The Koga was waiting for somebody to notice this, yes, the real world could be considerd "high magick" but it's also "low power" magick is just not convient most of time, requiring loads of time, work, precision, patience, or alternatively risks.. (Like when teenagers use black magick..)
Spells as we know them are more like incantations as expressed in unearthed arcana..
Speaking of which, The Koga has a question, is it ok to post homebrew classes? The Koga has yet to see any, and he doesn't know where else to go to get some feedback on a homebrew world he's working on which has all new base classes (replacing all the old ones..)

... I like a high magic/ high power game. (in real life too, just check out a pda, a cell phone that can take pictures and send them two thousand miles away, a computer that lets me write to any one in the world with a translater program... a truck with 748 movement speed) I run a iron heros arcana evolved eberronesque campaign. with a fair amount of magic. Not everything is a plus one magic sword but... a goblin with 28 attribute points is gonna be entertaining. For that matter four goblin sorcerers with mirror image scrolls and casting scorching ray was entertaining too. There are other ways of boosting the power of low level monsters with out magic items but it is a LOT more work, easily tripling the time to create an adventure. on the other hand it can be a hoot to play and thats what it is all about, everyone having fun.
Did you happen to notice that a "house" in the PHB costs 1000 gp? That comes out to 20 pounds of gold which in todays market is about $500 an ounce, bringing the house to about $140,000? How am I supposed to aford that on my 1 sp per day salary?

You build it yourself...Believe it or not, you can scavenge quite a bit of building material if you know where to look, even in today's era. When I lived in San Antonio, there used to be house lots where mobile homes had been taken and were relatively cheap. Some of them had fire or water damage, so you'd need to get it back up to code before you were actually able to live in it.
In many old cities, building usually involved a lot of recycling from any nearby ruins, especially for worked stone because of the labor involved in quarrying it.

i have to admit that i'm a high magic gamer myself. but my party needs that to survive. when i get started, i have atendency to throw too many critters at the party. not that i'm trying to be cruel, i just don't consider EL when i'm thinking up encounters. besides that, i love dealing with non-standard races as pc's and villians. In my last campaign, the fire genasi, the elf, and a human all had a common drow ancestor that none of them knew about, but that earned them the emnity of a powerful draegloth (sp)/cleric, who happened to be the long dead (and now a good lich) drow's nephew. i introduced them to Ebondeath right as they reached 6th level, and when all of the details finally came out at about 11th level, i thought the party was going to die from shock. i had 'em running scared for 5 level, never really knowing which way to turn. it was great fun for me. i even got to advance Ebondeath to a (very) minor diety for a time, until the party completed the Bastion of Souls adventure, and then hunted him down for good. sure they had tons of resources, but i made them use those resoures to get what they wanted, and by the time i was through all they wanted was to backstab Ebondeath, nuke him til he glowed, and piss on the ashes.
we're using the Phargos/ Gith campaign right now. i'm setting it in my homebrew, and i'm wiping out existing empires. one thing i don't mind is changing my world radically. every Gith comes with a min. of masterwork stuff. You want the party to get rid of an item? easy! make that +4 or +5 weapon on the random chart a +1 Marrow Crushing (CON dmg) Flesh Grinding (att on its own when released) dagger, and the party will drop it like its hot. (check out the Book of Vile Darkness) Cover the armor with holy symbols to an evil god or demon lord, heck just make the item so darn useful that they have to get rid of it. I once gave the party an item that granted +1 Luck to AC, saves, att, dmg, and skills. The party got rid of it at first opportunity to avoid being hunted down by other more powerful parties. i've never had a problem with handing out magic that was too powerful because my gamers know that if i think i can take it away i will.
something else that helps is to get players interested in their own gear. if they can find an artificer or cleric or wizard that is willing to enchant their stuff, so much the better. it keeps them dumping a steady stream of cash into exsisting items to make them better than abandoning their items when the newer model comes along. my group personalizes their equipment at low levels with a minor enchantment or two, and blamo! you couldn't get them to sell it for a dragon's hoard.

and while i'm at it, create your own item for pete sake. the DMG has guidlines for item creation. the easiest way to make magic new again is to surprise the players with what something does. or put it on a non-standard item. a cleric might never give up his bracers of health +2 if he hopes to get a periapt of wisdom.

Pisces74 |

The Pisces74 perfers really low magic, with a dash of medium when it comes to the "Captians of evil." The orc cleric of Grummsh is going to ned some extras if for no other reason then to keep subordinates subordinate. Who cares about the help? most of the time they're easily replaceble and dead orcs don't eat, and make for some great zombie monsters

High magic. I collect magic, actually. I've bought otherwise uninteresting settings just for their magic systems. I have a Glantri-esque setting (currently on hold) where Everyone Of Note is a gestalt Wiz or Sorc/Something. Heighten Spell and Eschew Materials feats are free, Wizards don't have to take Scribe Scroll as a 1st-L bonus feat, Wizards get a bonus feat at pretty much every level, Magic Weapon lets the caster mimic *any* +1 enhancement, and any +1 enhancement can be the first one on a weapon.
Then, of course, I sent them into a remote wilderness...
