So I just read on the Sci-Fi Channel's website that the Jim Henson Co. is going to film a sequel to the Dark Crystal. They are teaming up with the same animation studio that did Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The new movie will be a mixture of puppetry and CGI. They are even getting Brian Froud back to do character design. It will apparently be set a couple of 100 years after the original movie and be called Power of the Dark Crystal.
While I love the original I am leary of a sequel. At least they will probably have a lot of the same folks working on this one (Brian Froud and the folks from the Henson Co.), with just enough new blood to make things interesting. Anyway, I can't wait to hear more about this.
Incidently, I have the Dark Crystal on DVD. There is a behind the scenes documentary on their that shows them filming some of the scenes. In particular, I'm thinking of scenes with Ulgra (spelling?), the old crone who could pull her eye out. Frank Oz did the puppet work for the character and would preform the character's lines as well. They voiced the lines over later, but it was weird to hear Ulgra sounding more like Grover. Near...Far...he he he. Just thought I'd share.

I like the original, too. Interesting news, but sequels are a tricky thing. Most of the time, they suck - a lot. Highlander, anyone ?

That is my basic fear. Still, like I said earlier, at least it is the Henson Co. that is taking the lead. I would think there are a lot of the original folks still working there. I'm pretty sure that Frank Oz is still around.
The truth, of course, is that it was a sad day when Jim Henson went to that big puppet stage in the sky. He was a creative genius and truly dedicated to his craft.

Sequals dont always suck
Aliens - different genre, same universe, equal but different to Alien (though after that it al goes downhill)
Empire Strikes Back - I know "part of a planned trilogy" but it still counts
Terminator 2 - This movie shows that waiting 15 odd years to do a sequal can actaully pay off.

There was only one!
Oh, and it was nice to see that they finally got around to making a third (modern) Batman movie last year.
Bat-shark repellant anyone?

PS for the record I liked Matrix Reloaded, they posed a lot of interesting questions that died in a hail of CG in Revolutions.
