Dragonchess rules?

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Yes, I know they're in issue #100 of Dragon. Yes, I have a copy. Yes, I know this probably isn't the correct forum to post this. However, I would like to know if there's any chance of a reprint of the rules before AP2? The reason is that I would like to have an updated rule set, and possibly a real set, since you have mentioned a dragonchess parlor being in the starting city of Diamond Mine, and I think it would make a great hook to bait my players with. It would be great to have something to roleplay around.

It's unlikely that we will be publishing the rules for Dragonchess in the magazines. If you're interested in the rules, this site seems to have the best information: http://www.chessvariants.org/3d.dir/dragonchess.html.

Another possible source for the rules of Dragonchess is the Dragon Magazine Archive cd-rom published a few years ago. I see copies for sale once in a blue moon on ebay.

I don't see why an updated rule set would be necessary... I mean, the rules for chess have been pretty much set for a long time.

As for a real set, I'd advise making your own - when I was a kid I managed with little squares of Balsa wood stamped with rubber stamps, but I'm sure you can come up with something more elegant.

I made a set and went all out with wooden spindles for pillars between the boards and the old metal miniatures for the pieces... ah I loved that set... I plan to have a better one made soon.

I have the rules as well, but I would love to see them reprinted with a reasonably priced set. (thinking Christmas presents for my cousins) ;)

My question is why do you need Profession (Gambler) to play Dragonchess? By the rules, you cannot use the Profession skill untrained, thus only someone who actually takes ranks in Profession (Gambler) can play it. What alternative would you suggest for players who do not have ranks in Profession (Gambler)?

You could rule like other "common knowledge" situations. An untrained person playing dragonchess can only achieve a DC 10. They could beat others with no training or those with only some training, but a Grand Master (skill bonus +10 or more) would always wipe the floor with them.
