I have a ranger on a horse. The rest of my party is on foot.
Can I forage at half my mounted speed, avoid getting lost and predict the weather all at the same time?
If I also track, do I then move at 1/4 my mounted speed, if I'm also doing all of the above?
Also, if I'm tracking, do I have to be at the front of the party?
Cheers
Richard

Warning: all of this is my opinion, not RAW. RAW says nothing about being mounted or having other party members trample all over your tracks.
I have a ranger on a horse. The rest of my party is on foot.Peasants...
Can I forage at half my mounted speed, avoid getting lost and predict the weather all at the same time?Weather? Sure, all that takes is looking up. Avoid getting lost? That's looking sideways, so you're okay. Forage? Well... I suppose so, since you do take the speed penalty. You might miss some things on the ground, but being mounted you can range further. That should even things out.
If I also track, do I then move at 1/4 my mounted speed, if I'm also doing all of the above?
Yes, but...
Tracks tend to be on the ground, so you have to dismount a lot. And moving at such a slow pace might mean your quarry will escape. But that wasn't the question. I'd say add +2 to the DC for being further from the ground, and call it a day. Also, if I'm tracking, do I have to be at the front of the party?
Not if you're willing to take a (or another) penalty to the DC.

Fair enough - thanks for the opinions.
I think we've also agreed within the group that if you're foraging and you get a random wilderness encounter then you'll be close enough together when it happens for the whole party to act as one.
Otherwise, quite frankly, foraging is pretty much suicidal.
