Any Subscribers Have Issue 139 yet?

I am a subscriber and haven't recieved mine yet, but I don't know how long it takes for the magazine to arrive after it ships on average. My account says the issue shipped on August 22nd, and I am not in any particular hurry except that my gaming group wants to start the campaign this weekend and I am DMing. That means at best I have 5 more days it could come before the game starts at 5 on Saturday. So if any subscribers are out there listening, I was wondering how long it has taken for the Mags to arrive after they ship?

As a side note, if anyone does have it already, then I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for something I could run for my players before hand if the Magazine isn't here by Saturday to sort of fudge and buy myself an extra week.

I live in Wa and I have not seen a sine of it.

For me it typically takes about a week and a half to two weeks.

What is the averge level of your group?

Brent, do you have a copy of the Savage Tide Player's Guide? If so, there's plenty of material there for the PCs to have fun learning about the city. Here's some ideas:

1) Let them sign up for a match in the gladiatorial arena in Champion's District to earn a little gold and get their name out there. It makes them more clearly identifiable for when they receive their first adventure hook into "There Is No Honor".
2) Give them a little brush with the seedy element of the city like a pick pocket attempt, a run in with local thugs, a drinking contest that turns into a bar fight with them caught in the middle.
3) A tour of the city via gondola. Not a whole lot of action, but allows you to describe what's what in the city and get them more interested in their environment.

I have ordered the Players Guide, but haven't gotten it yet. In truth I am not sure it will even be here before the weekend either, as I didn't purchase it until yesterday. I had planned to buy it towards the end of last week, but then they sold out for awhile, and I didn't get my order in until they got some more. Those aren't bad ideas, and if I don't have the Player's Guide before Saturday, then I will likely wing it a bit but I really like the idea of having them sign up for a fight in the Arena. If I don't have my players guide by Friday or so, I might post again and ask for a bit of specifics on the arena so that I can run that followed up by a brush with some thugs trying to steal the gold they just won or something similar. Hopefully the magazine will come and I won't have to improvise too much, but I will just have to see.

Thanks for the ideas.

Maybe you could run them through some of the Champions trials that were in Dungeon 138? Those are a series of tricks/obstacles to overcome. Not dependent on level. Maybe this could be how they meet. None of them has gotten picked for a team, so they decide to join up and try together.

That's a really cool idea, Waltero. Challenge of Champions to take place in the arena in Champion's District. Synergy, baby!

Well, your Player's Guide shipped today and subscription issues generally show up to US addresses within two weeks, so it's pretty likely that you'll get one or the other (or, most likely, both) by this weekend.

Good luck and good gaming!

I'm freakin baffled that it was mailed on the 8/22 and has yet to arrive at my house. If I sent a post card to my brother in Arizona he have it three days( I'm in NJ) magazines however must be Sled dogged across Canada to god knows where. at which point they are loaded on a plane that for some reason flys them around the world, then Parachutes them down into kanas where postal retirees gather them up and take three day naps before sending them off to subscribers!

I just can't wait for this issue anymore!

Paizo Employee Creative Director

It's true. Magazines are more or less shipped at the slowest possible rate by the Post Office. In addition, they have the lowest priority for mail, so if you have a busy mail weekend, they're the things that get pushed back for tomorrow.

We just got in our office copies today, which is also later than normal. But they DO exist, so at least that's good news!

Since I wont be getting my copy until September 13th when it hits the stores and we are playing the following Sunday, I plan on running the new character through the Champions Trials. I will give them a chance to work out their characters abilities and ease them into the city with having to rush through the first adventure.

using a post card (third class) stamp or a first class stamp? Because if third class mail has sped up that much, I need to quit buying first class stamps.

Thanks Cosmo, I will be keeping an eye out for it. I live in Manhattan Kansas, so I am not exactly in a metropolitan hub, and I know that in general things take a little longer to get here via mail than to other places. If I don't have either by Saturday, I will likely run the Champions Games, followed up by a small tournament in the arena and finishing up with a brush with some thugs trying to steal some of the gold etc. that the party earned in the first two bits. That should buy me another week for the two publications to get here if they aren't already by the weekend. Thanks for looking into it though. I hope I didn't come across as complaining or anything. I have been thrilled with every issue of the mag I have and I wasn't really trying to complain about it not being here yet, I was just looking for suggestions on what to do with the group if they aren't. Thanks again!!

*Stops holding breath waiting for #139*

Well if no one has it yet I guess I won't expect it to arrive too soon in beautiful Oriskany Falls NY, especially since I just did an address change a few weeks back.

Sigh!

I just checked and your address change was processed in time for issue #139. So, assuming it was changed to the correct address, the address change should not affect (effect? I can never keep those straight) the delivery time. Which means that your issue should be showing up any day now.

: )

Thanks--didn't mean to put you to extra work, but very much appreciate Paizo's great attentiveness to customer needs! I'll now address my prayers to whatever deity considers the USPS to be in his portfolio!

Arrgh the suspense is killing me... I want it now so I can see if I am going to plot a coup to overthrow the current DM's FR game! WHY DO YOU TORMENT ME SO?!

... Okay, I'm calm now. Deep breaths... seriously though, I hope it arrives soon..

well here in Canuckland its been about 10 days so looks like I have to wait another 10 days...I have to say I haven't looked forward to an issue like this one in a long time..I picked up 124 after the fact but I imagine the feeling would have been the same back then.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

Thursday passed without any sign of the 'awaited with bated breath' Issue 139 in damp south eastern Ohio but seeing as others haven't recieved it as of yet I'll not start worrying. I am once more duly impressed at the attentiveness of the customer service from Paizo. Just one more reason (Among many) to never let my subscription lapse.

I haven't recieved mine yet either, and I am in WV. I did an address change as well, and I am dieing to start the new path. The last one is what got me to start subscribing again to both Dungeon and Dragon Magazines after a few years without them. Just as a question for the admins at Dungeon, will any of the material in the Players Handbook for the Savage Tide be given in either Dragon or Dungeon for subscribers? I just spent $80 to resubscribe and I would prefer not having to buy a suppliment to fully enjoy something I just payed for (only have an issue of each thus far).

We're going to put a PDF of the Savage Tide Player's Guide up online for free in a short while, but the only way to currently get a hard-copy of the product is to buy it at paizo.com.

It has to be some deity with chaos and procrastination as domains, I´d say :-) (with apologies to all the hard working post office clerks).

Cripes, my heart is practically racing and I'm wiping drool off myself in anticipation of this mag. I *need* to know what the shadow pearls do..!!!

Regarding affect / effect, the way I remember it is "cause and effect"...affect is "to have an influence on" (i.e. a "cause") and effect is, quite literally, "the result". In this case, I believe you're looking for effect, as the change of address should not result in a change of delivery time.

But what the h3ll do I know--?!? ;)

Well, it's Friday morning and no sign of the mag in my mailbox - like a chucklehead, I jumped the gun and told my players to get ready to begin the STAP this weekend... well; if it doesn't show up today I guess we can all just crack open some beers and watch football instead.

Always good to have a backup plan, see. ;)

It could be worse, it could have happened when there wasn't football available as the substitute. Then life would have stunk..:)

Yes, but I would have liked to have read it before I started my big football weekend (of doom and destructiones as my son and daughter would say), which unfortunately, started last night.

I am just looking forward to getting a chance to see any if any of my mail is at the house. I have been in Korea for the past three weeks, so I know I have to be patient. It also makes the reward much sweeter for my return.

But I can imagine everyone is ready to get right in there, I have to either find a group in the DC area about to start it, or just live through you guys on the boards.

Stefan, although such a deity may have a chaotic bent, I find his followers tend to be nearly always Lawful Evil. "Do not dissent, follow all regulations, strict regimens to allow for 15 minute breaks every 1.3 hours worked, independent thought discouraged, etc."

I suspect the domain power granted would be endure elements:
"Neither rain nor sleet nor snow will keep us from our appointed rounds."

Invisibility to Animals would have to be a Domain Spell. Or is it Hide From Animals? I can never remember.

If I don't have issue #139 in my afternoon mail when I get home, I'll probably steal this idea and one of the one's I suggested earlier as a way to bring in one more player into my group and thus the party. Should be a lot of fun and a way to stall for time. I have the rough material, but don't want to get too ahead of myself without having the adventure in print and whatever changes were made between draft and publication.

I haven't been this excited in a long time!

~grumbles~ You all are luck to recieve it that quickly! My local game store will not have it untill September 8th at the earliest. ~grumble, grumble, grumble~ However, like Steve Greer, I am going to get the players hooked up by other ways, then have them enter into the STAP.

Dark Archive

Going into Saturday I still don't have either the magazine or the player's guide. So it's time to ask for some things from my fellow gamers out there who have some of this stuff, so I can start my players this week and hopefully get to the "real" adventure next week. First off, who is in charge of the Arena? Are there any nefarious sorts associated with it? How large is it? In what district in Sasserine is it? My plan is to start off with the party being drawn to Sasserine for the 6th Annual Challenge of Champions. In my game, this is going to be a 3 day event that draws folks from all walks of life who want a shot at fame and gold. Anyone can enter, from farmers to true adventurers. The only stipulation is that contestants enter in teams of at least 3. The first day is designed to test their cunning, as they are put through a series of 6 puzzles (taken directly from Challenge of Champions VI in Dungeon 138). The 6 teams with the highest scores in the puzzle day, advance to day 2, which is a test of their teamwork. In this portion of the test, each team is pitted against either another team or animals and monsters brought to the arena for just this purpose. In this section, I intend to have the party fight a pack of wolves lead by a Worg. All groups that win in the second day, are then given a test of their courage on day 3. On this day, the party is given the choice to battle one of the arena's greatest champions. In this case, an Ogre Barbarian known for dismembering opponents that challenge him. I intend to have 4 teams "win" on day 2 and 2 of those will "back-out" without facing the arena champion, but the other team will square off against him, and I intend to vividly describe how the Ogre tears them to pieces in a matter of moments. Then they will face off against him. I trust my players will go through with the battle which I expect to seriously push them. By it's conclusion I expect them to level to 2nd. Then they will be declared winners and given an award of 300 gp each and medals as described in Dungeon 138. Afterward, a feast in the winners honor will be thrown in the arena that will be open to the public, and after the feast I intend to have the heros waylaid by a couple of local thugs looking to score some quick gold off the exhausted heros. After dispatching them and resting for the night, I intend to conclude with the party recieving the letter from the Vanderboren noble asking for their help because of their success in the champions games. At which point, I intend to end the session.

In any event, does anyone who has the stuff see any problems with this scenario? Anything that doesn't tie in very well with the first adventure? If so I could use the help, as I don't want to derail the first adventure completely before I even have a chance to get it and read it. Additionally, I wonder if I am letting the group get too much XP before the first adventure starts, thus making it too easy by comparison. I just want something to fill the evening with, but I want them to really enjoy the full flavor of the STAP once I can actually start it.

Any thoughts and answers to my questions would be most welcome.

Brent, that sounds good to me. I to had planned to run my test subjects, er, players through Challenge of the Champions as well. I am just not sure if they will be level 2 by the end of it. You do have some good ideas, however.

As for Sasserine, it houses about 15,000 souls. The city is on a river (or the ocean)and if you think of Venice, then you have an idea of the place. Unfortunatly, my players guide is at home and I am working late.

Tell us how it goes for you, Brent. I have a feeling it will be at least 2 to 3 weeks at the earliest that my undead fodder, er, players will be getting together, since another of the group wants to run something else for a bit. However, that is a good thing, since it will alow me time to get things together.

There are only three lines about the Arena in the backdrop article; the only real information there is that the arena is called "Sasserine Arena," it holds gladiatorial fights sponsored/operated by Zelkarune's Horns, and these fights are most often not to the death (and are often used to settle debts).

Nothing in the above post looks like it'll screw up Adventure 1, or even connect with it in any way.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to fleshing out the adventure for my Sunday peeps... (yeah, 139 was in my mailbox when I came home, O glorious day)

And if anyone should level in your pre-STAP scenario, don't worry - the adventure is super-easily scalable (which I have to do myself, since we ran Mad God's Key while waiting for 139).

Brent,

What you described should work. The Arena is attempting to build a reputation, so holding a mock Challenge of Champions would be just the thing that they would do.

The arena is owned and operated by Zelkarune's Horns, a large mercenary company. The leader of the Horns is Zasker Grankus (NG male human barbarian 6/fighter 2).

Fights are generally not to the death when it's against other people (fights against monsters are a different matter). It sounds like a good way to promote teamwork and get the player's linked up before the adventure - and gives Lavinia a reason to hire them in the next session.

Contributor

Hey, Brent, if you award very light xp for the CoC VI events up to the wolves/worg and fight with the ogre, I think you'll be all right with the rest of the actual adventure. Your players will probably be closer to their next level than the average group, but that should be fine.

When you say you're going to pit them against an ogre barbarian, you don't actually mean an ogre with levels in barbarian as in the CR 7 example in the Monster Manual do you? Or are you talking figuratively as in ogre "brute"? The base CR 3 ogre should be quite challenging all by himself. If you've already thought of this, I apolozige, but if you are using a normal ogre for the fight, you should consider reducing his hit points to make it a little more doable for a group of 1st-level newbies. You know... wounds from the previous suckers, er... opponents.
