Rautheene?

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

Reading through issue #344's A Dark and Sormy Knight, I'd like to know who Rautheene is. Greenwood mentions that there's 'two mafges of Oerth', but she's commented on about her research on Dalamar. So can someone help me? Thanks.

She was introduced as Mordenkainen's apprentice back when the "Wizards Three" articles were a semi regular Dragon feature, to fill in as the third wizard, after the DragonLance setting was no longer an AD&D setting.

So she has been around for a while. She is from Oerth, but Mordenkainen set her to the task of finding out what happened to Krynn, and by extention, Dalamar. The funny thing is, the implication in the article is that she has finally found some wizard from Krynn, but still hasn't found anything useful about Dalamar.

Yeah, she's from Oerth but has a really Forgotten Realms-ish name.

I wish they'd dropped her and brought in a wizard from another setting. If Krynn is now off-limits because of events in the novels, a wizard from Mystara or even Eberron would have made things much more interesting.

Ru isn't realy a great fit anyway IMO, Dalamar (and breifly Raistlin before him IIRC) was an evil wizard, which fit perfectly because Elminster is a good wizard, and Mordy is a neutral wizard... thus you had 3 settings and three ethos covered in each article... with Ru you lose a setting, and she while no doubt comical, is clearly not evil... I Vote that if any Wizards Three articles get made in the future they dump her and toss Bargle the Infamous in there as 3rd wizard.

Is Bargle a wizard from Mystara/Known World? The name vaguely rings a bell....

That's a good point about having a good, evil and neutral wizard in the mix.

I can't put my finger on it, but I thought the new Wizards Three instalment was lacking something - a bit lacklustre, maybe, like the author's heart wasn't really in it.

I quite agree! They could possibly even add one of the (very few) powerful wizards from Eberron - say Mordaine the Fleshweaver, or Vol herself (THAT would be trippy!) Anyway, they're both Evil (with a capital E).

I don't know what this article was all about anyway. Was it supposed to be funny? It made me yawn... This is one of the worst things Greenwood ever brought to paper. I found it a total waste of space (i was very disappointed by the whole anniversary issue because besides the Ebberon- & ecology-articles and class acts there wasn't anything useful to the game within these pages). What did you guys like about this?

The Wizards Three articles were, I think, Greenwood's way of giving the fans a little treat. These are all beloved characters (with the possible exception of Rautheene), and to see them together in an article was always a treat. The spells they usually offered were a bonus.

All in all, I have to agree with almost everyone else, this episode of the Wizards Three just didn't have the appeal of the old ones. I say bring back Dalamar! No one can ever take his place, especially not some wannabe from Eberroon.

Look in the old red Basic D&D box, that´s his earliest claim to fame. He is the enemy in the introductory adventure, killing the NPC cleric Aleena.

He ended up as being the court wizard of Baron Ludwig van Hendricks of the Black Eagle Barony in Karameikos, gaining quite a few levels in between...

I knew Bargle sounded really damn familiar. Was he in the adventure "Mystery of the Snow Pearls" or something like that?

I don´t know for sure, but I don´t think so. "Mystery of the Snow Pearls" was one of those Solo adventures with the red plastic for reading obscured entries, and you played an elf somewhere up north, IIRC. I never played it through.

But in "Legacy of Blood", there is an evil Wizard called Barzan. Perhaps this is the one you had in mind ?

No, I'm pretty sure it was Bargle.

Heh. "Snow Pearls" is fun. I should try to see if my brother still has it.

Ah, please don't get me wrong. This is just a single issue i was a little disappointed of. No big deal. I enjoy your wonderful magazine every month and it is getting better and better. It is nearly impossible to please everyone and this issue had just too much fiction for my taste. And i really enjoyed 'Voyage Of The Princess Ark'. The planar dragons were cool. Sorry, i forgot they were in said issue. Keep up the good work!
