books. Lots and lots of books. Any kind of books. My cookbook shelf is full and overflowing, with another three foot stack of cookbooks on the floor next to it. Just of cookbooks. Art books, history books, fiction books, computer books (which have warped the bookshelves they sit on due to the weight), more books please! My fiction shelf is double stacked. I have three separate stacks by my side of the bed of various subjects. The RPG bookshelf, which has D&D and my hubby's Palladium/GURPS stuff, is overflowing and is double stacked with books and dice. My Dragon and Dungeon magazines are neatly sorted and organized, though.
Computer parts, though it's more accidental than intentional. "I'll fix it someday" has lead to a large steamer trunk full of old server boards, CD drives, cables and a large variety of "stuff."

Seriously though, I collect comics, books, and DVDs.
As far as my comics go, I've got quite a few that I'm proud of, including: the entire Wally West run of the Flash (with a whole bunch autographed by Mark Waid), Crisis on Infinite Earths, Batman:The Killing Joke (1st printing), Frank Miller's Dark Knight, nearly the entire run of Neil Gaiman's Sandman, and Kingdom Come (also autographed by Mark Waid).
With my books: I've got lots of Frank Herbert book (not just the Dune novels), and I won't stop until I have them all. I've also taken to acquiring the writings of Lovecraft, and Robert E. Howard. I've got the original versions of the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies, as well as a bunch of other DL books. I've also been expanding my collection of books on myth and folklore. There are lots more, but too much to list.
As far as DVDs, I've probably got about a 150+ movies. Mostly sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, but also a good many war movies, some comedies (Mel Brooks anyone), and a few westerns.
Oh yeah, of course there are the D&D things: Books, dice, adventures, and the magazines.

Dungeon and Dragon Magazine, magazines on vintage cars (own a ´72 Audi 100 myself - similar to this one , mine is silver with blue interior).
Single Malt Scottish Whisky - mmhh!
Once, I collected miniature cars for model railways - they still lie around in a box somewhere.

You da father! You know, there were nights in 5th grade that I woke up in the middle of the night frantically thinking "did I do my math set for tomorrow?!"
I don't collect much. When I was a kid, I was as much of a pack rat as my parents but then one day I suddenly looked at our house and the mess it was and decided to throw out 90% of my junk. Nowadays, I only collect books of the d&d and coffee table persuasion (my novels tend to get loaned out or given away after I read them once), medical paraphernalia (not my choice, I'm a very sick guy) and fantasy artwork on my computer because it doesn't take up any actual space. My personalized screen saver is an endless series of the best fantasy pics I can find (damn you Amy Brown for having a copy-protected site!).
Anything else that I don't use on a regular basis is thrown out or given away.

And, I try very hard to cellect money, but... I don't know... somehow this doesn't seem to work...
And I had never thought that there's a single american alive who haven't seen those movies! I am stunned!!!
Another vote for books. Mostly History, Sci fi, and fantasy, but some others too. Obviously my absurd RPG collection in all of its variations is a collection too. My girlfriend and I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 DVDs, but I don't know if that qualifies as a collection. I also collect UFC events to watch, and Star Trek full seasons.

I'm yet another book-fancier, with thousands of titles awkwardly stacked around the house. They are mostly history, politics and other nonfiction, but I do have a fair amount of novels as well. My RPG collection is narrow, but deep - D&D, Rolemaster and Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I also have far too many CDs, most of them with bands only I seem to like...

Apart tenth D&D books & magazines (& minis), I also collect films.
If I include short feature films / movies, I think I have more than 2,000 movies (about 600 to 700 DVDs)...
And they're from the beginning of the movie history (several hundreds of short & long feature silent movies, from Hitchcock, John Ford, Chaplin, Keaton, Walsh, Fritz Lang, Murnau, Stroheim, Harold Lloyd, Lubitsch, ...) to movies like "Spiderman" 1 & 2 or "million dollar baby"...
I just love movies (even more than RPG !).
If I add the 500+ CDs we both own with my wife, about 250+ european comic books, and more than 500 books, we have a house full of various cultural things... and soon the baby to come will mess this up !, it's great !!

State quarters, but in an erratic fashion (I won't spend them if I get them, but I don't do the true collector thing of getting a set from the mint and all that jazz). I always chew on the idea of collecting coins because I find them fascinating (valueless objects that are the ultimate symbol of a government's power), but it's too expensive and the act of collecting isn't particularly fulfilling in and of itself.

1..I no longer collect DVD's and have sold most of what i have.
2..I no longer collect music on CD. Will keep them till i die.
So, i guess you can say that i am getting better.

Money, of the foreign variety. Not actively, since I left the military, but I got a girl I know who was going to England to bring me a pound, and a friend of mine went to Iraq, and he brought me an Irish Euro and a Saddam dollar (not sure what the unit of currency is/was in Iraq, but I figure any money with a picture of Saddam on it was not long for this world anyway). Anytime I stumble across foreign money, I just put it away.
I have a few other "mundane" collections, but I don't go after autographs much anymore, especially since the prices keep going up, though if I buy a CD at Dragon-Con and the artist(s) is/are willing to sign it, then that's cool.

Costa Rica has the prettiest damn money on earth. They got dolphins and sharks on their money, and it's real colorful.
Maybe they should put some rainbows and unicorns on it too for ya, ya big Puss! ;) Or maybe some fwuffy wittle bunnies!

I don't really collect anything nowadays, it just so happens that I have lots of books and comics and music and movies...but since I just pick what happens to strike my fancy and don't try to be completist or anything, I don't really count that as collecting.

I collect wine and wine paraphernalia, those football helmets from quarter machines, and boxes, tins and other containers. Lame, huh? *grin*
I think that you will find most roleplayers collect books, seeing how most readers are attracted to roleplaying. Or is that the other way aroud ;) I also collect atlases, maps are so cool. There is also a pile of plastic tubs that are stuffed with all kinds of action figures(GI Joe,Star Wars, Transformers, Voltron, ETC.)just sitting around collecting dust. My favorite is antique teapots and candlesticks.

I've been moving too much to collect things, so I try not to, but certain things seem to collect in my home anyway, necessitating more labor on my part to move them. Aside from the inevitable and growing collection of D&D paraphenalia, I've managed to collect a huge library of books (occupational hazard for an academic), audio tapes and CDs (I still have several hundred casette tapes--rock, blues, classical, and quite a few homemade tapes made of old vinyl LPs--collected in the days before I had a CD player), and maps and atlases. I probably ought to rid myself of some of it, but can't seem to do it. For the last year I've embarked on a project of listening to all of my old audio tapes (I'm only up to the M's) with the intent of weeding out some of the stuff I don't listen to often and am not very interested in any more, but I found that actually there was very little that I no longer like and actually want to get rid of.
Dungeon mags... first and foremost. I have only kept the core sourcebooks as the editions have progressed as well.
Beer... I try to drink at least 2 new beers a week. I've easily drank over 1000 different brands.
Hip hop CDs are my other guilty pleasure.

Other than the norm here (books, DnD stuff); I collect pin-up art.
Started with Betty Page while in the US Navy. I was a machine gunner in Persian Gulf Senior and named my M2 "Betty" and had her painted onto the back of my body armor. I prefer the glamour and bikini over nude and other stuff though. I have a pretty good collection and even some originals that cost me a tad of cashola.
From there, I went to other pin-up stuff including some real old (WWII era) posters.
I have a collection of propoganda from wars too.

Rock on! Any Vargas stuff in there? Vargas is good stuff, along with any of the Bomber nose art stuff. :D
