Dual weapon Duelist: Loophole or Illegal

Rules Questions

My question is really about the guantlet and how it is treated for the Duelist prestige class.

Is the guantlett considered a weapon if worn in the off hand?

(I had a build in mind that doesn't so much dual weild as it uses a defending guantlett to increase AC)

EDIT:

Same question but for the monk. Can a monk weild a defending weapon in his off hand but attack only with his head, knees, feet, etc.?

Unless I just re-read the class description too quickly (and I do that, so take this with a grain of salt)---the only thing that talks about what the off-hand should or should not do relates to the Precise Strike ability.

Note: cannot attack with a weapon in the other hand (it doesn't even specify "off-hand") or use a shield. So you can't wear a shield, and you can't attack in the same round with a weapon in the hand you're not using to make a precise strike.

So
1) Yes, you can wear your gauntlet, as long as you don't hit someone with it when activating precise strike.
2) If you want to actually be CHEESY, use a dagger or short sword in your off hand (light, piercing) and go TWF style, using either weapon you have to use the duelist's various abilities--just remembering you can't attack with both weapons if you want to make a precise strike (precise strike becomes good for when you can't make a full attack).

Now, if you're building up to a duelist from the free-hand fighter archetype, you might have more problems. But personally, were I building from fighter, I'd go for mobile fighter anyway.

IIRC a lot of duelist wording was changed from 3.5 to make it less restrictive, so I'm pretty sure you're not expected to have a free hand at all times.

But its legit for the monk?

(Sorry my edit was probably after you started your response)

Yeah, looks like it should work.

Something to keep in mind, though: there was some discussion in the past as to whether just carrying a Defending weapon around would raise your AC. I think it was decided that you had to actually intend to attack with it (i.e., "use" it) in order to claim the AC bonus.

But I could be thinking of something else, so I suggest you do some digging on your own.

Yes. Table: Weapons

Yes. He can't attack with the gauntlet as part of a Flurry of Blows, but he can still have one.

FAQ - Defending Weapon Property: Do I have to make attack rolls with the weapon to gain its AC bonus?

Yes. Merely holding a defending weapon is not sufficient. Unless otherwise specified, you have to use a magic item in the manner it is designed (use a weapon to make attacks, wear a shield on your arm so you can defend with it, and so on) to gain its benefits.
Therefore, if you don't make an attack roll with a defending weapon on your turn, you don't gain its defensive benefit.
Likewise, while you can give a shield the defending property (after you've given it a +1 enhancement bonus to attacks, of course), you wouldn't get the AC bonus from the defending property unless you used the shield to make a shield bash that round--unless you're using the shield as a weapon (to make a shield bash), the defending weapon property has no effect.
