It's only a model

Liberty's Edge

So, who else has done models for the SCAP? I did one for chapter 4's first encounter on the streets of Cauldron. For that, I did a mockup of the street from the map, with a ramp going down to the next street. I'm thinking of doing the shrine (area 5) as well, since it's such a nice space with multiple levels, and really lends itself to 3D thinking.

Sadly, my street model wasn't done for the adventure, and there were still some buildings with styrofoam roofs, but that's not so bad, since I'll be re-using this map in chapters 5 and 7. I'll have it fully finished by then, but of course then it won't be exactly what the book had laid out, so I'll have to customize some of the encounter to it.

I use the Hirst Arts molds to make walls, floors and such. Right now, I have enough made to make the big chamber in The Whispering Cairn (AoW). Eventually, I'd like to have enough to do the entire thing.

I also tend to work better when I have something to work towards. Most of my walls were made when I ran an Eberron adventure. I made models of the maps

Grasp of the Emerald Claw...ultimate goal is to make a model of the temple at the end...

Yes I am insane.

I would like to create models for various areas of the game but its a very time consuming endeavor. However, had I the time, I would love to model areas of places where major events happen or where the PCs go to often.

check out some of the models I made for some of the more dramatic scenes in my campaign

For LoO I made gauths and a beholder fig from appropriate sized styrafoam balls, pipe cleaners for eye stalks, and small stick on eyes. Bases were made from wooden bases and sticks and ballasted with modeling clay. I painted them with a stucko like spray paint. My players loved the Gauths and will see Vhalantru this Tuesday.

I also do the Hirst Arts thing and am currently working on carving, making molds of and building a rough-hewn stone cavern set. The molds are made, I have poured a bunch of pieces and I am testing them for flexibility and overall usage. They look good. When I finish them and take some picks I will try to figure out how to post them somewhere and leave a link to 'em. My ultimate goal is to produce sets for sale (3x3 corridors with some room builder pieces, similar to Bruce's basic dungeon sets.).

Dark Archive

I've only done a few models so far, but the players loved them. Mine were straight forward. The first prop I created was a battlemap for the umber hulk encounter. I enlarged the map to 1" squares and printed it out using a large format color printer.

The second model I created was for the Kuo-toa shrine. I enlarged the maps to 1" squares, printed them out, and glued them to stiff cardboard and then assembled them into sections. The problem that I ran into with this model is the characters all ran under the platform and it was hard to move the miniatures. If the the levels would have been a bit further apart it would have been better.

I also created a battlemap for the tax riot scene using the same method.

Grand Lodge

Being an experienced architectural model builder I found several sites, including WoC's, that supplies templates for cutout paper models of buildings. I basically recreated a 3D version of the neighborhood of Magma Ave. Northwest using various paper models. It took me a few weeks to build all the models but was my gaming group ever surprised to see 3D buildings rather than squares & rectangles drawn on a battle mat! And I'm still building more buildings and other various structures for the riot scene in a later SC adventure. At the rate I'm going I'll probably end up with enough buildings for a scale model of the entire city of Cauldron!

Hey, roll4 - if you don't mind, would'ye share some of those sites for paper models? I have all the WotC ones, of course, but you alluded to others...?

Here's some places to get you started. The FiddlersGreen site has some free ones -just search around a bit. Google "paper model buildings" and you'll find tons of stuff!
