Can somneone please tell me how idiot proof these are? (I'm asking for a friend, obviously).
Can I just load these in Acrobat, hit 'print' and get a whole bunch of A4 maps with 1 inch squares?
yes they are idiot proof, you just choose the A4 adobe PDF and select the pages for black and white or full color version.
I printed Arena of Fire in exactly that manner, when I used it to Playtest Coliseum Morpheuon. And if anyone has problem we will be here to help.

Thanks - I grabbed both of the bundles. Now I just need to stock up on ink.. :)
Just make sure you use the correct pdf - Letter if you're in the US, A4 elsewhere, and set the page scaling to 100% in the print window. That should run it off at exactly 1 inch squares.
