For everyone expecting this in April, directly from WotC's website and Facebook page:
A quick update for those as excited as me (or more excited) about the 1E core book reprint and premium treatment. The process behind re-mastering the original materials unfortunately pushed back the release date a bit. But have no fear - I do have a date for you. We're looking to get out the 1st Edition Premium Players Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide on July 17th, 2012.
"re-mastering the original"??
Yeah, as in redoing the typesetting and getting everything ready for printing. They apparently do not have the original masters, or whatever they would have been called in the late 70's, so they have to redo all of that so the books can be printed again.

In STM publishing, the standard method of reprinting a text for which there is no digital copy is to have the book re-key'd using some sort of redundant data entry process, then push the newly created file (usually rtf) through a modern typesetting workflow.
This process is usually less error prone then trying to scrape text out of pdfs (ocr or otherwise), is relatively inexpensive and offered by many off-shore (India/China) typsetting houses. However, it's also prone to slip delivery dates, especially for large amounts of text.
A lot of folks often wonder why a pubisher just doesn't scan the existing copy, distill some PDFs and be done with it. There are several reasons, but the most key is that while the PDF looks ok on your laser printer, the quality of the print won't be acceptible on a commcercial press, even a smaller POD press.
