I want to start this thread to (hopefully) collect the ideas for the ecology of... articles in one place. Perhaps with some sort of poll at the end of it ?
I would like to see more articles on the "basic" humanoid races, like orcs, goblins, gnolls, bugbears, ogres and so on, like the hobgoblins in issue 309.
I liked that one very much, kudos to Terry Edwards for it (even if I´m late for this...)

I'm fairly sure some of these may have been done, but here's my ideas.

How much are ecology writers bound by ecologies published for earlier editions of the game?
Wes has posted elsewhere that a query for anything previously done is subject to far greater scrutiny, and that submitting for anything that appeared in the last 100 issues or so for ecologies didn't stand a much chance of getting in. He also posted a definitive list of ecologies that have appeared in the magazine, to save himself from us swamping him with such things. Sadly it has sunk into the archives, but if you search under Wes's name, you'll probably be able to turn it up. (sorry, not good at that whole url linking thing, or I'd find it for you).

I'm glad this thread is getting some attention; I've got a few ideas perking away... Thanks for the link, as well. I went and read the old thread, and that just added to my inspiration. By the way, did anyone like the old Monster Hunters ecology articles? Another poster referred to them as the "Fiction and Footnotes" style. I liked the Monster Hunters, and enjoyed the articles, but I detest footnotes. I wouldn't mind seeing the Monster Hunters' return, but I'd rather the crunchy parts were sidebarred or collected at the end of the article (maybe endnotes with full-size text). Dragon has had enough complaints about fonts, pitch, and readability without returning to the teeeeeny-tiny footnotes of yore. Just my $0.02!

I love the faerie dragon. In fact, the same faerie dragon (named Mortimer :D ) appears in every one of my campaigns. :) But I don't think there's a WotC 3.x version of the little critters yet.
There is in the Dragonomicon. It doesn't do age catagories or anything like previous versions, but it's there.

While of course your luck may vary, I have pitched and had rejected both an effort for a feature article returning faerie dragons to true dragon status and an ecology of the faerie dragon.
That said, every query focuses on different things and I'd certainly welcome someone else successfully getting the faerie dragon featured.

From your list, BOZ, my favorites are the firbolg and the werebear. The firbolg always inspired me with its Celtic/Norse kind of flavor, and the LG werebear is sort of the lycanthropic odd-man-out. Just so you know, the lizard king gets a pretty good (almost ecology-like) treatment in the FR book "Serpent Kingdoms." Sorry, though, faerie dragons aren't my cup of tea.

Good thread.
Personally I think that Ecology articles to do with Demons and Devils would be fascinating and I can't recall any in the recent issues of Dragon.
I would like to see them focus on the classic monsters, ones that have been around since the beginning of the game and haven't received as much attention as perhaps they should.
On another note, it was nice to see the resurrection of the Xvart back in issue 339, and it got me thinking that it would be cool to see an Ecology article written on one of them.....

I noted some fey in your list... just note that you need to make these especially compelling. Wes is willing to run fey, but considers them, for the most part, pretty boring. He needs to know they won't be in your article to get it by the first hurdle. It can be done... I have faith in your efforts.

Has there ever been an Ecology of the Naga. That could be pretty cool. Although with all the different types of Naga it could also be reeeeeaaaaallllllyyyyy looooooonnnnnngggg. Sorry, couldn't resist.

The Dark Naga has been done, and most serpent races, including the naga, have been treated in Serpent Kingdoms.
Sphinx was in issue 244
Manticore was in issue 153
Stirge was in issue 239 (and prior to that in issue 83)
All of those issues were some time ago, but the existence of a prior article can make it much more difficult to get an ecology article past Wes.

Personally I think there's a ton of MM3 stuff that could use some love. Though the later MMs seem to be marginalized somewhat so I don't know that the guys at Dragon are super keen about dipping into them. Nonetheless here's my picks:
-Gulgar
-Astral Stalker
-Skindancer
-Geriviar
-Lhosk
-Mindshredder
Likewise there's some monsters in the Miniature's Handbook I would be thrilled to find an ecology article on.
-Crucian
-Equiceph
-Kruthik
-Nothic
-Phargion

As a twist, how about users guides for undead and constructs? It would bring to the fore not only some lesser known creatures, but creatures that could be player created, and theme in with the new Eberron setting. examples include
Create crypt thing (4th level necromancy)
Create Baneservent (4th level necromany)
Create Fell beast (4th level alteration)
Otherwise cast another vote for faerie dragon.
